Liverpool look to maintain blistering start by adding to Brighton’s away day woes

With Liverpool unbeaten at Anfield in the Premier League since April 2017 and Brighton & Hove Albion having not picked up three points on their travels in nine months, surely the outcome of Saturday’s tea-time kick-off is a formality? That is the question we put to our two guests – plus many more – on our Preview Podcast. Our own James Pearce gives us the inside track from the Reds camp including why there is a real belief among Jurgen Klopp and his players that they are now better equipped to challenge defending champions Manchester City. Our Liverpool correspondent also talks man-of-the-moment Sadio Mane and his contract situation as well as one of Klopp’s greatest achievements since taking over the club – namely turning Anfield into a ground that no team wants to visit. The podcast’s other guest, Brian Owen from The Argus newspaper, admits to feeling a sense of trepidation ahead of the game in spite of the fact that Brighton impressed in beating a shambolic Manchester United at the Amex last time out.Seagulls boss Chris Hughton has so far kept faith with the vast majority of the players who helped keep the club up last season but, with injuries beginning to bite, some new faces should be on show on Saturday, including the Spanish star who once turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool.Brian also talks about the time the Seagulls tried to buy Virgil van Dijk, whose primary job on Saturday will be keeping quiet Glenn Murray, whose brilliant backstory is explained. And the podcast rounds off with audio from Klopp’s and Hughton’s press conferences.Enjoy the show – and stay tuned for our post-game podcast featuring views from the stands, the press box and the dugout. Expert casts his eye over Liverpool's finances in wake of run to Champions League final

News broke today (August 24, 2018) that Liverpool have been the subject of a failed £2bn bid to buy the club, which would have been the most expensive takeover in the history of football. Our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce subsequently reported that the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, have no intention of selling up, however they would be open to selling a minority stake in return for the right investment. That in turn led our Liverpool FC reporter Ian Doyle to speaking to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, a lecturer in the subject at the University of Liverpool. You can read both Ian’s and James’s articles on the Liverpool ECHO website. But earlier in the year, in the week after the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, we sat down with Kieran for a special podcast. He discussed the strength of Liverpool’s finances following the run to Kiev, assessed FSG, and explained why the Reds need to run to stand still in the Premier League due to the financial strength of the Manchester clubs. The podcast was published exclusively on the LFC ECHO app on May 31, 2018, but you can now listen to it here, too. It remains an insightful listen. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Poetry in Motion: Single most important signing Klopp has made and why we are now seeing a different Liverpool

Neil Fitzmaurice is back from sunny Prestatyn for his latest Poetry in Motion podcast and, joined by Paul Wheelock and regular sidekick Joe Rimmer, the trio assess Liverpool’s flying start to the season.Virgil van Dijk was the star of the show at Selhurst Park on Monday night and Fitzy admits he is fast running out of superlatives – and expletives – for the centre-back. Paul likes van Dijk’s ‘arrogance’ while Joe goes further in his admiration of a player he sees as already being in the Sami Hyypia class.Talk then turns Naby Keita, another Reds player catching the eye, only for Fitzy’s mum to unexpectedly cut the conversation short. With phones now on silent, the focus switches to Roy Hodgson and a choice analogy and great story involving Billions star – and big Liverpool fan – Damian Lewis and a special night with Sir Kenny Dalglish. The lads then lavish praise on the ‘machine’ that is James Milner and argue why there should be no concern over summer signing Fabinho.Manchester City once again look the team to beat this season but does their new documentary underline Pep Guardiola’s fear of the Redmen? Fitzy certainly believes so.And another must-listen podcast ends with predictions for the Brighton match. We’re not giving the game away when we say there is every confidence the Seagulls will be on the end of a hiding.Enjoy. Liverpool's midfield surprise, problem for Lovren, and why van Dijk has changed everything

It’s been an ominously impressive start to the season for Liverpool – and to reflect on the wins over West Ham and Crystal Palace, and the big talking points from them, our View from the Kop podcast is back.Reds fans Paul Philbin and Neil Macdonald join host Paul Wheelock in the ECHO studio and they believe Jurgen Klopp’s squad strengthening is already beginning to pay dividends.Paul Philbin reckons that was proved by Jordan Henderson’s excellent performance off the bench on Monday night but the question is will the Liverpool captain get his place back in the team given the performances produced by the player who could be the surprise package of the season so far.One midfielder who has quickly become a nailed-on starter for the Reds is Naby Keita and both our guests struggle to contain their excitement over the summer signing. But Neil believes there is plenty more to come from Keita and from Klopp’s side in general – and that leads him to state his belief that the battle for Premier League title is already a two-horse race. Paul Philbin disagrees, but both supporters are on the same page when it comes to Virgil van Dijk, the January signing who has ‘changed everything’.Praise is also lavished on van Dijk’s new centre-back partner Joe Gomez whose displays could pose a problem for Dejan Lovren.Alisson Becker’s start to life between the Liverpool posts is discussed in detail before talk turns to the upcoming games v Brighton and Leicester and why maximum points is imperative in the ‘who-blinks-first’ showdown with Manchester City. And the podcast rounds off with a discussion about next week’s Champions League draw.Enjoy. Post-Game: Looking back on Liverpool’s professional 2-0 win at Crystal Palace

