Kevin is the former benevolent dictator (CEO) of Gitcoin and a General in the war against Moloch (human coordination failure).</p> <p>The purpose of Gitcoin is to provide a platform for open-source software developers to acquire funding for their projects. Kevin mentions that open-source creates $500B in economic value yearly. In the crypto space, and on the internet at large, open-source development means that something is free to use, fork, or build on. This accessibility has been a driving force behind web development, and Gitcoin's mission is to create a business model for open-source software developers. Gitcoin has raised around $20M since its initial launch in November 2017.</p> <p>Gitcoin DAO is seeking to meme itself into the Quadratic Lands, where public goods are well-funded and digital democracy reigns. As Gitcoin has grown, it has come to the point in which a DAO is more well-served for Gitcoin's goals of activism and open-source development. Anti-fragility and distributing points-of-failure are key benefits of transitioning into a DAO. MEV is arguably the single most important unsolved problem in the crypto space.</p> <p>In the context of incentives and network security, MEV generally refers to the ability of miners & validators to take advantage of their position as securers of the network. Blocks are verified by single entities, and these block producers have tremendous power when they are the ones adding a particular block to the blockchain. We refer to this instance as ‘God-Mode,’ in which a node has the power to assemble & order transactions at will. The threat here is the potential gaps between what is best for the network and what is best for the node.</p> <p>As an internal and unbounded threat to blockchains, solving the problems that MEV presents is critical to maintaining proper consensus and ensuring decentralization and permissionless access. We take a deep dive into potential solutions, and the impact of EIP-1559 and Proof-of-Stake on MEV. The catalyzing example for Vitalik's discussion of legitimacy comes from Bitcoin and Ethereum, who both have the power to mobilize a tremendous amount of capital but are restricted in how this capital is used. Vitalik posits that legitimacy is the deep and powerful social force behind this.</p> <p>Legitimacy is a social phenomenon that describes things that are broadly and generally accepted in a coordination system. Without ascribing moral values, legitimacy can be seen as social reality - the status quo. Legitimate things include the de facto norms and collective expectations of groups, whether you like it or not.</p> <p>According to Vitalik, there are a number of ways to achieve legitimacy: brute force, continuity (inertia), fairness, process, performance, and participation – these are not mutually exclusive. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain ecosystems 'earn' legitimacy by community acceptance and adoption, but the continued legitimacy of these things is dependent on maintaining that which made it legitimate in the first place: promises and proofs of decentralization & security.</p> <p>Vitalik turns this discussion towards funding public goods. Ethereum can't summon capital for public goods without sacrificing the decentralization and soundness that give it legitimacy. However, these expectations are not carried as strongly in the app layer. This gives the ecosystem flexibility to coordinate and provide for the health of the network beyond base layer security & decentralization. If you're haven't already, check out Strauss & Howe's book 'The Fourth Turning' for a sober and salient account of what modern historiography is missing when it comes to interpreting societal ebbs and flows. Historical patterns are difficult to objectively pin down and create uniform laws that apply across the life cycle of a civilization. However, there are key concepts that are sticky and are often found in pivotal moments in history.</p> <p>In this episode with Josh, we explore the sticky concepts of value and information.What does it mean for society when there are massive infrastructural changes to these things? The progress of civilization, on a macro scale, inevitably boils down to how we view, understand, create, and distribute communication and commerce. The European Renaissance, beginning in the 15th Century, is a fascinating example of a society undergoing fundamental changes in its relationship with value and information.</p> <p>Two pieces of technology, the Printing Press and Double-Entry Bookkeeping, laid the foundation for a massive societal revolution that launched Europe into modernity. The late Middle Ages were increasingly hierarchical, in which value & information were held by an oligarchic feudal system. The Printing Press was a communication technology that decentralized access to information, such that Martin Luther was able to use it to spark the Protestant Reformation. Double-Entry Bookkeeping was an ancient practice rediscovered in Italy in around 1300, and this financial technology catapulted the Medici family into a flourishing age of art, culture, and redistribution.