CubsPS+ #105: Spring Training Listener Mailbag
Episode Summary: It’s Episode 105, and I’m calling this the Tony Womack episode—a tribute to a player I got to know personally while he was coaching my son’s high school team. Womack brought incredible energy to the game, and I hope this episode captures some of that as we dive into all things Cubs. The Cubs are off to a hot 9-2 start in spring training, and while wins don’t mean much in March, it’s been exciting to see young players step up. Today, I tackle a listener mailbag, covering everything from bullpen battles, underrated hitters, and the Cubs' roster depth, to whether the front office made the right moves this offseason. Plus, I’m giving away five Cubs PS Plus hats to some lucky listeners! Key Topics Covered: 🔹 Spring Training Takeaways – Who’s Standing Out? Cubs are 9-2 – does it mean anything? Why prospect performance is more important than wins Kevin Alcantara, Gage Workman, Moises Ballesteros – which young bats are ready? Bullpen depth battle – who’s making the cut? 🔹 Listener Mailbag: Answering Your Cubs Questions Bullpen Battles: Who’s Locked In? Ryan Presley, Ryan Brasier, Caleb Thielbar, Porter Hodge – who else makes the cut? Keegan Thompson & Tyson Miller’s struggles – are they out? Ben Brown vs. Nate Pearson for a bullpen spot Yency Almonte’s surprise signing – will he crack the roster? Which Young Players Will We See in 2025? Gage Workman (Rule 5 pick) – does he stick? Kevin Alcantara’s breakout spring – could he force his way onto the roster? Moises Ballesteros keeps hitting – when will he make his MLB debut? Cade Horton, Jordan Wicks, and Brandon Birdsell – when do we see them in the rotation? Are the Cubs Done Making Moves? Could they still add a reliever? (David Robertson, anyone?) Why the Cubs still have $28M of payroll space before the CBT Potential trade deadline targets if they need help Who Gets the Last Bench Spot? Gage Workman vs. Vidal Brujan – who wins the final roster spot? Does Kevin Alcantara make the Opening Day roster? Why Craig Counsell finally has the depth to manage matchups Underrated Player Who Could Break Out My pick: Dansby Swanson Why injuries zapped his power in 2024 How rest and a better bench could unlock a return to form 🔹 Final Thoughts & Season Outlook Cubs’ depth is better than it’s been in years – but is it enough? Why this year’s success will depend on injuries and player development Biggest concerns heading into Opening Day Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

CubsPS+ #104: Grading the Offseason
Episode Summary: I’m back after a short break—work, life, and some oral surgery kept me away for a bit, but I’m finally able to talk clearly again (well, mostly). In this episode, I break down the Cubs’ offseason moves, roster construction, and my grades for each unit heading into 2024. The Cubs made some big changes, from acquiring Kyle Tucker to adding Justin Turner, but did they do enough to contend? I dive into the rotation, bullpen, bench depth, and lineup construction and grade each aspect of the team heading into Opening Day in Japan against the Dodgers. Oh, and PCA is officially wearing #4 now, so let’s hope he makes that number mean something for the Cubs! Key Topics Covered: 🔹 The Justin Turner Signing & Roster Impact Why I liked Turner as a bench upgrade and how he fits the Cubs’ roster Can he be an everyday DH or just a platoon bat? How Matt Shaw’s oblique injury might change his early role The veteran presence Turner brings and why that matters 🔹 Alexander Canario DFA – What Was the Cubs’ Plan? The decision to DFA Canario for “cash considerations” Missed development opportunities – Velázquez, Morel, Canario, Contreras, etc. Why Vidal Brujan is still on the roster while Canario isn’t 🔹 Grading the Cubs' Offseason Moves Rotation: B- Cubs added depth but lacked a high-end ace addition Kyle Hendricks is gone, replaced by Matthew Boyd Colin Rea as a depth arm – necessary, but uninspiring Why I would have loved Corbin Burnes or Walker Buehler Bullpen: B Ryan Presley & Caleb Thielbar additions – solid but not elite Porter Hodge & Tyson Miller look promising Did the Cubs do enough at closer? Keegan Thompson’s role – does he make the roster? Lineup: A- Kyle Tucker is a massive upgrade over Cody Bellinger Seiya Suzuki moving to DH strengthens depth Matt Shaw’s injury & how it affects 3B plans Ian Happ leading off – how does that change the dynamic? Bench: A- Much improved over 2023 – Justin Turner, John Birdie, Carson Kelly, Gage Workman Why Kevin Alcantara could sneak onto the Opening Day roster The impact of Nico Horner’s potential IL stint 🔹 What to Expect for Cubs Opening Day in Japan 31-man roster rule for the Japan trip – how that affects lineup choices Cubs likely to be without Horner & Shaw – who fills in? How Seiya Suzuki, Imanaga, & Yamamoto make this series special 🔹 Final Thoughts & Fan Questions Where do the Cubs sit in the NL Central race? Did Jed Hoyer do enough? My final offseason grade for the Cubs: B Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bleacher Bunch #8: Cubs Baseball is BACK!