Six points in the bag, six goals scored, and none conceded – Liverpool could not have made much more of an impressive start to the Premier League season. And in our latest Post-Game podcast we look back on the victory that ensured Jurgen Klopp’s exciting side made it two wins from two.The 2-0 triumph over Crystal Palace also hauled the Reds up to second in the early standings and went some way to banishing the memory of their last Monday night visit to Palace. But whereas that painful evening back in May 2014 was characterised by terrible defending, the same could not be said of this latest trip to Palace.Little wonder, then, that the likes of new goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all come in for praise in the podcast, which kicks off with the views of Reds supporters who phoned-in to deliver their verdicts. Then you’ll hear from our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce before the pod rounds off with audio highlights from Jurgen Klopp’s press conference.Enjoy – and if you are a Reds fan who would like to contribute to future Post-Game podcasts, then email [email protected] for further details. The inside track on Liverpool’s trip to Crystal Palace for the first Monday Night Football of the season

It’s been a long weekend without football for Liverpool supporters. But after seeing Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham continue their perfect starts, the Reds will also attempt to make it two wins from two at Crystal Palace in the first Monday Night Football of the season. And we’ve got a full preview of the Selhurst Park clash in our latest podcast. The pod kicks off with the lowdown on Jurgen Klopp’s side from our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce.James explains why Palace’s home should not be considered a ‘bogey ground’ for the Reds – even if it will always bring back bad memories – and why the match will be the first proper test of Alisson Becker and Naby Keita.James also discusses a possible midfield conundrum as well as a reunion with Mamadou Sakho, Christian Benteke, Martin Kelly and, of course, Roy Hodgson.James isn’t Hodgson’s biggest fan but the podcast’s second guest, Matt Woosnam, cannot speak highly enough of the former Liverpool boss.Matt is a Palace supporter and covers the club for the South London Press, as well as running the @PalaceYouth Twitter account, and he also talks Wilfried Zaha’s new deal, the young right-back hoping to follow in Trent Alexander Arnold’s footsteps, as well as one-time reported Liverpool target Max Meyer. And a packed podcast ends with audio highlights from Klopp’s and Hodgson’s pre-match press conferences.Enjoy. Allez Les Rouges: Debating the defence, Roberto Firmino and what will be key to Liverpool winning the title

Peter Hooton is back with his excellent Allez Les Rouges podcast – and he’s invited a special guest along for the latest instalment.Alongside regulars Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Ste Monaghan is Accrington Stanley manager – and big Red – John Coleman. The lads were impressed with the way Liverpool started the season as West Ham United were put to the sword at Anfield – in particular debutant Naby Keita and the attacking options that were able to come off the bench. That said they were less heartened with the cover at the back and, while they believe Alisson could go on to become one of the club’s best ever goalkeepers, they do question whether Jurgen Klopp should have brought in another defender before the transfer window closed, and what his best centre-back partnership is.Reds boss Klopp is certainly not short of quality in midfield after the summer arrivals of Keita and Fabinho but James Milner proved on Sunday why he remains such a vital performer – and Coleman gives a fascinating insight into what the former England man is like up close.Coleman – who performed miracles to get Stanley promoted to League One last season – then offers his ‘controversial’ opinion on Roberto Firmino before talks turn to whether Klopp must deliver in what is his third full season in charge at Anfield. They key to winning the title is then discussed – including factors both on and off the field – before another must-listen podcast rounds off with the news surrounding Mo Salah this week.Enjoy. What next for starlets who impressed in pre-season and why Liverpool is the club to go to for young players

It’s a big weekend for Liverpool FC’s academy with their U18s and U23s sides playing their first home matches of what is set to be another exciting season at Kirby.Neil Critchley’s U23s welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Friday (7pm) before the U18s, now managed by the highly regarded Barry Lewtas after Steven Gerrard’s departure to Rangers, take on rivals Manchester United at the academy on Saturday (11am).We preview both matches – and talk much more besides – in our first Academy Show podcast of the new campaign. Our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce guests on the show after spending the afternoon in the company of Critchley and Lewtas. The rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold to integral first-team squad member was the highlight of a brilliant season for the academy last time out.And there is real hope that there are more players ready to follow in Trent’s footsteps. The likes of Curtis Jones, Rafa Camacho and Nat Phillips certainly staked a claim with their performances in pre-season and James explains what could happen next for the trio and why goalkeeper Kamil Grabara has a real opportunity on his hands.James also discusses the futures of Sheyi Ojo and Pedro Chirivella before talk turns to the U18s and their summer signing Bobby Duncan, the highly rated young English forward who is the cousin of Reds legend Gerrard. That in turn leads to a debate about why Liverpool is now seen as the club to go to for talented young players before James rounds off the podcast by talking about the returning Pep Lijnders.Enjoy. Keita comparisons, Fekir ‘saga’, and why Jose Mourinho and Manchester City have a problem with Liverpool

