Beekeeping Today Podcast

In today's episode we talk with Amelia Cadwell who grew up with a grandfather who kept bees, which lead to time spent working for a commercial beekeeper and today, keeps bees herself. She also works with Suterra, a global pest management company headquartered in Bend, Oregon. Suterra specializes in providing a pesticide-free approach protecting crops including citrus, nut, vine and vegetable using a technique called 'mating disruption'. Amelia works primarily with Almond and citrus growers in California. Mating disruption is a management technique that disrupts the mating patterns of pests, effectively reducing their population without the need for harmful chemicals. By releasing synthetic pheromones or using other innovative methods, this approach confuses male pests, making it challenging for them to find females for reproduction. The result? There is less exposure of honey bees and other pollinators to synthetic pesticides, including neonicotinoids. Many states are requiring a broad IPM plan to reduce the use of hard chemicals. Mating disruption can help reduce grower use to one, or zero spray of the hard insecticides, thereby reducing environmental harm to their use. There are many people and companies working to find alternatives to hard chemical pesticide sprays. The naturally occurring compounds used in mating disruption help growers maintain a 'certified organic' labeling, and protect all pollinators in the process. On today's episode, we welcome Dr Brandon Hopkins of Washington State University back to the podcast to talk about his recent research on the benefits of indoor banking of honey bee queens in temperature-controlled storage facilities. Traditionally, queens are banked in small nucs in yards throughout the summer. Queen banking refers to the practice of preserving and storing surplus queen bees for use later in the season. This process allows queen breeders (both backyard and commercial) to maintain a constant supply of healthy and productive queens. By drawing on banked queens, beekeepers can address a range of challenges that may arise, such as replacing aging or underperforming queens, preventing the spread of diseases, or even expanding their operations as the season progresses. Join us as we discuss the benefits of storing banked queens indoors as opposed to outdoors where they can be exposed to all the environmental variables, including extremes in heat, cold, and even smoke! In today's episode, we talk with Dr. Robyn Underwood of Penn State's Lopez-Uribe Lab. We've invited Robyn as she has researched and written about the Spotted Lantern Fly and how its presence can impact honey production. Have you ever tasted your honey and thought was a bit off, or perhaps… way off? Maybe even awful? If you are along the East Coast of the United States and now even parts of the Midwest… check to see if you have the Spotted Lantern Fly in your State and locale. If you do live in an area with the SLF… then what you may be tasting… what your bees may be collecting, is the 'honey' created from the sweet 'honeydew' excrement from the this imported leafhopper from China. (Yes, the bees can collect enough of the honeydew to produce frames of SLF 'honey'…) It is a fascinating discussion of yet another invasive species you need to be aware of. Even if you do not live in one of the 13 states currently dealing with this leafhopper, you should know about it. The SLF is spreading fast, preferring the sweet sap of over 70 different plant species, especially grape plants, maple, and the Tree of Heaven. To add insult to injury, the excremented honeydew, attracts not only honey bees, but other insects including wasps, plus, it builds up and promotes the growth of a dark sooty mold can will cover everything. Amy Vu is the State Extension Entomologist for the State of Florida. She works out of the University Of Florida's Honey Bee Research Lab, headed by Dr. Jamie Ellis. As part of the Research Lab she is involved in the many project ongoing there, including The Bee College, The Master Beekeeper programs and Bee Learning courses. She also works closely with the migratory beekeepers who spend winters in Florida, bringing with them about a million colonies each fall. This, certainly is one of the reasons Florida is always in the top ten honey producing states in the US. Another part of her activities is working with Dr. Ellis on the Podcast they produce, Two Bees And A Pod. Another activity is working with the honey sources Florida provides, some of which, unfortunately, are not indigenous, but invasive. Chinese Tallow trees are a good example, and her work with this problem, develping programs that manage the problem plants while, keeping it in check so it doesn't run amuck and still is useful to beekeepers. Anyone who's watch the front entrance of a hive or watched honey bee gathering nectar and pollen from flowers on a tree or a field of flowers has wondered about the life of a bee. That ultimately leads to the wonderment of just what does a bee perceive of its environment and how does a bee use that information. In today's episode, we talk with Dr. Anthony Nearman on his recently published research on honey bee longivity in the lab. In fact, his research indicates that caged bees in the lab are only living half as long as bees from 50 years ago. Early in his research, he noted that bees