E🎙 Host: Mike Waller, Guests: Evan Altman & Sara Sanchez 📅 Date: February 20, 2025 ⚾ Podcast Network: Fans First Sports Network Episode Summary: In this live-hosted episode of Bleacher Bunch, I take the mic for the first time in a live setting—so go easy on me (or don’t, I know you won’t). I’m joined by Evan Altman of Cubs Insider, and later by Sarah Sanchez, to talk all things Cubs Spring Training, Justin Turner’s signing, bullpen depth, and the DFA of Alexander Canario—a move that sparked some heated reactions. With the Cactus League underway, we break down the Cubs’ first spring game, early player impressions, and the impact of rule changes like the ABS challenge system. Key Topics Covered: 🔹 Cubs Spring Training Opener: Who Stood Out? Gage Workman’s impressive debut: Is he the real deal or just a flash? Kevin Alcantara, Moises Ballesteros, and James Triantos – promising performances from young Cubs Cody Poteet makes history – first-ever ABS challenge winner in MLB history How the Cubs’ bullpen pieces looked in game action 🔹 The Justin Turner Signing & Roster Implications Cubs sign Justin Turner (1-year, $6M with a mutual option) How will Turner be used? Platoon bat? DH? Backup first baseman? What Turner brings to the clubhouse: Veteran leadership & grit Could this signing actually benefit the Cubs’ bench depth? 🔹 Alexander Canario DFA Fallout: Why? Jed Hoyer’s handling of young talent: Why does this keep happening? Canario’s strong 2023 debut (45 PA, .286/.333/.524, 2 HR) – why not give him a chance? The Cubs keep Vidal Brujan (career 50 WRC+, 550 PA) over Canario – does that make sense? Are the Cubs bad at selling high on prospects? Cubs’ track record of trading/dumping power-hitting Latinos (Morel, Velázquez, Contreras, now Canario) 🔹 Cubs’ Bench & Bullpen Upgrades – Have They Raised the Floor? Bullpen breakdown: Why this year’s group might be better The importance of depth & flexibility Craig Counsell’s bullpen philosophy – expect early-season instability Does Turner + Workman + Birdie make the Cubs’ bench finally competent? 🔹 Rule Changes & What They Mean for the Cubs ABS challenge system debuts – will it help patient hitters like Seiya Suzuki? Cubs pitchers & the challenge system: Will it affect pitch selection? 🔹 Final Thoughts & Fan Reactions Are the Cubs building a contender, or just filling gaps? Can Jed Hoyer survive this season if the Cubs underperform? The fanbase reacts to Spring Training moves Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 103CubsPS+ #103: A Bench Rising from the Ashes?
