Ep 22#22 Off The Shelf Episode 6. Jordan Shelley

Hark Bookshelvers! It is time to sing like a Samoyed and chuckle like a Chihuahua as it's Off The Shelf time again!Back just in time for a drastic weather change in the UK Corrin, Nat & Steve get to catch up with their old buddy and all round 'top dude' Jordan Shelley! Jordan is a Dog trainer and behaviour specialist - Animal welfare campaigner - Presenter, producer and writer as well as all that great stuff we all used to chew the proverbials on the "Barking Mad Show" back in the day so it was lovely to catch up and see what Jordan has been up to in his, always interesting, life.It turns out that amongst other things Jordan has set up a very important petition to Ban the importation of dogs with cropped ears (a worthy cause indeed). In Jordans words: "There appears to be an alarming rise in dogs imported after undergoing the inhumane procedure of having their ears mutilated, fulfilling the desire for a certain ‘look’ & encouraging a procedure outlawed in England since 1899. It’s time to close this 121-year-old legal loophole".This is a very important cause and we would love if all you Bookshelvers in the UK could sign the petition.Link to the Petition to Ban The Importation Of Dogs With Cropped Earshttps://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/333456?fbclid=IwAR2ynjv1l2yOHa5BQPWl9cFakanVn93a5hWXTj7-NzzvRZt4zYl2U9MY4OcLink to Jordan Shelley's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jordanwshelleyLink to Steve & Corrins Goodall Dog Training Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/goodalldogs/Link to Nat's Training & Behaviour Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/Natdogs/Link to Drax's Galactic Adventure Facebook page (Nat's rescued Irish Wolfhound)https://www.facebook.com/Draxthewolfhound/Link to Steve & Sallys Childrens book 'Jack & Billy Puppy Tales'https://www.facebook.com/JackandBillyPuppyTales/Link to Grant Sharkey's Spotify page (Grant's amazing song 'Grow' features each week as our outro tune.https://open.spotify.com/artist/13PaCwwgVR77TbJH6XAVHQ?si=EOQGmWdCRCiXdECNmJvNAQ

Ep 18#18 Jessica Pierce - The Last Walk: Reflections on Our Pets at the end of Their Lives & Run,Spot, Run: The Ethics of Keeping Pets

What's going down Bookshelvers? We hope to find you well in this bizarre time we are all stuck in. What can we say about this episode? Firstly Jessica Pierce is such a wonderful person and we loved the time we spent talking to her about her two amazing books. We genuinely think that "The Last Walk" is a masterpiece and something that everyone, when ready, should read and "Run, Spot, Run" is a real eye opener. Secondly there are some deep and potentially upsetting topics covered. It's not easy talking about the inevitable day our Pets leave us but it is important. We (of course) try to keep it as light hearted as possible but we are sure you understand that some of the anecdotes and topics can cut deeply :) Enough waffle from us.... Please do let us know what you think. Jessica Pierce is a bioethicist and faculty affiliate at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She is the author of eleven books, including The Last Walk: Reflections on Our Pets at the Ends of Their Lives and Run, Spot, Run: The Ethics of Keeping Pets, and has published essays in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian. She is a regular contributor to Psychology Today (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/all-dogs-go-heaven). Her website is http://jessicapierce.net. Ep 13#13 Off The Shelf Ep 3. Helen Motteram

