De Europese Commissie en Europese Centrale Bank (ECB) hebben ingestemd om Bulgarije toe te laten treden tot de eurozone vanaf 1 januari 2026. Ze kwamen tot die conclusie op basis van een rapport waarin wordt geëvalueerd of een EU-lidstaat klaar is voor de euro. Daarmee is Bulgarije op weg om de eigen munt, de lev, te vervangen. Het land voldoet immers aan de toelatingscriteria en kan nu mogelijk volgende maand al goedkeuring krijgen. Sofia zou dan per 1 januari 2026 overgaan op de euro. 'Het is een arm land, het economisch gewicht van Bulgarije is laag', aldus BNR's huiseconoom Han de Jong.
