Termin "greenwashing" został ukuty prawdopodobnie w 1986 r., a dziś zjawisko ekościemy jest obecne w każdym sektorze usług. Na ekologii można bowiem zarobić. Aleksandra Majda, wiceprezeska ESG Impact Network dodaje, że być może niedługo greenwashing zostanie zastąpiony realnymi działaniami.