What is going down Bookshelvers? It’s time for another Off The Shelf episode and this week Steve,Nat and Corrin are joined by the amazing Helen Motteram. We have a deep chat about the journey Helen took starting back in 1998 with her dog Sally which was one of her inspirations to want to help people with their dogs. We also talk about Helens Bird rescue called ‘Russells Rescue’ and, of course, Russel himself (if you don’t know what we are on about you will love this). Helen runs Social Paws with her partner Tristan and they are based in Cheltnam.Helen also runs the fantastic Pet Professional Network (which we all happen to be a member of) If you have a pet business it is well worth a look. Helen describes it here in her own words. “PPN is the first business support organisation and membership for pet professionals who do not use any form of aversive methodology (pain or intimidation) to train, walk or care for any pet. From my own personal results working with thousands of pets and rescue dogs, I’ve seen first hand how training without force has given long term results – confident dogs and happy owners. We apply this philosophy to people, too; employing a strict anti-bullying policy to protect our members, which fosters a true sense of belonging in a safe and confidential environment”.All in all a fantastic human who tirelessly works with animals (inc us human animals) to make this world a better place :) Link for the Pet Professional Network Websitehttps://www.petpronetwork.com/Link to Helen & Tristan’s Social Paws Websitehttps://www.socialpawscheltenham.co.uk/about/Link to Russell’s Rescue Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/russellsrescue/Steve & Corrins Goodall Dog Training Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/goodalldogs/Nat's Training & Behaviour facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/Natdogs/Nats Drax page including the first 6 months videos on Drax (as mentioned)https://www.natdogs.com/draxDrax's Galactic Adventure Facebook page.https://www.facebook.com/Draxthewolfhound/Steve & Corrins Penny and the Giant Peach Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/TeachesOfPeachesAndPenny/Steve and Sally's Book 'Jack & Billy: Puppy Tales'https://www.facebook.com/JackandBillyPuppyTales/

Ep 12#12 Melissa McCue McGrath - Considerations For The City Dog

E

Howdy Doody Bookshelvers! It's Episode 12 time. Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA is just amazing. We hit it off like a house on fire and we have all decided to move in together (ok that last part isn't true but we could!) Do your good selves a favour and find her on the interwebs and beyond you will not regret it. Her book "Considerations For The City Dog" opened our eyes to some unique challenges facing dogs living in our urban jungles. Written partly in response to a dog nearly killing a 6'4" man and his German shepherd in her home city. She consulted with veterinarians, rescue volunteers, behavior specialists, certified dog trainers, dog daycare providers, groomers and more to identify why urban dogs are failing, and what we need to do to help these dogs succeed. As a added bonus Steve & Nat try to 'one up' themselves in a wildlife spotting competition and Steve forgets what day it is! I mean come listen it's a no brainer right?!?!Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA BioMelissa McCue-McGrath, CPDT-KA is a certified professional dog trainer in greater Boston with over 10 years and 800 cases under her belt. She grew up in a dog-sledding family in rural Maine and now sits as the co-Training Director of New England Dog Training Club, the oldest AKC obedience club in the country. She advocates for urban canine sports and science-based training techniques to help dogs cope in the "new normal". Additionally, Melissa writes alongside one of her best friends, Dr. Sip Siperstein, for NPR's Car Talk FIDO Blog. She rather infrequently updates her MuttStuff blog and Muttstuff Facebook Page. As a result of this book, Melissa started #HandsOnFirst, a movement that encourages rescue groups and breeders to stop shipping dogs directly to potential dog owners sight-unseen. #HandsOnFirst explains what responsible rescues, shelters, fosters and reputable breeders actually look like, and educates people how to find a dog that will be best suited to their lifestyle and environment. She and her husband have a daughter named Aislyn. They currently live outside of Boston with their 2 cats, a fish and a snail. The McGraths are actively looking for their next family dog.Considerations For The City Dog on Amazonhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01FGN72BU/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_nqt1Eb1TK966HConsiderations For The City Dog Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/citydogbook/Melissa's Blog Muttstuffhttps://muttstuff.blogspot.com/?m=1Steve & Corrins Goodall Dog Training Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/goodalldogs/Nat's Training & Behaviour facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/Natdogs/Nats Drax page including the first 6 months videos on Drax (as mentioned)https://www.natdogs.com/draxDrax's Galactic Adventure Facebook page.https://www.facebook.com/Draxthewolfhound/Steve & Corrins Penny and the Giant Peach Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/TeachesOfPeachesAndPenny/Steve and Sally's Book 'Jack & Billy: Puppy Tales'https://www.facebook.com/JackandBillyPuppyTales/
