S5 Ep 52Rehabilitation or Repetition? // Inside Barlinnie: With Former Prison Guard Frank
This episode is about how justice and humanity can intersect, and what happens when you treat people like they can still be more than the worst thing they’ve ever done.I’m viscerally aware of how serious crimes affect victims - I’ve felt that pain myself, but every conversation needs space for nuance. And in this episode, you’ll hear former Barlinnie prison officer Frank and I have a very detailed one.We discuss his expansive work history and his view of life inside Barlinnie, how modern innovations in rule-breaking make it tough to stop drugs getting in, plus the blackmail methods used against guards…We take a look at the social factors behind crime and why so many end up in a cycle of prison, addiction, and reoffending…And we explore why, in some cases, investing in rehabilitation makes more sense than a never-ending, expensive spiral. And as always, there’s loads more.Contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 82When The Modern World Gets Too Much, What’s The Answer? // with Angela Landers
Angela Landers is a teacher of transcendental meditation at the TM Centre in Glasgow, recently displaced following the vape-shop fire on Union Street. In this conversation, we explore what transcendental meditation actually is, what it does to the mind and body, and why more people are turning inwards in a world that feels increasingly loud, constant, and overwhelming. We get into the crossover between science and long-standing spiritual practices, how attention and awareness shape our experience, and whether looking inward offers something that modern life doesn’t.I’m not offering a neat solution, because there isn’t one. I’m just asking the right questions. If life feels like too much at times, and you find yourself constantly looking outward for something to settle that, this might shift your perspective.contact: [email protected] TM Glasgow Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 81Six Marathons in Six Days Across the Sahara // with Derek McEwan
Derek McEwan is preparing to take on the Marathon des Sables, a six-day, 250km ultra-marathon across the Sahara, where runners carry their own supplies and face extreme heat and cold. He’s doing it to raise money for the Catherine McEwan Foundation, set up in memory of his mum, who died aged 37 after living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease for 21 years. The charity supports people dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, and the daily realities of IBD.To understand the challenge, I joined Derek in a 35°C heat chamber session with humidity and reduced oxygen. Even over an hour, the strain on breathing, heart rate, and effort levels was clear, offering a glimpse into both the race conditions and the ongoing reality for those living with IBD.contact: [email protected] McEwan Foundation Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 8090s Boyband Fame, Football TV & A Near-Death Experience // with Ally Begg
Ally Begg’s life has taken some extraordinary turns. From growing up in Aberdeen dreaming of playing for Aberdeen FC, to becoming a member of 90s boyband Bad Boys Inc, his journey then moved into the world of football broadcasting. From Manchester United's MUTV and Celtic TV to becoming the face of football across South East Asia, Ally built a global career in sports media. But a serious near-death experience later forced him to reassess everything. This is a story of reinvention, resilience and perspective – in true Blethered style.contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S5 Ep 79Inside the World of a £500 Million Investment Firm // with Edward Kelly & Stephen Wright
In this episode I’m joined by Stephen Wright and Edward Kelly, partners at KPW Investments, a Glasgow-based firm managing over £500 million in assets on behalf of clients.I’ve always been interested in impressive and inspiring people, and it’s hard not to be impressed by two relatively young professionals who’ve earned the trust and responsibility of managing that level of wealth for individuals, families and businesses. This conversation was also a chance for me to stress-test some of my own beliefs and assumptions about the world of finance. Over the years on the podcast I’ve had many exploratory discussions about debt, personal finance and the financial pressures people face in everyday life, so I was curious to better understand the people working inside the system. What struck me immediately is that Stephen and Edward completely contradict the cliché image people often have of high-end finance. They’re personable, thoughtful and grounded, and clearly care about helping their clients make better long-term decisions with their money. At a time when there’s uncertainty across the board economically, becoming financially literate and learning from experts has never been more important. If you’d like to learn more about their work, you can visit kpwinvestments.co.uk or get in touch with the team at KPW Investments in Glasgow.contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 78"They Told Me I’d Never Walk Again. I Did." // with Tylan Williams
