We continue our watch-through with a very typical Clone Wars episode with some fun lightsaber fights and exciting battles, followed by half of an episode which discusses the moral quandary with using Clones, with the other half being a continuation of the less than exciting chase for Grievous. We end up wishing that the focus had been entirely on the Clones, and the question of whether they are allowed to have free-will, but it does lay some interesting groundwork for later seasons of Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. We finally end our five episode "Second Battle of Geonosis" arc with a two-part horror story line, which we find to be one of the most unique stories told in all of Clone Wars. Somehow managing to delightfully toe the line between scary and fun, it leaves both of us wishing we had more horror themes in Star Wars content. We continue on, a week delayed, with the middle part of our 5-part Geonosis arc. Standing strong on their own, Landing at Point Rain channels the best parts of Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan without becoming too adult, and Weapons Factory takes a hard look at the master-padawan relationship between Ahsoka and Anakin, in a way that is strongly reminiscent of some scenes we have seen recently in Ahsoka's own show. A surprisingly decent episode that feels like the first real attempt at fleshing out Anakin and Padme's relationship in the Clone Wars, and also serves as a bridge to the Geonosis arc. We were surprised to learn that this episode was actually referencing a Hitchcock movie, Notorious, from 1946, which helps to explain why the story ends so strongly. We've finally reached the Season 1 finale, and somehow they managed to pull it off, wrapping up the story and doing it with not a single wasted minute! Maybe one of our longest individual episodes yet, "Choice" has a ton to talk about and really sparks a lot of good conversation around the best way to consume the flashbacks in service to the story. We're back with episode 6 which is, in our opinion, one of the best "middle of an arc" episodes we've gotten in a Star Wars show to this point. Well written, with good character development, the only flaw is that it seemingly asks more questions than it gives answers, which we find to be a very risky proposition this late in the season. With these two episodes we experience a bit of tonal whiplash following so close on the heels of the excellent and very dark Identity Crisis, but there's some good stuff to be found. Point of No Return is a solidly decent episode, although at times we wish it had pushed the stakes a little higher, and Juggernaut is a return to typical Bad Batch fare for better or worse, though it has some good humor and excellent animation. It's probably most comparable to Twin Suns in Rebels as a one-off with a strong message and intense story telling. The showrunners seem to have developed the much appreciated ability to take an episode than in past seasons would have been disparaged as "filler" and give it just enough core plot movement to stave off that label. The majority of the focus of this episode is on the interpersonal relationships between members of the Batch, with some interesting parallels to Dune thrown in, and that's the strength of the show that has sometimes been missing from past episodes focused on the core characters. What we initially thought was going to be a forgettable two episode arc turns out to be a very solid adventure, with interesting new characters and a fun pair of morals. We arrive at a stretch of Season 1 where the chronological order and the release order finally line up with one of the strongest three-part arcs of early Clone Wars. The Malevolence arc starts of strong with some surprisingly dark scenes, and manages to keep a high level of quality throughout parts two and three, making us wish that this instead of the Rotta arc had been chosen for the premier movie event.
