Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has unveiled a radical perspective on AIs role in the workplace. Block recently reduced its workforce by around 4,000, aiming to replace middle managers with AI. Dorsey, along with Sequoia Capitals Roelof Botha, outlined this shift in a recent essay. They propose using AI to manage core management tasks such as information routing, team alignment, and product decisions in large organizations. This transition began in December when Dorsey noticed AI tools like Anthropics Opus and OpenAIs Codex handling large codebases smoothly. The essay suggests two AI models: one for internal data analysis and another for customer behavior tracking. These models feed an intelligence layer that creates financial products from modular components. However, the transition isnt without challenges. About 95% of AI-generated code still requires human adjustments, and AI cant lead in heavily regulated areas like banking or transfers. Despite this, the shift is significant, eliminating middle management layers and questioning traditional company structures. Block now envisions three main roles: individual builders, outcome-focused individuals, and player-coaches. AI will identify gaps and assemble solutions, replacing rigid roadmaps. Dorseys vision suggests a future where intelligence replaces hierarchy, enabling companies to operate more efficiently without managerial bottlenecks.