Brought to you by Sports Therapy ScotlandBorn in South Africa and living in Dubai, sports fanatic Tylan left behind a life on the corporate ladder and co-founded Dead Man’s Clique - a brand centred around adrenaline-based activities, combat sports, fitness, tattoos and a thriving social environment. As ‘Head of Danger’ at DMC - he threw himself into the deep end of absolutely everything, and life was going beautifully, until the 22nd of January, 2023, when he was involved in a horrendous motorcycle accident, resulting in very severe paralysis. The last few years have undeniably been incredibly tough for Tylan, but the strong impression I get from him, is that he’s faced them all head on. He’s a really tough, strong looking guy, but there’s real warmth and kindness about him. Maybe most surprisingly, there’s also a wee bit of vulnerability, that he’s happy to show. He’s quite open when he talks about how that day has shaped his life, and even though he’s well within his rights to feel aggrieved and to come across as quite despondent and morose, he’s absolutely anything but. There are a lot of life lessons and his story, and this whole conversation, is quite allegorical. Some of the lessons are really obvious and not particularly enshrouded in any mystique, but it doesn’t make them any less profound. This is a man who was told by surgeons that he had less than zero point zero one chance of ever standing on his own two feet again.Well I watched a video of him walking, just the other day.So that tells me… that we should listen to what the man has to say.Movement Is Privilege Instagramcontact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 77'Life in Barcelona, Starting A Podcast & Where It Took Me' // with Sean McDonald
Michael McEwan is a journalist and broadcaster from Glasgow, with a unique perspective on the world. A former Blethered guest, Michael has cerebral palsy, but has never defined himself by that. After some chats back and forth, Michael expressed that he felt he was categorised in a certain way, and lamented what he felt was a lack of opportunity for him in professional terms.I had the idea to hand over the keys to Blethered, and let him showcase just what he can do. He's funny, intelligent, sharp and a capable interviewer/presenter. So here it is! Blethered, with Michael McEwan. S5 Ep 76'And I Would Walk Three Thousand Miles' // with Craig Ferguson
Craig first gained attention by walking from Hampden to Munich for Scotland’s Euros campaign. He’s now taking on a far bigger challenge, a 3,000-mile walk across the US, raising funds for SAMH ahead of the World Cup.We talk about how the idea came about, his affinity with the Germans, and just what he can expect as he undertakes this mammoth challenge. And, as always, loads more.Sports Therapy ScotlandContact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. Ep 5The Trial & Conviction of Serial Killer Lucy Letby
Published ahead of the Netflix documentary on the Lucy Letby case, available to stream from February 4th. I'm joined by lawyer and registered midwife Jaimie McGready to discuss the trial and conviction of serial killer Lucy Letby.Letby was recently convicted of the murder of six newborn babies, and the attempted murder of seven more, in what was the longest murder trial in British legal history. We reflect on the evidence that led to her conviction and receipt of a full life order, meaning she’ll die behind bars.Jaimie and I also discuss the death penalty, the 'morality' of criminal defence lawyers and where the responsibility lies for hospital management staff's failure to act, after repeated warnings about Letby. And as always, there's plenty more.Contact: [email protected]: https://twitter.com/seanmcdonald01Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seantmcdonald/Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 75"For Years, Everyone Was Laughing, Except Me" // with Comedian Billy Porter
Billy Porter's name is synonymous with Glasgow in the 1980s and 90s, where he was a hugely popular comedian in the pubs, clubs and venues of Glasgow and the west of Scotland.Known for his quick thinking, sharp wit and on-the-edge humour, he was a cult favourite, and since his move to Tenerife in 2008, he’s been a must-see for any Scots travelling to the island on holiday. Billy tells me about growing up in Shettleston in a family not blessed with an abundance of wealth, the same as most in that era…He reflects on the impact of realising he was gay, in a harsh and unkind era, when it came to homosexuality…And he speaks very candidly about his challenges with alcoholism, and the years through which the laughter flowed every night, but rarely from him. You’ll know Billy Porter the comedian, but this conversation is Billy Porter the son, the brother, the husband, the friend, the wee guy from Shettleston and the man he eventually came to be.Bily's Instagram Contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 74"Reject the False Gods of the Far Right" | Class, Anger and Modern Scotland with Roz Foyer
