Dr. Williams discusses her research on the role 4-H and Home Demonstration Clubs played in the lives of rural African-American women from the 1920's to the 1960's. Introduced to teach farm women domestic skills and food preservation, these clubs also served as social gathering places where leadership and organizational skills were developed. Spanning several generations up to the turbulent 60's, these clubs fostered community, kinship, and empowered African-American women to seek a larger role in in the pursuit of voting and civil rights.