Liverpool and football are back – and so are our Weekend Verdict podcasts. And our first guest of the new season is the Merseyside Football Reporter for The Telegraph, Chris Bascombe.Chris was at Anfield on Sunday to watch the Reds make an early statement of intent by sweeping aside West Ham United 4-0.The impressive victory served only to heighten the expectation surrounding Jurgen Klopp’s side. But Chris argues the pressure is largely external and, if Liverpool are unable to overhaul Manchester City in the coming months, very little will change at Anfield – and with good reason.Naby Keita was one of the stars of the win over West Ham and we discuss whether the comparisons with N’golo Kante and Andres Iniesta stand up to scrutiny – and whether Nabil Fekir will be ‘missed’ after all. Oh, and why the Fekir ‘saga’ was never a saga in the first place.Squad depth, Daniel Sturridge and the goalkeeping department all get a mention with Chris believing a way to rebuild Loris Karius’ confidence could come down a traditional route.Talk then turns to transfers and the window, which then leads to a discussion about why Jose Mourinho has a bee in his bonnet about Klopp and Liverpool, and why Manchester United’s rivals Manchester City also have a problem with the team tipped to push them closest in the title race.Chris also makes a bold prediction about how many goals and points the Reds will score and accumulate this season.Enjoy. Why Liverpool are now acting like a big club – and the key to toppling Manchester City

The phoney war is over, the real stuff starts on Sunday, but before then there’s the little matter of transfer deadline day to get through. So to talk the last day of the window, and look back on pre-season and look ahead to the new campaign, Liverpool season-ticket holders Sean Bradbury, Dan Kay and Paul Philbin join host Paul Wheelock for our latest View from the Kop podcast. The Reds have impressed both on and off the pitch during the summer in a manner that Sean, Dan and Paul Philbin believe befits a big club. Indeed, apart from the pursuit of a certain Lyon midfielder, the trio struggle to think of any major dramas since the Champions League final. Dan is a little concerned, though, that a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. However, the mood is overwhelmingly positive, with all three praising the 17-year-old Scouser who has played his way into Klopp’s plans, and the less heralded new signing who Paul reckons could have an impact similar to Yossi Benayoun.Sean, Dan and Paul are relaxed about transfer deadline day and reckon that whatever happens between now and 5pm on Thursday, Liverpool will have done the best business of any of the top six. So will that lead to a first league title since 1990? Dan is very confident and Paul believes, although Sean wonders whether Manchester City will prove just too strong again. That said they all three agree that pre-season has proved the Reds have a key factor in their favour when it comes to toppling Pep Guardiola’s men. The change in FSG and the one position Liverpool still need to strengthen

The signing of Alisson for a world record fee for a goalkeeper dominates the latest episode of the brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast.Host Peter Hooton and his guests, Steph Jones, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson, are all delighted that the Brazilian has been brought in.But, as well as discussing what kind of keeper the Reds are getting, they look at the wider context of Alisson’s arrival, and ask what it says about Jurgen Klopp, FSG’s policy, and the balance of power in the Premier League. Not that they are completely satisfied, though.Yes, as well as being pleased by the arrivals of Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, who they reckon could bring the bit of nark the Reds have been missing, Peter and Co still want Klopp to make at least one more signing in one area in particular. If that happens, though, that may lead to the departure of a player who has returned to pre-season looking as sharp as he has in years. But, the question they ask is, can Klopp trust him?The World Cup also gets a mention – as well as THOSE Dejan Lovren comments. It’s another great listen. Sean Cox tribute, super-sub Firmino and the goalkeeper Liverpool should not sign

It was one of the most symbolic images of Liverpool’s thrilling run to the Champions League final – captain Jordan Henderson and the rest of the squad holding the banner dedicated to Sean Cox after the semi-final second leg in Rome. And in our latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, host Peter Hooton, regular guest Ste Monaghan and debutant Peter Carney tell the story behind the banner, how it got onto the pitch at the Stadio Olimpico, and how it was eventually taken to Sean’s family back in Dublin.Talk then turns to the superb new Hotel Tia with its owner, and another Allez Les Rouges debutant, Jostein Ansnes, whose passion for Liverpool has taken him from Norway to opening a business in the shadow of Anfield. There’s also plenty of debate on what is a wonderful World Cup including that man Henderson again, Dejan Lovren and why Roberto Firmino is becoming the new David Fairclough (for his country). There are also words of praise for Harry Maguire, Raheem Sterling and the goalkeeper from across the park, Jordan Pickford. That leads to a discussion over the future of Liverpool’s own No 1, Loris Karius.