Roz Foyer is the General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress and one of the most influential voices in the Scottish labour movement. With decades of experience representing workers across public and private sectors, she is a leading advocate on fair work, pay, equality, and employment rights. In practical terms, she represents the collective voice of hundreds of thousands of workers, meaning her positions can shape national conversations, legislative priorities, and real-life outcomes.During this never-ending period of economic pressure, wage erosion, industrial unrest, and sociopolitical uncertainty in Scotland, Roz articulates worker concerns in language that resonates both with grassroots members and policymakers, making her a credible power broker rather than a purely symbolic advocate. In real-terms: she’s a key figure in Scottish life, and is fiercely on the side of the interests of the working man and woman. You’ll hear us talking about Roz’s formative years in the working world, and how she ended up at the forefront of the trade union movement…We discuss the economic difficulties faced by people in Scottish communities, and how they’re fuelling things like flags being hung from lampposts, and what those flags really represent…And we get into potentially uncomfortable territory. The Daily Mail recently attacked Roz on the basis that she owns some properties. Is it counterproductive and hypocritical for a trade union leader to own more than one home? Or is it completely disingenuous and propagandist output from the usual suspects, that falls apart at the slightest scrutiny? You can decide that one for yourself, I don’t think it’ll take you long. And as always, there’s so much more in there - and a chat I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 73The Greatest Hip-Hop Hoax of All Time // with Gavin Bain
This is the story of two Scottish rappers who pretended to be American, signed to the biggest record label on earth, made a fortune, toured with Eminem and D12, appeared on MTV, recorded multiple albums, before eventually being rumbled. I’m joined by Gavin Bain - one half of the now defunct rap duo Silibil N' Brains - who originated in the Scottish city of Dundee. After multiple rejections, they decided to pretend to be from California, and to their surprise, enjoyed immediate success. Their unbelievable story is now the subject of a biographical film - California Schemin’ - directed by Hollywood heavyweight James McAvoy. The film is based on Gavin’s autobiography, Straight Outta Scotland, but in typical Blethered style, I want to hear about the detail behind the detail, and the nuances of what drove him to pursue the life that he did, and the experiences that made him who he was. You’ll hear about growing up in South Africa, how lucid dreams become prophetic previews of his life events, moving to Motherwell and then Dundee, and how the characterisation that his musical adventure was anything other than unequivocal creative and commercial success, is truly wide of the mark.Gavin and his coconspirator and close friend Billy Boyd’s story is one of the most jaw dropping, hilariously unfathomable and absurd that I’ve ever heard. Make sure you go and see the film when it’s out in early 2026.Spanish Club at Zique's Hyndlandcontact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S5 Ep 71Ross Greer on Why Improving People’s Lives Must Come Before Climate Policy
Scotland heads into an election while housing, public services and the cost of living pile pressure onto people’s lives. In that climate, the Greens are trying to set out what they stand for – after time in government and time out of it – and explain the role they believe they can play in Scotland’s future.Against the rise of the far right across Europe and growing political frustration at home, clarity is important. I’m here to ask direct questions, listen properly, and give guests the space to explain themselves without distortion. S5 Ep 70What’s Pulling Men & Boys Into the Internet’s Dark Corners – And Into Andrew Tate’s Orbit?
Recorded live at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for Aye Write 2025 book festivalThis episode digs into why so many young men are being drawn into the darker corners of the internet, and what’s actually happening inside those spaces. I sit down with journalist James Bloodworth and author Chris McQueer, whose new books approach the same world from different angles. One through investigation, the other through fiction. We examine how loneliness, identity, class, online culture and modern masculinity collide. There are pressures pushing young men toward isolated digital communities, the narratives they find once they’re there, and the sinister influences filling the gaps left by real-life connection and purpose. It’s a grounded, honest and unflinching look at an issue affecting families, schools and communities across the country – and what it might take to bring these young men back into the world around them.Lost Boys by James BloodworthHermit by Chris McQueerThe Anchor Inverclydecontact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 69Don't Gamble With Your Life // with Gambling Campaigner Colin Brown
Colin Brown is the founder of Gambling LEAP, which stands for Lived Experience, Education, Awareness and Prevention. Colin lived with gambling addiction for over 25 years, eventually finding the strength and resolve to turn things around, but not before a number of intense challenges and setbacks throughout his life. He now hopes to use his experience and relative success in managing his addiction, to serve as a help and signpost for anyone currently going through the same experience. In this episode, Colin explains how addiction crept in and how it manifests itself in every facet of life, work and relationships… We discuss the predatory nature of the gambling industry itself, and how football and entertainment are complicit in its destruction And Colin offers his insight into tackling gambling addiction, both for those suffering with the affliction, and also for those close to gambling addicts. If you’re affected by any of the issues raised in this podcast, there are some helpful links in the episode notes, but more importantly, there are some genuinely helpful points and information throughout the conversation. S5 Ep 68Laughing In The Dark // with Dr Benji Waterhouse: Live in Glasgow
