South african sports medicine has advanced rapidly in recent years. In this podcast, president of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) Jon Patricios, and University of Cape Town professor Tim Noakes, share their views on the past, present and future of sports medicine in Africa.

Patricios and Noakes review the influence of the 2011 FIFA World Cup on african sports medicine, and highlight the ‘Football For Health’ program which is underpinned by research published in BJSM in 2010 and 2011.

Professor Noakes also discusses the Central Governor Model of performance and the role of industry in excessively promoting over-drinking in endurance events.

Lastly, a preview of the 2011 SASMA Congress.