Episode Summary: In this episode, I dive into a key aspect of the Cubs' roster—bench depth—and why improving it could make a huge impact in 2025. Last season, the Cubs’ bench was a major weakness, and I break down the numbers on just how bad it was. But with several offseason additions and some intriguing prospects, is the bench finally a strength? I also check in on the latest Alex Bregman rumors and discuss whether the Cubs should pursue a veteran bench bat like Justin Turner or Mark Canha. Key Topics Covered: 🔹 Bregman Watch: The Latest Updates Cubs' reported 4-year offer vs. Bregman’s 6-7 year demands Will Bregman sign soon, or is this another Scott Boras standoff? If the Cubs don’t land Bregman, what’s Plan B at third base? 🔹 Cubs’ Bench in 2024: How Bad Was It? The Cubs’ backup players combined for -1.1 WAR 🤯 Outside of Mike Tauchman (1.1 WAR, 111 WRC+), the bench was a disaster Patrick Wisdom (-2 WAR, 75 WRC+), Miles Mastroboni (-4 WAR, 36 WRC+), Nick Madrigal (-0.7 WAR, 57 WRC+) 🔹 How the Cubs Improved the Bench This Offseason Added Gage Workman (Rule 5 pick) – Cubs see big potential in him Signed Jon Berti – veteran utility guy with speed and versatility Picked up Vidal Brujan – but will he actually make the team? Signed backup catcher Carson Kelly – huge upgrade over last year's backups Outfielder Alexander Canario finally gets his shot 🔹 Projections: Can This Bench Be a Strength? Workman, Berti, and Canario all project better than last year’s options Carson Kelly (backup catcher) projects for 88-96 WRC+ vs. last year’s 58 for backup catchers Cubs might finally have reliable bench bats 🔹 Who Else Could the Cubs Add? Justin Turner: Veteran power bat, projects for 112 WRC+, could be a great pinch hitter Mark Canha: Another veteran option, good OBP, can back up first base Paul DeJong: Less exciting, but a versatile option 🔹 What’s Next? Bregman decision could shake up the roster – if he signs, does Matt Shaw move to the bench? Spring Training battles to watch – Workman, Birdie, and Canario will be fighting for their spots Cubs look deeper, healthier, and better prepared to handle a long season 🎧 Listen & Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts | Stitcher If you enjoy the show, leave a 5-star review! 📲 Follow Me for More Cubs Talk: Twitter/X, TikTok, Instagram, BlueSky, Threads, YouTube: @CubsPSPlus What do you think of the Cubs' bench this year? Ep 102CubsPS+ #102: More Moves & What I Got Wrong in 2024
In this episode of the podcast, I dive into a variety of Cubs-related topics as the offseason winds down. With pitchers and catchers reporting soon—especially early for the Cubs and Dodgers due to their Tokyo series—it's time to assess recent moves, potential signings, and projections for the upcoming season. Key Topics Covered: 🔹 The Larry Bowa Episode Honoring Cubs history: This episode is named for Larry Bowa, who wore #2 for the Cubs from 1982-1985 and played a key role in the 1984 division-winning team. 🔹 Cubs' Recent Trade for Ryan Brasier Cubs acquired veteran reliever Ryan Brasier from the Dodgers. Breakdown of the trade details and what Brasier brings to the bullpen. Discussion on Dodgers’ roster crunch and why Brasier was the odd man out. 🔹 Alex Bregman Rumors: Could He Be a Cub? Cubs reportedly have a four-year offer north of $100 million on the table. How Bregman would fit into the Cubs' infield and potential lineup changes. Addressing concerns: Would signing Bregman block Matt Shaw or require trading Nico Hoerner? Why depth is key and why having multiple strong options is a good problem. 🔹 Cubs Season Projections: What the Experts Say PECOTA projection: Cubs at 90.6 wins – 3rd best in NL, 5th in MLB. FanGraphs projection: Cubs at 84 wins – much more conservative. Betting Lines: Cubs projected between 85.5 – 88.5 wins across sportsbooks. My take: Cubs look like an 87-88 win team right now, but that could change. 🔹 Looking Back: What I Got Right & Wrong from 2024 Predictions Bullpen Management: Thought the Cubs’ bullpen depth was improved—it wasn’t (until late in the year). Bench Roles: Expected better use of depth, but some players never got a real shot. Making Room for the Kids: Cubs gave PCA, Bush, and Shaw a real shot, but could have done more for Canario & Mervis. Nick Madrigal’s Future: Thought he was too good to DFA—turns out, I was wrong. Christopher Morel at 3B: Hoped he’d take over the role, but his struggles led to a trade. 