Dr Benji Waterhouse sits at an intersection of acute psychiatry and stand-up comedy. A consultant psychiatrist and comic, his book You Don't Have To Be Mad To Work Here offers a sharp, humane account of what really happens inside our mental-health system – and the toll it takes on those working within it.In this episode, recorded live at the Aye Write 2025 book festival in Glasgow, we explore the thin line between illness and ordinary life, how humour becomes a coping tool, and why some of our most familiar stories about "chemical imbalance" may be causing more harm than good.Contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 66Two Men Talking About Miscarriage (Plus Radio Voices, Tourette’s, and Wind-Ups) // with Heart FM Presenter Jonny Campbell
Radio presenterJonny Campbell looks back on his early days in commercial radio, starting out at West FM and then Clyde 1, before making the jump from Clyde 1 to Capital Scotland. There’s funny chat and some discussion around accents, Tourette’s syndrome, the 90’s radio voice, and men dressing up in dresses for Beyonce tickets. The main reason for this conversation, however, was to discuss both the subject - and Jonny and his wife Kirsten’s experience - of miscarriage. They sadly endured three miscarriages, before the joy of welcoming their gorgeous baby daughter Molly in October of this year. It’s estimated that 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage, but it’s one of the subjects that remains largely untouched when it comes to open conversation. My aim here is to hold out a loving embrace for whoever needs to hear it. Whether you or your partner, or someone else close to you, has experienced miscarriage, the emotion will run deep, and possibly remain deep within.Sometimes the first step to healing is the realisation that you’re not alone, even when it feels like you are. I hope – if you need it – that you get that from this chat between two daft Scottish guys who end up expressing a lot of love, care and emotion.Oh and you’ll also hear about the time I convinced my pal Keni that he was live on Real Radio back in 2007. First published in January 2024, but it’s worth a share for those who may benefit from it.I speak to men's sobriety coach Liam about the relationship that society - especially in Scotland - has with drinking… We reflect on our own personal dynamic with booze and the heavy effects of drinking too much, too frequently...And we get into some uncomfortable territory about the darker overhang and aftermath of binge drinking. What you’re about to listen to is a genuine conversation about alcohol, and how we feel about it. S5 Ep 63Why Are There Flags Hanging From Lampposts? // with Aarti Joshi
The pervasive, mendacious and downright malevolent diatribe directed towards immigrants in the UK – or those wrongly categorised as such – irrespective of their social, economic or citizenship status, is at what feels like an all time high. So who better to hear from than someone who’s experiencing this continuing embarrassment to Britain. Step forward, Aarti Joshi. Aarti is a good friend of mine and was previously a guest on Blethered back in 2021, where we discussed what it’s like to be a Scottish-indian woman in a so-called man’s world. Aarti is a strong-willed, intelligent, Scottish woman who is fiercely proud of her heritage, and so she should be. I knew she’d give me a no-holds barred account of what life has been like lately. The trigger point for this sit-down was the sudden appearance of flags hung from lampposts, all over North Glasgow, where I’m from. This was irrefutably and undeniably an attempt to intimidate those deemed to be nonindigenous from Scotland and the UK in general, and it succeeded in its attempt to instil fear in those it was aimed at.In the face of bullies, and especially in that vein, neutrally is not an option. It’s silent support of the systematic bullying and scapegoating of people who do not deserve it. I’m not standing by and watching it happen without doing something, and neither should you.To claim you’re apolitical, in the face of grotesque unfairness and injustice, is an intrinsically political choice. Don’t sit this one out. Believe it or not, after such a morally indignant monologue from me, this chat is genuinely full of laughs. It’s two pals chatting about the state of the world as we see it, and we’ve pulled up a seat for you, as well.contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We discuss practical steps for spotting the signs, breaking the cycle, and building a healthier, more sustainable way of living. While burnout has a devastating personal impact, it also carries a wider cost for businesses and the economy – draining creativity, productivity, and staff wellbeing. S5 Ep 59Carol Looks Like Ken Dodd // with Comedian Lee Peart
