Why Bank Vault Demolition Blows Budgets (And What to Do Instead!)
In this episode of the Blueprints to Punch List Podcast, Dave Grosz of Wilson & Company General Contractors explains why removing old bank vaults often wrecks budgets and schedules, turning simple remodels into long, expensive demolition projects. He breaks vaults into two main types—modular and cast-in-place—both difficult to remove, and notes teams often don’t know what they’re dealing with until demolition begins. Vaults are designed to resist demo, with thick concrete and heavy steel tied into slabs, walls, ceilings, and sometimes roof structure, and drawings rarely show how they were actually built. He stresses the need to properly budget and field-verify conditions in writing, and suggests a proactive alternative: incorporate the vault into the design as storage, a break room, conference room, equipment space, or even a themed “whiskey vault” to save time, money, and stress.