🔹 Final Thoughts & What’s Next Bregman’s situation remains fluid—will the Cubs pull the trigger? Cubs still have offseason moves they could make—maybe an SP addition? Full season preview coming in early March! 🎧 Listen & Subscribe: Bleacher Bunch Podcast feed: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts Subscribe & leave a 5-star review if you enjoy the show! 📲 Follow Me for More Cubs Talk: Twitter/X, TikTok, Threads, BlueSky, Instagram, YouTube: @CubsPSPlus Got questions or hot takes? Ep 101CubsPS+ #101: Brick By Brick
Welcome back to the podcast! In Episode 101, I dive deep into how the Cubs are building their pitching staff, including rotation depth, bullpen construction, and the strategy behind their moves this offseason. Key Topics in This Episode: 🔹 Cubs' Approach to Pitching Depth The Cubs are prioritizing depth and flexibility to avoid last year’s bullpen struggles. How they’re structuring the rotation to maximize innings and limit overuse. Piggybacking and multi-inning relievers: A new approach for 2024? 🔹 Bullpen Overhaul: Who Steps Up? Ryan Pressly likely to start as the closer, but Porter Hodge, Julian Merryweather, and Tyson Miller could all factor into high-leverage spots. Keegan Thompson, Eli Morgan, and Javier Assad provide versatility in middle relief. The Cubs' philosophy: more arms, more options, fewer bullpen meltdowns. 🔹 Rotation Depth: More Reliable Than 2023? Projected starting five: Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon, Matthew Boyd, and Colin Rea. Depth options: Javier Assad, Jordan Wicks, Ben Brown, Luke Little, and Caleb Killian. Cubs might still be in the market for a mid-rotation starter—who's available? 🔹 Trade & Free Agent Targets Cubs have been linked to Dylan Cease and Michael King—what would it take to get them? Are they still considering signing a veteran reliever like David Robertson? Long-term bullpen vision: Can the Cubs build a sustainable bullpen instead of relying on quick fixes? 🔹 Can This Bullpen Hold Up Over 162 Games? Lessons from 2023: The bullpen collapsed early due to overuse and injuries. Why a mix of veterans and young power arms might work better this time. Will the Cubs' depth help avoid last year’s late-season fade? Final Thoughts: The Cubs have more bullpen weapons and pitching depth than they’ve had in years, but is it enough? This year’s success could depend on whether their high-upside arms deliver—or if they still need one more big move. Ep 97CubsPS+ #97: Hot Stove - Sizzling or Simmering?
Welcome to Episode 97! This episode feels a little different—no Cubs player has ever worn #97, but instead of finding a stat or milestone to mark the moment, I’m dedicating this one to Ryne Sandberg, a Cubs legend who shaped my love for the game. I reflect on his legacy, his influence on my childhood, and why we’re all rooting for him as he battles cancer. Ryno, this one’s for you. This week, the MLB Winter Meetings gave us plenty to talk about. Here's what I cover in this episode: Cubs Trade and Free-Agent Rumors: The stove is heating up! I dive into the latest on Seiya Suzuki, Nico Hoerner, and Cody Bellinger, plus why the Cubs might make some surprising moves. The Kyle Tucker Buzz: Could the Cubs pull off a blockbuster trade for Kyle Tucker? I unpack the rumors, what it might take, and why he could be the game-changing bat the Cubs need. Roster Moves and Rule 5 Draft: From the addition of Gage Workman to the Rule 5 Draft picks and Carson Kelly rumors, I share my thoughts on how these moves could shape the 2024 Cubs roster. What’s Next: It’s clear the Cubs aren’t done. From starting pitching to bullpen depth and another big bat (or two), I lay out what the team needs to address before Opening Day. This offseason feels like a turning point for the Cubs, and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. As always, I’d love to hear your take—what do you think about the Kyle Tucker rumors?