Lee’s star in the world of comedy is rapidly rising and has been for quite a while. If you haven’t seen him on stage, then you’re very likely to have seen one of his many viral videos, online. To quote the man himself: Only Slags Use Plastic Bags.In this episode we talk about Lee’s early days growing up in Grimsby, before going to university in Manchester. He explains his first steps in comedy and how that very quickly turned in to a full time career...We discuss comedy as an art-form – including how it’s almost always meticulous preparation masquerading as complete spontaneity…And we look at his work behind the scenes, warming up crowds on shows like Loose Women, Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother – and how that teaches control, discipline and trust in the moment.Plus: touring with some of the biggest names in the UK, including Judi Love and Jason Manford… his own foray into podcasting, and why giving him any form of power will very quickly corrupt him.Lee performs regularly all around the UK, so be sure to check his social media to find out where he’ll be, you’ll be glad you did.Lee's InstagramHot World Cuisine on Instagramwww.hotworldcuisine.co.uk Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 58Belfast, Bombs & A Better Future // with Paddy 'The Dagger' McDonnell
Paddy’s sold out the SSE Arena in Belfast multiple times, and he’s back again in October to the same level of demand. The SSE’s about the same capacity as the Hydro in Glasgow – so that’s a good gauge of where he’s at.He’s got that acerbic wit and ruthless humour that’s typical of Belfast, and just as common in Glasgow – something we get into in detail.Paddy talks about growing up in the middle of an active civil-war zone, and the blunt, brutal reality of it…You’ll hear his take on how we can keep moving forward sociopolitically on both sides of the Irish Sea – and why he doesn’t want a United Ireland if it means steamrolling the other side of the divide…And he explains how a brutal point in his life became the exact catalyst for getting into comedy – and taking the scene by storm. This was recorded backstage before Paddy’s gig at Grace’s Irish Centre in Glasgow, with Pierce Higgins supporting him, so there’s a bit of background noise – but nothing you can’t handle. Most of the noise is actually the crowd laughing at Pierce’s set – another solid sign of a comedian you should catch when you can — and I was delighted when he sat down for a quick chat as well.Pierce talks about getting into comedy and sharpening his craft – writing, refining, and learning to thrive in dynamic and sometimes hostile environments…He tells me about touring with the legendary Gary Faulds – another top-class comic straight out of Glasgow…And why he explains why he’s staying in the comedy game, no matter where life takes him.Paddy's InstagramPierce's InstagramContact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 57Football’s Dark Side: From Chelsea’s Youth System to Edinburgh’s Stage // Alfie Cain's Story
Alfie’s Edinburgh Fringe Show ‘Dropped’ intimately tells his very personal tale of being picked up by Chelsea Football Club’s prestigious academy, before being unceremoniously discarded after a routine medical uncovered a congenital heart defect. After then moving on to North West London side Barnet, he remarkably found himself in and around the first team at only 15 years old, and at one point playing in midfield with Champions League Winner Edgar Davids. Politics, personal dynamics and luck then begin to play their part, and suddenly the door is closed, and like thousands before and after him, Alfie finds himself on the periphery of a world that had once promised him so much. The show is on at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, and will be live at Easter Road Stadium from the second to the tenth of August - and this conversation is your own personal, intimate preview. We talk about what it was like to train with Frank Lampard, Jose Mourinho and John Terry, and where some of his former teammates are now…, plus a funny and fascinating insight into the enigmatic Davids was like as a manager…Alfie talks about the crisis of identity and feelings of suicidal ideation when the world seemed to be closing in, an experience I’ve had myself, and sadly one that former Manchester City player Jeremy Wisten followed through on in 2020…And you’ll hear about the darker sides of football, predatory coaches being one of them; An intensely uncomfortable truth that Alfie handles with admirable strength and exemplary poise. S5 Ep 56Skinny by Injection: Miracle Cure or Dangerous Shortcut? // with Pharmacist Sehar Shahid
Expert pharmacist Sehar Shahid talks to me about weight-loss injections.Their existence and use generates headlines nationwide, but how many of those are accurate, and how many are misrepresented in the name of generating ad-revenue, via online clicks?Well we’re cutting through the conjecture, the marketing, and the media noise to get to the facts — the good, the bad, and the in-between.These drugs are being hailed as a miracle by some, dismissed as dangerous by others, and quietly used by a rapidly growing number of people across the UK — including those who don’t technically “need” them.So what are they? How do they work? Who are they for? And what are the long-term consequences — physically, psychologically, and socially? This conversation isn’t about judgement or snide condemnation, it’s about understanding what’s happening, why it matters, and what it tells us about modern life, medicine, and body image. I also reflect on my own very personal issues with my own body image, and the discomfort it causes me on a regular basis. And most importantly, we want to make sure that if you are going to use the drug, that you’re equipped with the necessary information to ensure that you do so as safely as possible.Watch on YouTubeSehar's Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/24hrpharmacy.co.uk/Contact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 53The Scars We Can't See: Child Abuse, Burying Trauma & How Therapy Helps // with Psychotherapist Satinder Panesar