</p> <p>The pendulum of history, according to Josh, swings between aggregation and distribution. His first, The Bull Case for Cryptography, went in-depth into cryptographic hashes and digital signatures, the basic tools used to build blockchains. The second, Ultra Sound Money, presented a thematic overview for the Ethereum economic engine. In this episode, we model Ultra Sound Money and what upcoming upgrades to Ethereum mean for issuance, supply, and staking vs. mining.</p> <p>Justin recently released four models cover the granular data-driven details of what Ultra Sound Money Means. These models deal with Ether's three main cashflows: Issuance, Supply, and Collateral. Justin argues that with the massive efficiency improvements to the Ethereum Network with Proof-of-Stake, Ether issuance will decrease by upwards of 90% and will proportionally reduce sell pressure from miners. He posits that ETH's peak supply will be 120M total Ether, and EIP-1559's burning mechanism will eventually reduce the total supply of ETH down to 100M.</p> <p>Justin also expects the APR for staking Ethereum to be 25% following the Ethereum 2 merge. We visualize what these numbers mean by combining the Ethereum Economic Engine metaphor, Triple Point Asset thesis, and viewing capital as having an inherent temperature. Cold ETH means that it is locked up, securing the network and/or reducing total liquid supply. Hotter ETH is that which is actively available for use, but much of this ETH is vaporized through EIP-1559's fee burn mechanism. Therefore, on both ends of the temperature spectrum, supply & issuance are optimized via staking and fee burn.</p> <p>Every episode with Justin is a deep exploration of the technicals that back Ethereum's memes of being a Triple Point Asset and Ultra Sound Money. However, understanding the models Justin lays out is cause for optimism on Ethereum's future as a vastly improved economic system. Governance focuses on the decision making process in regards to capital. Capital is a broad term for economic resources – that which has utility. Governance can refer to autocratic individual decision making, but we dive into governance as a mechanism for collective decisions and achieving consensus. It is typically tied to a social and/or economic system and is made of structures that drive decision making among groups of people.</p> <p>Capital represents influence, power, or control over economic resources. Capital and its utility are natural social phenomena and are relative in nature. Governance and Capital are deeply linked and arguably synonymous. The optimization of governance over capital and capital instruments are priorities of blockchains, which involve both financial and governance technology. The utility of capital can increase when pooled, especially when governance is scaled and effective.</p> <p>A core argument of the crypto industry is that blockchains offer a more advanced instrumentation of capital, creating maximally efficient pathways for the exchange of value. They allow the transaction/contract settlement layer to migrate away from a state-backed system, which involves the use of courts and violence to achieve security. It offers users access to no-loss lotteries; founder Leighton Cusack describes it as a savings account, and the interest generated by the collective deposits are combined into randomly selected lotteries. Like most DeFi project, it is permissionless, trustless, and powered by smart contracts.</p> <p>Unlike legacy lotteries, which require purchasing tickets, access to PoolTogether lotteries only requires depositing funds which can be pulled out in full at any time. There are currently $225 Million in assets deposited in PoolTogether, earning the interest that becomes rewards for the PoolTogether community.</p> <p>PoolTogether also has a reserve, which contributes to an increasing treasury. These sponsorships are deposits that are not eligible to win prizes. Instead, these returns are circled back to the pool to yield further interest. This is a perpetual growth mechanism for increasing the reward sizes over time.</p> <p>PoolTogether recently decentralized with its POOL governance token, and POOL was retroactively airdropped to all users earlier this year. It is also distributed to everyone who deposits in one of the lottery pools. Jeff leads the investment committee, focusing on risk management for cryptoassets. His work history in both legacy and crypto finance puts him in a unique position to work as a bridge between the two worlds.