used in research in the 1970's were living much longer than the bees in today's research. Anthony started to look deeper into the research of the standards used in the lab for the feeding and water provisioning of honey bees. There were many accepted practices, but nothing backed by research. Anthony started to look closer at the water provided to bees - tap, distilled, sucrose, etc. and its effect on bee longevity. The results, may be sur Along with the research on the water fed to bees, Anthony is investigating whether or not it is possible to determine a bee's age based upon physical characteristics, and how this changes based upon different hive and evironmental changes. John Miller, a commercial beekeeper with Miller Honey Company in North Dakota, just finished his almond pollination season. In this episode, John returns to talk about the weather before and during his time in the orchards, the water issues almond growers are facing, the almond market and what might be in store in the future for this important part of the business. He also shares a bit about the condition of his colonies after wintering in an environmentally controlled building and what worked, and what didn't. He also looks at the looming threat of the entry into the US of the Tropilaelaps mite because them may be headed into Canada. Compared to Tropilaelaps, varroa mites are a walk in the park and John is knocking on a lot of doors to make sure everything possible is being done to keep them out of the US. And then he shares what you can do to help that cause. Today, we talk with Julia Mahood, a Master Beekeeper in Georgia. Julia is fascinated with drone honey bees and especially Drone Congregation Areas. To find out more about DCA's, she is on a quest to find as many as she can across her Georgia community. She started by reading all she could find, then went looking using an artificial queen lure on the end of a very tall stick. That didn't work. She switched to weather balloons and that much better, so eventually she started using mechanical drones, with cameras and lots of range. Some of what she's found so far hasn't been reported before she started this quest. She's finding them now and has created an online map so others can contribute – as a citizen science effort to locate as many as possible. But there's more. She also works with the Georgia Department of Corrections teaching beekeeping in one of their women's prisons. When you think of Arizona, beekeeping typically does not come to mind. On today's episode, we talk about beekeeping in Arizona with three Arizona beekeepers: Duane Combs, Joc Rawls, and Monica King. Duane has been on the podcast in the past talking about the Hive Heart line of bee hive sensors and as part of our Regional Beekeeper series. Monica is a third generation beekeeper and does cut-outs and queens, south of Tucson, and Joc is a retired veternarian, who, like Duane, keeps his colonies near Phoenix. Close your eyes and think of a gold course. We're pretty sure that when you think of the landscape and maintenance of a typical golf course, with lots trim flat greens, schedules of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals - a beeyard just doesn't fit, right? Jennifer Berry and Scott Griffith of the University of Georgia, are working to change that vision. They've placed a hive at the very first tee on the university's golf course, in Athens, Georgia. Jennifer, a grad student at the University and a researcher at the UGA Bee Lab, and Scott, Director of Agronomy and golf course Supervisor, are working to set a standard to use the tracts of land around golf courses, bee and pollinator friendly. They are starting to make it happen. Scott is spreading the word to every golf course in the US about how to keep both golfers and honey bees safe, what they should be planting to help bees stay healthy, and what they shouldn't be doing with all of the chemicals golf courses use. The next step is working with an organization that could certify a golf course as being recognized as Bee Friendly, with guidelines, and standards that if followed, minimized, or better, kept bees truly safe, and well fed. Today we talk with Nina Bagley. Nina lives in Columbus, Ohio, and has a profound interest in the role women have played in beekeeping in this country. She is a county bee inspector, runs about 50 colonies in and around Columbus, and is an officer in the Ohio State Beekeepers Association. Plus she's a University of Montana Master Beekeeper, so all in all, she has a grounding in the science and art of keeping bees. She started her quest after running across a mention of some of these women in a book on the history of beekeeping, and now has a whole library of beekeeping history books plus the entire collection of both Gleanings In Bee Culture and the American Bee Journal as references. The women she talks about today, and she writes about every month in Bee Culture magazine, were industrious, ambitious and hard-working, though some ran their business with a tiny bit of larceny. Returning today is Dan Conlon, vice president of the Russian Bee Breeders Association. Dan updates us on how the Russian bee breeding program, the status of the association and how the Covid shutdowns impacted the USDA Baton Rouge Bee Lab, which first introduced the Russians, and now provides breeding oversight to the group. The basics of