Satinder is an integrative psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and author who specialises in working with trauma, particularly in the aftermath of child sexual abuse. In this conversation, we discuss the long and debilitating shadow that kind of abuse can cast into adulthood, and how the damage often goes unseen or unspoken, for decades. We also explore the idea of therapy - when it works, when it doesn’t, and the lessons that can be learned across the board. Satinder’s book, When Therapy Goes Wrong, deals with this in detail - and it opens up space for the sort of honest conversations that are badly needed in her field. We examine how men are less likely to engage in therapy, and the enormous benefits that I’ve personally felt…And we speak about the different forms that healing can take - whether that’s traditional therapy, or informal methods of healing and processing, such as speaking to those we trust, and leaning in to positive, personal rituals such as meditation or exercise, in times of personal challenge. And as always, there's loads more.Contact: [email protected] Survivors TrustBuy The Book Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 50Similar Worlds, Through A Different Lens // with Dr Kevin Guyan
Dr Kevin is a writer and researcher whose work looks at where data meets identity - basically, where hard facts and statistics collide with the more personal, subjective sides of who we are.Sexuality shouldn’t ever need to be a focus, but it 's relevant in the context of our conversation, because our identities shape how we see the world. Kevin and I are the same age, from the same country, working in similar fields - but our life experiences have been vasty different. As we talk, we realise we experience a lot of the same dynamics, feelings, and reactions when it comes to identity - they just happen to be about different aspects of it. This episode is about coming together, listening closely, and exploring how two guys with similar backgrounds experience life in their own ways, and how that relates to the notion of masculinity and how it’s been predefined.Pre-Order Dr Kevin's Book: Rainbow TrapContact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 49Radicalisation, Sextortion & Domestic Violence // Part 2 with John Swinney
In Part 1, I got a good sense of John as a man, his connection to his family and how politics became his vocation. In Part 2, we get into the here and now, and some of the issues that are affecting people in Scotland, particularly young men and the concept of masculinity. We consider the concept of radicalisation and extreme ideologies masquerading as benevolent influences...We examine the disparity between the gravity of domestic and sexual crimes, and the sentences handed out in the Scottish judicial system...And we discuss the rapidly rising crime of ‘sextortion’, something covered in extensive detail on previous episodes of Blethered. An alarming number of cases in Scotland alone have resulted in catastrophic and devastating outcomes, with one being publicly addressed by the First Minister in Parliament last May.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/bz0EWOiBANAContact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 48First Minister John Swinney // Part 1
This is the start of an ongoing mini-series on the topic of masculinity in the modern world, and who better to launch it than the man at the highest position of political influence in our country. This is part 1 of 2, and focuses on John Swinney the man, his formative years and how his family shaped him, and what inspired him to get involved in politics. This whole topic is about being human, and how easy it is to be influenced by what we see and hear in popular culture, and John is no different in that respect. You’ll hear the First Minister tell the story of his uncle, a world war 2 hero killed tragically close to the end of the war…He explains how defeat in the 1992 General Election served as the catalyst for what would go on to become a lifelong commitment to his vocation…And we talk about the importance of civility and respect in politics, and how the public are influenced by what they hear in parliament…Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/eBDDYzYjVdEContact: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 46Less Hashtags, More Action, Please // with Psychologist Dr Aisan Ghaemian
