In 2017, Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay wrote a hoax gender studies paper named 'The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct.' This paper was published in the pay-to-publish journal Cogent Social Sciences which, at least according to the paper's authors, demonstrated that the field of gender studies wasn't rigorous and shouldn't be taken seriously.
The fact that they could pay a shabby academic journal to publish their paper says less about gender studies than it does about the state of academic publishing. Their paper is, nonetheless, a very funny piece of satire, capturing the word-vomit style of many social sciences papers. We read through the paper and offer a (mostly on-topic) running commentary.