the Russian bees is that the good traits tend to be getting better and those traits not favored by beekeepers, are being reduced. Russian bees build quickly in the spring as soon as the pollen starts. This is favorable for beekeepers using their bees for pollination services, but results in swarming issues, if the beekeeper does not keep on top of it. Resistance to varroa is good and is getting better as breed is improved, especially compared to many available bee strains. One trait often mentioned is the defensiveness, but this is more with hybrid Russian bees, but true Russians are even more docile now than even a few years ago. We hope you enjoy the episode. Density, Diversity and Duration. These are the three Project Apis m. objectives when selecting the best Seeds For Bees plantings. Today, Rory Crowley and Stetcyn Malonado join us to talk about the importance of planting ground cover in the fall so bees arriving to the almond orchards in the spring have an immediate food source. The program's goal is to provide seeds for bees to growers of almonds in California that will be in bloom when bees begin arriving for almond pollination as early as December and January each bloom season. Finding the right plants and then finding growers who can take advantage of this program is the job of Rory, the PAm Seeds for Bees Organizer. Density determines the amount of seed needed to adequately cover the amount of space between the rows of almond trees in an orchard. Duration looks at when they begin blooming and when they quit, and diversity is the goal such that there are many different species of plants in that planting so that duration and diversity work together to provide enough good food for the bees until almond bloom starts. Stetcyn is working with the same objectives but working only with Blue Diamond growers, who have different goals and time tables to adhere to, but the process is the same. Have blooms before the bees get to California, be blooming until almond bloom and never have hungry bees again. We hope you enjoy the episode. Joining us today is beekeeper and author, Andrew Bax. Andrew lives in the UK and has been keeping bees for decades. Like many of us 'older beekeepers', he has sought out better means of managing his colonies. Andrew switched from a UK standard hive of stacked boxes to a long hive so he didn't have to lift supers. A standard is the UK size for a large hive, very similar to a deep box hive in the US. Andrew then decided he could improve on the long hive and began designing. Keeping the long hive approach, he set the length to hold 18 'standard sized' frames. To this he added several interesting differences to the hive, including insulation, an entrance not on the bottom, a floor you can clean without moving all those boxes and more. He also modified his management approach and honey handling equipment. We explore this hive Andrew noting the what and why he did things, and we talked about his book about the design, "Beekeeping Simplified with the Drayton Hive." A vaccine for American Foulbrood? Really? Yes, really! We sit down with Dr. Keith Delaplane at the University of Georgia as he explains why his honey bee research lab is involved in this project, how this vaccine works, when it will be ready, and what it will mean to beekeepers around the world. The Dalan Animal Health Company, a private research firm, has figured out a way to deliver a queen honey bee the American Foulbrood bacterial extract, with the result that every egg she lays after that turns into an adult honey bee immune to this very nasty, expensive disease. That was the first step. What Dalan needed was a good honey bee research team to take this information and find out how to get it to work in an everyday apiary. Dr. Delaplane's lab was just the place. A great reputation for a wide range of research projects with skilled scientists, lots and lots of colonies to work with, and the University's Veterinary school right on campus. Today, I welcome Danny Weaver to the show. Danny comes from a long line of queen breeders and beekeepers in the Navasota, Texas area. Danny's father, Binford, was instrumental working with Congress to establish the National Honey Board in 1987. The Weaver name is long established and trusted in beekeeping. Today, Danny talks with me about his current queen breeding operation producing varroa resistant bees, as well as the Bee Weaver Farm in Navasota. The Farm offers a bee experience to non-beekeepers through tours and screened-enclosed demonstrations. The Farm also includes a market, a meadery and a campground. There were 49 other contestants - from the high tech startups searching for their second round of million dollar funding to small Etsy startups… looking to catch the eye of the producers to take their product nationwide. Dr. Jeff Pettis returns to Beekeeping Today Podcast with an update of this past September's Apimondia Congress, in Turkey. Jeff was selected President of Apimondia when they last met in Canada three years ago. His goal was to hit the road running by planning a spectacular event in Russia for 2021. Between Covid and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, lots of things got in the way of that plan and the 2021 meeting was moved to Istanbul, Turkey in 2022. The location was chosen because Istanbul was a familiar location for the group, and travel to