Steve is fly-fishing today or something, so he asked me to step in. I’m your guest host today, Coach Bill Flitter - of the Coaching Youth Hoops Podcast and Basketballpracticeplans.com

Today’s Topic is the 5 critical components of a basketball practice plan structure.

As You know, there are so many things we need to cover in practice that it can sometimes be overwhelming.

It doesn’t have to be. There are only 4 stages you are in during a game

So I organize my practice plans to mirror those 4 stages> These 4 stages give focus to players of that segment of my practice. It allows to Practice skills and decisions in the context they will occur in the game.

  1. Transition to Defense
  2. Defense
  3. Transition to Offense
  4. Offense

Under each stage, I include drills that are relevant for that stage. THis helps me focus on the 4 key components and to make sure I cover them in practice.

But you said there were 5 things, coach?

The 5th element is Skill Work. Shooting, scoring moves, ball handling, etc.

My practice plan looks like this.

  • 30 - 45 minutes of Skill Work.
  • Followed by the most important thing to me - Defense
  • 30 minutes of defense & transition to defense
  • That’s the first hour.
  • 10 Minutes on Offense Transition Work
  • 30 Minutes on Offense
  • 15 minutes of scrimmage - usually with constraints: start from a SLOB, or we put 15 seconds on the shot clock.