</p> <p>The Coinbase Direct Listing also acts as a bridge between the two worlds, and it's undoubtedly a landmark event for the legitimization of the crypto industry. What does this mean for the Banks, Fintech, and Wall Street? What does it mean for Gemini, Uniswap, and Binance?</p> <p>The first item to discuss to answer these questions is how the media and crypto twitter alike were off in their interpretation of this event. The volatile price action in the first moments of the listing were surprising to many, but Jeff explains that this shouldn't be surprising at all, given that there are no underwriters or built-in stability in a direct listing like $COIN's. In this week's State of the Nation, we bring on guys who have done both: Preston Van Loon and Will Villanueva.</p> <p>Preston Van Loon is a former Google software engineer who switched to crypto full-time after Vitalik put 1000 ETH into Prysmatic Labs, which Preston founded. Prysmatic labs is now the most popular ETH 2 client. Preston is also the co-founder of a brand new DeFi app ‘Cryptex’, which is a collateralized synthetic asset that tracks the total market cap of all crypto-assets.</p> <p>Will Villanueva is a former team member of the Quilt team at Consensys and contributed to a mountain of R&D on Ethereum sharding. Will is now the CEO of Element, which offers high yield fixed income for DeFi assets. Element works by breaking a single token into two different ones; a yield-bearing token, and a principle token.</p> <p>We brought both Will and Preston because their unique work histories of first helping build the Ethereum Protocol and now building DeFi apps. The main goals of the Security & Exchange Commission are threefold – to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation. The SEC governs far more than crypto, but increasing attention is coming to the space as capital gravitates into it.</p> <p>Regulating crypto begins with officially establishing the asset class, e.g. currencies, capital assets, commodities, equities, et al. The next step is giving these assets legitimacy in existing financial institutions through exchange-traded products like a Bitcoin ETF.</p> <p>Below the base money layer, there exists Layer 0, the social layer. Layer 0 must be willing to officially play ball with the cryptoeconomy, and that's what makes regulators like Hester so important. The net optimization of these layers makes for an unequivocally better society: a more inclusive, equitable, and efficient one.</p> <p>Hester believes in governing principles, not specific technologies. It's important here to remember the three main goals of the SEC. The value propositions of crypto – providing a permissionless, trustless, and verifiable means to transact – are in accord with the values of a free state. The role of government is to encourage and protect mutually beneficial, voluntary engagement among citizens.</p> <p>Although the harmony between crypto's core values and those of a free state are readily apparent to a seasoned Bankless listener, the rest of Layer 0 must still be convinced. Crypto is a frontier with infinite possibilities, and effectively regulating such an ecosystem is a massive task. The nature of perpetual contracts allow for flexibility and expression in the financial mechanisms powering the contract, giving traders the ability to use leverage. These types of contracts attract high-level, high-frequency traders and make scalability crucial for a platform to be capital-efficient.</p> <p>StarkEx is StarkWare's scalability app, which uses StarkWare's Cairo, a Turing Complete coding platform, to support Layer 2 Scaling for transfers, trading, derivatives, and NFTs. dYdX rebuilt its interface, backend, and order-book; it then paired with StarkEx to create a scaled, decentralized derivatives exchange. Throughout the development and launch of its new product, dYdX has continued to emphasize the DeFi core values of being non-custodial, trustless, and permissionless.</p> <p>A major upgrade is cross-margining on dYdX, which allows users to provide universal collateral, instead of having to provide collateral for each market. Other improvements include lower gas prices, increased oracle performance, higher maximum leverage, and no minimum trade size. Before inventing DeFi's largest asset exchange, he was laid off from his mechanical engineering job in the summer of 2017. Excited by Ethereum and Vitalik's blog post on automated market making, he learned to code smart contracts using Solidity.</p> <p>Uniswap's V1 Mainnet launch came in the middle of the crypto bear market in November 2018. Since then, it has experienced exponential growth and traction, with liquidity providers like MakerDAO bolstering Uniswap's early ecosystem. Uniswap V2 brought pivotal upgrades to the user experience, bug fixes, and improvements to the Oracle architecture.