there from almost anywhere was one of the least troublesome due to covid issues and other legal restrictions. Dr. Pettis, a former USDA Research Leader at the Beltsville Bee Lab brings not only over 20 years of experience in honey bee research, but also a unique perspective of what beekeepers need, and want to get from an international meeting such as Apimondia. One of the largest and perhaps oldest honey shows in the world in the UK's National Honey Show. The first show opened in 1923 at the Crystal Palace, in London. While the National Honey Show took an understandable break during the second world war, it started up afterwards and is an established annual October event ever since. The National Honey Show is a three day show highlighting honey and other hive products. There are over 250 competitive classes or categories with entries from around the world. Certainly enough to captive beekeepers of any field of interest. Besides the competition, the National Honey Show features speakers and a large trade hall full of vendors and products. In today's episode, special Beekeeping Today Podcast UK correspondent Louisa Cartwright talks with National Honey Show attendees regarding their impressions of their experience at the show. Many beekeepers keep their colonies on property owned by others. Most of the time, this presents no problem. But one of the unique challenges during the fall is the addition of hunters to the woods near the fields holding colonies. What happens when these two worlds overlap? Today, we've invited Steven Coy back to the how to provide an update on the Chinese Tallow tree and efforts to eliminate them. Chinese Tallow was brought to the USA in the 1700's as an ornamental. They have very successfully invaded much of the Southeast US, and are moving north and west at a slow but steady rate. USDA-APHIS has declared them invasive and have introduced two insects that feast on Tallow trees to slow, and eventually stop that spread. However, Tallow trees are a valuable source of honey in the spring for US beekeepers, who manage their bees to take advantage of the honey flow to build their colonies to full strength so they can super pollinate a great deal of the crops we eat. No tallow, far, far less pollination. The American Honey Producers and the National Honey Board have combined to produce a survey to measure the full extent and value of these trees to US beekeepers and to those of us who like to eat Tallow Honey. The intent is to reduce, or better, stop the insects from destroying Tallow trees, maintain the spring honey flow and keep food on the tables of all of us. We hope you enjoy the episode. On today's episode, we welcome back the good friend of the podcast, Dr. Samuel Ramsey. Also joining us today is Dr. Jim Tew, sitting in this week for Kim Flottum. Sammy joins Jeff and Jim to talk about his recent move from Maryland to Boulder, Colorado, where he is now the Endowed Professor of Entomology at CU Boulder's BioFrontiers Institute and the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. Sammy also brings us up-to-date on the research on the Tropilaelaps mite in Thailand and how it could impact beekeepers around the world, should it take the path of the Varroa. Speaking of which, Dr. Ramsey introduces the listener to the Euvarroa Mite… think: a varroa with attitude hair. Regarding Varroa, Sammy is researching ways to control them by disrupting the varroa's use of the egg yoke protein, vitellogenin, found in the fat bodies of the honey bee. It is exciting research that may one day lead to control and management options against the Varroa mite. Also, after we stopped recording the episode, Sammy shared with us the challenges he's faced as he worked toward's his PhD in entomology. He was told repeatedly, that there was "something just not quite right" about him to be a doctor of entomology. There were multiple attempts to hold him back and keep him out of the program. Honestly, as two white men, these challenges are unseen by Jeff and Jim. Sammy's experience is hard to hear. It is amazing that these attitudes still exist in such 'learned' and 'intellectually advanced' micro-societies as found in leading universities. What is unbelievable is that they are allowed to exist today. Sammy's personal story of overcoming the challenges and obstacles thrown at him were captured in the National Geographic 2022 Explorers Festival. Winter bees, those bees that emerge during the cold winter months when there is little to no exposure to the world outside, are very different from summer bees, which emerge during the hectic and exposed to everything bees are exposed to in their environment. In today's episode, we talk with Drs. Mohamed Alburaki and Miguel Corona, two USDA-ARS entomologists researching these differences and specifically the effects of the neonaticide imidacloprid on developing bee larvae. The environment for winter bees is almost exclusively limited to what happens inside the hive. They live months longer than summer bees. Summer bees, on the other hand, live very short lives. Summer bees are either nurse bees or foragers, or maybe both, so they are exposed to all the things their environment has to offer. One of those is exposure to pesticides, the most common is imidacloprid. It turns out, summer bees tend to prefer food given to them that has some small amount of this pesticide in