In South Africa, siblings can be legally required to pay maintenance to one another if they can afford to and if the recipient is in dire need. This is not a new law but a long-standing provision under the
Maintenance Act where siblings may be liable if parents or grandparents cannot afford to provide for basic needs. We get more from legal expert Zunaid Olivier.
