Miles College Womens Basketball Team Secures Third Consecutive Conference Championship, Earns NCAA Tournament Bid
The Miles College Golden Bears womens basketball team has clinched their third straight Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, securing a spot in the Division II NCAA Tournament. With a record of 25-5, they face off against Nova Southeastern at 7:30 PM Friday in the South Region first round at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Coach Pete Asmond praises the teams veteran leadership, consisting of five seniors and four strong newcomers, for their preparedness after past postseason stumbles. Guard Samarian Franklin, the teams steady conductor, averages 12.2 points and 5.26 assists per game, setting up her teammates perfectly under pressure.
Miles College President Bobbie Knight, who now has three rings from recent titles, celebrated the teams achievement during Womens History Month. The Miles cheer squad also recently won first place in their division and grand champion honors at nationals in North Carolina, planning to travel with the basketball team starting Friday.
Asmond anticipates a large local fan base in Huntsville, turning the short drive into a significant advantage as the Golden Bears pursue more postseason success.
