In Duitsland is een rel uitgebroken over een opiniestuk waarin Elon Musk het extreemrechtse Alternative für Deutschland promoot in de krant Die Welt. Musks stuk werd vergezeld van een hoofdredactioneel schrijven waarin afstand werd genomen van de inhoud. De eindredacteur van de opiniepagina nam ontslag. Het stuk zou geschreven zijn op instigatie van Mathias Döpfner, ceo en deels eigenaar van mediagroep Axel Spinger SE dat Die Welt uitgeeft.