it. The speculation is that the taste is what they are used to – all summer long they ate food tainted with this pesticide. Meanwhile, winter bees, who never foraged or fed bees with nectar or pollen exposed to this pesticide, didn't like it at all and would avoid it at all costs. What this means for beekeepers is that managing your bees to avoid pesticides is the best option you can have. If you can't avoid it, be aware of your bee's tendency to favor the pesticide taste, if that is what they were raised on. It's a complicated and toxic world out there. Be aware. Would you believe varroa mites, carbon dioxide and indoor wintering are working together to make keeping bees easier and more profitable? Well, believe it. Today, we talk with Dr. Brandon Hopkins from Washington State University. His research has shown that if colonies are overwintered in an environmental chamber that can control the levels of the gasses the bees are exposed to, that by adjusting the level of carbon dioxide from a normal 0.04% to over 8.5%, mites in those colonies die. Really. And what's more, the bees don't, really! Temperature was set at just about 40 degrees, the chamber was dark, and after 64 days, mite mortality was extremely high. High enough to prove that this could be a mite controlling tool to use in indoor wintering. To show a difference, another chamber was set up with a 0.12% carbon dioxide concentration, and there was a significant difference in mite mortality was recorded between the two. High carbon dioxide equally high mortality, low concentration equals low mortality. There is much more research underway. Stay tuned! We hope you enjoy the episode. The Minnesota Honey Producers Association has a whole bunch of good things going for them and in this episode we learn about their new Honey Ambassador Program (notice we didn't say Honey Queen Program), plus the state wide habitat program. First off, we talk with Becky Masterman, who've we had as a guest on the podcast in the past. Rebecca is with the University of Minnesota Bee lab and is part of the Bee Squad which has been very involved in both of these programs, working to get people together to work together to work better at producing habitat. We also talk with Josh Munoz, a Marine veteran and is the first MHPA Honey Bee Ambassador promoting honey and beekeeping in the state. Josh also runs the Minnesota Veterans Bee Program. He teaches agriculture in a St. Paul high school focusing a lot on habitat and honey bees and is working to shape high school ag curriculum. Also on today's episode, we talk with Dan Whitney, past Minnesota Honey Producers President and a commercial honey producer, who spends a good amount of time in Texas running over 2000 colonies, and produces nucs and queens each spring. Dan was instrumental in getting the Ambassador program going and in very active in the new Minnesota Habitat Program. All told, 3 very active people getting a lot of good work done to better Minnesota for bees, beekeepers and beekeeping. Listen today! In this week's episode, we visit with Cliff Struhl about his thoughts on better ways to keep bees than is generally done today (and the past 170 years). Cliff is owner of Bee Smart Designs and has produced several products that aim to reduce some of the stresses we apply when keeping bees in a standard wooden box. He starts with the boxes we use and compares them to the hollow trees bees prefer. He looks further at the insulation needs on both the walls and the top, the metal covers that get really hot in the summer, the entrances and the bottom boards. Basically, we keep bees in a very artificial environment, and as a result and the bees are extremely stressed. We have to be active managers so they can thrive. We also discuss the pragmatic approach for queen rearing, mating, purchasing queens, and overall genetics. Is pragmatic beekeeping the same as 'natural beekeeping'? We find out where there may be differences. He sums this all up by stating that beekeeping requires thoughtful input from the beekeeper since the bees are not able to fend for themselves when kept in the artificial environment we normally provide. Dewey is an active member of the Honey Bee Health Coalition where he helps with the creation and maintenance of the Coalition's Hive Management program. Today he joins us to talk about the just updated, Varroa Management Guide. Varroa management is a very serious problem for beekeepers around the world. Sadly, varroa was just found in Australia this year with devastating consequences as hundreds, if not thousands of colonies, have been destroyed in an attempt to eradicate the mite before it establishes a foothold on the last, varroa-free continent. The HBHC has published several useful tools for beekeepers to help them manage varroa to a level where the negative effects of varroa, such as the varroa associated viruses and diseases can be limited. Mark Winston joins us on today's episode. Mark just retired from Simon Frazer University in British Columbia. For many years his research focused on honey bees, beekeeping and agriculture. For about a decade he was a regular contributor to Bee Culture magazine, where he explored the biology of honey bees, and the sociality of beekeepers. His writings include the books The Biology of The Honey Bee, Killer Bees, Nature Wars (his observations on agricultural pesticides), From