Dr Aisan Ghaemian is a Chartered Psychologist and accredited Cognitive Behavior Therapist, and has a PhD in the field of Health Psychology. This was a fascinating conversation on a variety of topics, and I thoroughly enjoyed having such an expansive conversation with such an expert authority in her field. We discuss the impact of social media - and I don’t mean the mealy-mouthed, surface level bullshit we hear on a regular basis - we REALLY discuss it, and I express some uncomfortable truths about my personal involuntary reactions to it…Dr Aisan and I have a bit of back and forth about the veracity and sincerity of the predominant discussions on the nation’s collective mental-state. Are they performative and without any discernible positive outcome, or should we just be satisfied with hashtags and fluffy social media posts? We’re in an undeniable mental health crisis, that worsens year on year. Is that just a random occurrence that’s exacerbated by Instagram and seeing everyone else having a good time? Or is it a direct consequence of communities being deliberately under-funded, wages NOT rising in relative teams for 18 years, despite prices spiralling out of control to the immense profit of opportunistic and callous companies, little sign of hope for hard-working, honest people and a constantly impending sense of doom? We already know the answer to that one...And I listen intently as Dr Aisan talks to me about therapy and what it does for us.And as always, there’s plenty more. https://www.instagram.com/aysan_ghaemian/Contact: [email protected]: https://twitter.com/seanmcdonald01 Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 45No One Lives Forever, So You Might As Well Live Today // with Singer Róisín McCarney
We recorded this conversation on the banks of Loch Lomond as the sun set in front of us, something I mention about 68 times. But my plan worked, the incredible backdrop cultivated some really profound and life affirming thoughts, as I hoped it would. You’ll hear about Roisin’s self-created journey in music, from making some tracks at home to singing in front of Tom Jones on The Voice…Her life-changing cancer diagnosis, turning her world upside down and forcing her to stand face to face with her own mortality, and that feeling of liberation when she realised that we’re really not here forever…And we discuss our love for the Beatson Cancer Centre and Ardgowan Hospice - places close to both of our hearts.Contact: [email protected]: https://twitter.com/seanmcdonald01 Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 44'Disability Doesn't Define Me' // With Journalist Michael McEwan
Here’s a wee bit of information about Michael. He’s a Scottish journalist and broadcaster who has a long list of notable achievements in his field. He’s written for The Scotsman, the Times, The National and The Barrhead News…He’s featured frequently on BBC Scotland and BBC Radio Scotland, producing a notable documentary for the latter…And he even created a short film back in 2009, that went on to receive critical acclaim and awards nominations. He also has cerebral palsy. You’ll get a good idea about Michael as a man, as a professional, how he sees the world, and how the world sometimes sees him. This isn’t a sob story, it’s absolutely anything but. This is a story of someone who’s had his challenges and has faced up to them, and proved the point that disability is a label that we should all see beyond, and that people deserve to be seen beyond. There’s a very fine line between admiring someone and patronising them, but I’m in complete admiration of Michael’s tenacity, ambition and ability. A self taught self-starter who has carved his own space in a very competitive, and often ruthless, industry.Contact: [email protected]: https://twitter.com/seanmcdonald01 Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 43Should The UK Government Ban All Vapes? with Greig Fowler
There’s an upcoming parliamentary debate about the Tobacco & Vapes bill, which was first introduced in the House of Commons on the 5th of November, 2024. Its purpose is to significantly improve public health by reducing smoking rates and preventing nicotine addiction among young people. Here to discuss that with me is Greig Fowler, a business director of Vape retailer VPZ. He says that vaping is an effective tool to get people away from smoking, with Public Health England saying it’s at least 95% safer than smoking. We look at the proposed law changes and what they hope to achieve…We talk about the dangers of driving an already unregulated, £2.4 billion per year market, into increased black market activity…And you’ll hear the viewpoint of Caitlin Notley, professor of addiction at the University of East Anglia, on whether these measures will see a decrease in the number of smokers in the UK…And from Christopher Snowdon of the Institute for Economic Affairs, on potential ramifications of pushing the market into the hands of nefarious figures.Regulation and restriction of tobacco products are undoubtedly a net positive for society, including but not limited to, the NHS and people’s bank accounts. However, we’re entitled to demand transparency and proper application from our politicians. I hope this conversation goes some way to filling you in on a subject that maybe hasn’t grabbed your attention. It affects us all, whether we realise it or not.Read the Bill, have your say: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/the-tobacco-and-vapes-bill-2024Take part in the survey: https://www.vpz.co.uk/blog Hosted on Acast. His story about being adopted and the story that than ensues from that is something that Hollywood scriptwriters would struggle to replicate.Martin’s a first class man and accomplished and respected at what he does, and you’ll very quickly get a sense of that. Once your interest in him has really piqued, you can hear more of him on Scotcast, a new daily news podcast available on TV and wherever you get your podcasts, so make sure you give that a listen.