</p> <p>From its genesis, Uniswap has emphasized the decentralized, permissionless properties of Ethereum. Uniswap's tools enable anyone to create a liquidity pool to exchange on, and it has become the de facto hub of DeFi as a sandbox for the 'long tail' of endless decentralized assets. Uniswap's openness, functionality, and legitimacy have allowed it to rise to its current position as a DeFi staple.</p> <p>On September 16th, 2020, Uniswap launched its UNI token with a widely distributed airdrop to each Ethereum address that had interacted on the Uniswap platform – over 500,000 accounts. This drop exemplifies DeFi's promises of wealth distribution, communal equity, and decentralized governance.</p> <p>On March 23rd, 2021, Uniswap announced V3 to go live on Ethereum mainnet in May of 2021. The most significant change in this upgrade is concentrated liquidity, which allows individual liquidity providers to control where their liquidity is allocated along the price curve for a given asset pair. What do they know about crypto? We bring on David Grider of Fundstrat to answer these important questions for us. If an asset is legitimate, it will inevitably end up on Wall Street, the heart-center of global finance. David embodies the growing bridge from traditional finance to crypto, and he sees the space as increasingly on the radar of high-level investors. Crypto should be understood as making the internet an emerging market.</p> <p>For David, the tipping point came as crypto boasted a trillion-dollar market cap. The finance space is not uniform, and some spheres have been more quick to adapt and adopt than others. As crypto becomes more standardized and accepted, it will be easier to continue this trend in accordance with the Lindy effect – the idea that life expectancy decreases over time with things like technology and concepts.</p> <p>A general willingness to adopt must also be paired with necessary technologies and infrastructure to support custody and investment vehicles, and these things take time. He described these as the fire and wheel of cryptography technology. This time, we dive into the specific economic design of the Ethereum network and how it is positioned to expand upon the 'stone-age' cryptography of Proof of Work.</p> <p>Given Ethereum's expressive capabilities, its future has infinite possibilities in terms of both innovation and development. To explore Ethereum's value proposition as Ultra Sound Money, we use the model of the Ethereum Economic Engine. In this metaphor, the basic energy harnessed is monetary value, stored in the 'engine' battery via tokens. The engine itself is structured by the network's consensus mechanism, Proof of Stake. The engine's efficiency is maximized through the issuance structures proposed in EIP-1559.</p> <p>All of these components (explored in great detail throughout the conversation) contribute to the concept of ETH as 'Ultra Sound Money.' Soundness describes the degree of efficiency and security in the storage and exchange of monetary value. Economic security, anti-fragility, optimized issuance, efficiency, and scarcity combine to create a robust, maximally effective network. This could be the best episode we've ever recorded. The sales totaled $11.7M.</p> <p>3LAU's biggest takeaway from all this is that the music industry is ripe for disruption. NFTs can remove intermediaries and bridge the gap between fans and creators. Transparent, immutable digital goods are increasingly accessible to the public. These tools promote direct-to-consumer transactions, democratization of data, and self-distribution.</p> <p>The argument here is that given the technology of distributed ledgers, record labels are now obsolete. The first is ‘Self-Directed Retail Investors,’ who has bootstrapped crypto from the ground up. The second is ‘Institutional Investors,’ including Venture Capital Firms, Endowments, Foundations, and other large funds. The third – and most neglected – is capital under the ‘Financial Advisor’ umbrella. This is where the 1%-er money is, and this bucket is just now gaining access to the crypto space.</p> <p>The Financial Advisor bucket holds $30-$40 Trillion in assets, and the minds in this space are changing as crypto is increasingly legitimized through improving infrastructure and the strong recovery from the 2017 cycle. Building efficient vehicles to bridge this wealth into crypto is critical for large-scale adoption.</p> <p>This is where Bitwise comes in. Bitwise manages around $1 Billion in assets and created the first Crypto Index Fund, offering a variety of products to retail investors, accredited investors, and financial advisors. Most recently, Bitwise launched its DeFi Crypto Index Fund, exposing financial advisors to the world of DeFi.
