Learn how to save tens of thousands of dollars by buying cars less frequently. Next to purchasing a home, your biggest expense is usually buying a car. My tip is to own your cars longer. If you buy a brand new $40,000 car every 5 years, in 5 years you've lost 60% of the value in depreciation, not including the interest you're paying on a loan. That's a guaranteed loss of $24k. If instead you could keep the car for ten years, and invest the money you would have spent ($40,000) buying a new car every 5 years, over 30 years you would have only bought 3 cars instead of 6. You saved $120k which could be used to invest in the stock market. Assuming an average return of 10%, you could invest $40k for 25, 15 and 5 years each because you didn't use the money to buy a car in those years. How much could that become in 30 years? Take a wild guess. It could grow to $664,897! Here's the takeaway: buy new cars as infrequently as possible. Best to buy them a few years old in great condition with low miles. Learn my top 10 money strategies to advance your income and net worth in 2019. In summary, here are my 10 Financial Moves for 2019: 1. Review your asset allocation -Rebalance, diversify, adjust as you age, don't use target date funds 2. Contribute more to your 401k and 403b, and IRA's -Contribution limits increased $500 this year. 3. Reduce high interest rate debt (hopefully you are already debt free), but if not pay off your highest interest rate debt first and then your highest utilized amount of debt (debt to total credit ratio). -I do not recommend paying off mortgage debt because it is only 3% or 4% debt and the opportunity cost of what you could earn with that money is much higher. 4. Dollar cost average into the stock market. 5. Don't get too overweight in real estate because it is very late in the cycle. 6. Think over large purchases that can cost you tens of thousands of dollars, like new cars, other vehicles/boats, electronics, high ticket designer shoes/handbags, and moving homes too often. 7. Update wills and beneficiaries on retirement plans and insurance policies, especially if you've had a major life event like marriage, divorce, new baby, illness, or death. 8. Consider starting a side hustle for extra income. 9. Look into new cycles such as Cannabis stocks, artificial intelligence (AI), Infrastructure, Defense stocks, the younger (FANG stock replacement) tech companies. Learn how to save tens of thousands of dollars by not moving very often. Let me tell you a true story. When my late husband and I got married, we had to decide whether to keep his house and remodel extensively (get rid of the avocado colored bathroom, fluorescent lighting and vinyl floors, basically taking it down to the studs), or find a new house. We looked at new construction, but we liked his house's floor plan and "bones" better. It was also in a killer location and on a nice lot. We agreed to keep the house and do a six-figure remodel. Part of what made the the decision easy was a back of the envelope calculation. Let me show you. Adding up real estate commissions of about $30k, loan points $4k, moving costs $7k, prepping house for sale $5k, fixing up new home (curtains, towels, bedding, paint, light remodeling) $10k. Those were obvious expenses it would cost us to move to another home. Adding them up, they totaled $56k, which was 56% of our $100k remodel budget! In other words, over half of our remodel would be saved just by not moving! The takeaway for you? Moving costs a lot of money! The less frequently you move, the more money you will have. So buy a home you can live in for at least 10 years, preferably a lot more. You'll pay your mortgage off faster, accumulate more equity, and save thousands of dollars by not moving. Learn why winning the lottery jackpot isn't necessary for you to have financial freedom or be happy.
