Gürcistan’da ilk defa bir cumhurbaşkanı doğrudan halk tarafından değil, Gürcistan Seçim Merkezi Komisyonu tarafından belirlenen bir seçim kurulunda seçildi. Mevcut Gürcistan Cumhurbaşkanı Salome Zurabişvili ise parlamentonun meşruiyetini sorgulayarak görev süresi dolduğunda istifa etmeyeceğini belirtti.
