If obeying the gospel is following and serving the Lord in faith, how is it the "free" gift of eternal life?

We continue discussing the book of Romans, summarizing the first 5 chapters, and moving into chapter 6.

How was the gospel presented pre-cross? Prior to Jesus and the cross, how did you share the good news that one must obey to be saved? One can look at the 4000 years before Jesus and see salvation was still presented the same way. Noah was a preacher of righteousness, 2 Pet.2:5, and the disciples preached the good news; all of them preached the gospel. How do you or could you present the gospel without Jesus and the cross. Disclaimer: we do think you should be using this Jesus and the cross today.