Where I Sit: Essays on Bees, Beekeeping and Science, Travels in Genetically Modified Crops (his perspectives on genetically modified plants) and his two thoughtful observations of the relations of bees and man in Bee Time, Lessons From The Hive, and his last bee book, Listening To The Bees (how bees, people and society and people are alike). He took that level of thought from bees and applied it to people where he began working in his university's new Center For Dialogue. There he achieved wide recognition as a distinguished educator, consultant and communicator. Dr. Tracy Farone, joins us in this episode. Tracy is a veterinarian, a professor of biology at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, a board member of the Honey Bee Veterinary Consortium, a beekeeper and a regular contributor to Bee Culture magazine. Veterinarians, you will hear her say, were brought into the beekeeping world because of the diseases bees face and the potential for antimicrobial resistance. It's been a change the industry has had to face. It was not all that long ago, products such as Terramycin™ (oxcytetracycline) was found on farm store shelves and beekeepers were directed to use it in the treatment of American Foulbrood. It was also occasionally suggested to use it as a dusting on the top bars of brood frames to prophylactically prevent AFB. With the rise of antibiotic resistant varieties of diseases, the unprescribed use these medications has been stopped and now available for use on animals and livestock only under the prescription of a veterinarian. "I understand why beekeepers want to do what they've always been doing, but they're facing more and more bee health problems. It would be good to get veterinarians on board." she said. "We can contribute here. We can provide so much more than a prescription or VFD to the industry. If we can blend veterinary medical expertise within the beekeeping industry, it's not just an arranged marriage, but a marriage where we can help each other." Today's episode we introduce two new researchers. Project Apis m and CostCo established the PAm-Costco Scholarship Awards, in 2013. The students who receive this PhD Scholarship award bring new energy, ideas, and expertise to the scientists on the leading edge of bee health research. The award program supports outstanding graduate students pursuing research-based doctoral degrees in fields of enhancing honey bee health while improving crop production. Today's guests are two of the 2022 winners. In fact, they are Co-Awardees, Audrey Parish and Chris Robinson. Audrey is a PhD candidate in Irene Newton's lab at Indiana University. In this archive special episode from November, 2020, Master Beekeeper, Katharina Davitt reveals the nutritional benefits honey bees derive from bananas. Yes, you read that correctly, bananas! We all know that bananas are good for people. They are full of carbs, minerals, vitamins, are good for digestion and just taste good. But the one thing all beekeepers learn when they start out is that when bees are threatened, they release alarm pheromone and that smells like bananas. So up to now, wise beekeepers didn't bring bananas to the bee yard. But it turns out feeding bananas to honey bees is actually a good way to get good food into a hive. Really. Katharina Davitt tell us why and how. Her University of Montana Master Beekeeper research project explored the nutritional requirements of honey bees and the properties of bananas. Katharina shares data behind this! The conclusions reached from this study found that colonies cannot live on bananas alone, but bananas will help in the spring, during a summer dearth and in the fall. This week we talk with EAS Master Beekeeper, Deborah Klughers. Deb lives out on the eastern end of Long Island where she keeps her own bees and manages colonies for other people in the area. Deb is leading the EAS Conference track on Apitherapy, August first through the fifth. Apitherapy is the use of hive products to improve a one's health. Everything from propolis, honey, pollen, royal jelly and well… everything including as you will hear, drone and worker larvae! However, what probably gets the most press, is the use of bee venom commonly called, "Sting Therapy". It's a bit controversial, but quietly common. On this episode, we learn share everything you ever wanted to know about Small Hive Beetles, with Drs. Morgan Roth and Aaron Gross, from Virginia Tech. Small hive beetles cause about $3 million dollars damage to US beehives every year. Today we explore their life cycle, how they find your hives, the damage they can do if you don't interfere, how they spread, and most importantly, what you can do to slow, or stop them from destroying your hive and killing your bees. They eat honey, pollen, eggs and larvae. And they bring with them a fungus that turns their fecal waste into a slime that may be the worst thing imaginable in a bee hive. There are several ways to attack this creature and stop them from spreading to other hives. You can trap them inside your hives, you can make the area around your hives dangerous for them to burrow in when they leave and pupate outside the hive or you can provide pesticides or bacteria outside the hive that will stop them. Also in today's episode, Ed Colby returns with a story from his book, "A Beekeeper's Life: Tales of a Beekeeper", titled Staying Cool.
