What is money? What is value? What are the characteristics of a good society? In our conversation with Luke Burgis, we dive even deeper: what drives our basic desires and behaviors? Luke makes an incredibly compelling argument that the root of our wants and perceived needs derive from Mimetic Desire -- the idea that we look to others and mimic what they do.</p> <p>Mimetic desire appears to emerge among all successful social species. As humans, we learn how to exist in a society by observing and processing those around us. Our parents, friends, and communities at large all collectively inform how we perceive the world around us. In this model, the individual melts away, and instead, we become interdependent nodes in a network of ideas, ideologies, actions, and behaviors. We often want things because others want them. Although rationality certainly plays a role, it takes a back seat to the more immediate and salient driving forces of mimesis.</p> <p>How does this relate to crypto in particular? Well, mimesis certainly drives the patterns we find in markets: speculation and adoption are both functions of mimetic desires. This model also applies more broadly when we consider the coordinative power of the internet and blockchains. If we accept mimesis on the aggregate and individual scale, we can more fully grasp the scale and scope of these new social and economic technologies.</p> <p>Hot off the release of his book 'Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life,' Luke is fascinated by the potential of blockchains to revolutionize how we interact and function as a species and society. In 2021, Nic has spent much of his time dispelling the common myths frequently pointed at Bitcoin by the mainstream media, and he has been a general in the Green Energy war taking place around Bitcoin.</p> <p>Last week, Nic started a Twitter Space to discuss El Salvador adopting Bitcoin as legal tender, a historic moment for crypto. Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, joined the Space as the El Salvadorian congress ratified the bill. This twitter space ultimately garnered over 20,000 listeners, including some of the biggest names in crypto. Bukele showed himself to be savvy with both tech and social media, earning his label as a populist.</p> <p>This is a pivotal time for cryptocurrency. The news from El Salvador bring up increasingly important questions like the relationship between nation-states and digital value. There are a variety of motives for El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin including lessening dependence on US monetary policy, as the Dollar was previously the sole currency of the country.</p> <p>What does it mean for a country to adopt a cryptocurrency? Is Bitcoin being used for its 'intended purpose?' Is this a populist reprisal? Do these events represent a rejection of the Cantillon effect, and a move against the monetary hierarchy of capital gains taxes? A variety of perspectives will collectively yield that we are at a tipping point, from a macro and micro standpoint. As we witness the emergence of a new technological ecosystem, the stakes and implications are ever increasing. Thus it only makes sense to bring on a panel of some of DeFi's smartest minds to hold a summit on where we are and where we're heading.</p> <p>This panel comprised of Santiago Santos of Parafi Capital, Vance Spencer of Framework Ventures, and Spencer Noon of the Variant Fund. In broad terms, DeFi refers to open, blockchain-based finance. The root of this stack consists of primitive financial services – the money verbs like borrowing, lending, trading, escrow, etc. It involves programming smart contracts to execute logic that transfers value on the blockchain. Within these parameters, there is infinite expressivity and room to explore.</p> <p>The internet of value has set itself up to be a game of optimizing capital efficiency through logic. The winners of this game will be the protocols, apps, individuals, and institutions that minimize counterparty risk while maximizing anti-fragility and resilience. The key here is finding ways to balance the values of consumer agency and protection with the power of capital efficiency. Maximalism and absolutes will be pushed to the margin as the realities of tradeoffs become increasingly apparent.</p> <p>DeFi, despite its youth, has shown itself to be resilient and deeply anti-fragile. Good logic doesn't break. As it matures, the growth and depth of DeFi infrastructure will demonstrably contribute to its Lindy effect. The total addressable market (TAM) of this ecosystem difficult to quantify, as it is a non-zero game that currently encapsulates the entire global economy at present. So we brought on Brian Krogsgard (AKA Ledger Status) to help us understand the price action in the markets from a variety of perspectives. Brian is a host on the Ledger Status and UpOnly podcasts, and co-founder of the FlipMetrics data platform.</p> <p>Brian introduces the concept of investing and trading as a pyramid -- at the bottom of the pyramid lies fundamentals and an overall investing thesis. As one moves up the pyramid, the time frames become increasingly shorter, and at the top are the pure psychological and analytical-based trades. Having sound plans throughout this pyramid is what makes for strong investing. Fundamentals, narratives, and tactics form a holistic approach which dictates how you should execute rotations and denominate wealth.</p> <p>Ledger screens by fundamentals, and enters by technicals, while keeping the tactical side of things as simple as possible to avoid "analysis paralysis." The technical top of the pyramid is influenced by market psychology, and is inherently chaotic and more difficult to grasp. With a broad approach to playing this money game, Brian went down the DeFi rabbit hole throughout the course of 'DeFi Summer' in 2020. The object of this game is a quest to get more ETH. They describe themselves as 'on-chain' maximalists, and we dive into how Ethereum boasts impressive on-chain metrics and its strong, fundamental narrative.</p> <p>Big money likes productive assets, and ETH is proving itself to be highly productive as a capital asset. We discuss the flippening of Ether & Bitcoin, and the opportunity for it in this cycle. Su & Kyle make it clear that institutions are coming around on Ethereum, and the scope of the ecosystem is such that any EVM-compatible (composable with the Ethereum Virtual Machine) is in turn bullish for ETH.</p> <p>Ethereum has painted six weekly green candles in a row and is indisputably red-hot at the time of this recording. Despite the bullish narrative, it remains difficult to properly measure the magnitude of this move. The inevitable unknowns do not frighten Three Arrows Capital, who explore denominating net worth in Ether. The catalyzing example for Vitalik's discussion of legitimacy comes from Bitcoin and Ethereum, who both have the power to mobilize a tremendous amount of capital but are restricted in how this capital is used. Vitalik posits that legitimacy is the deep and powerful social force behind this.</p> <p>Legitimacy is a social phenomenon that describes things that are broadly and generally accepted in a coordination system. Without ascribing moral values, legitimacy can be seen as social reality - the status quo. Legitimate things include the de facto norms and collective expectations of groups, whether you like it or not.</p> <p>According to Vitalik, there are a number of ways to achieve legitimacy: brute force, continuity (inertia), fairness, process, performance, and participation – these are not mutually exclusive. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain ecosystems 'earn' legitimacy by community acceptance and adoption, but the continued legitimacy of these things is dependent on maintaining that which made it legitimate in the first place: promises and proofs of decentralization & security.</p> <p>Vitalik turns this discussion towards funding public goods. Ethereum can't summon capital for public goods without sacrificing the decentralization and soundness that give it legitimacy. However, these expectations are not carried as strongly in the app layer. This gives the ecosystem flexibility to coordinate and provide for the health of the network beyond base layer security & decentralization. Historical patterns are difficult to objectively pin down and create uniform laws that apply across the life cycle of a civilization. However, there are key concepts that are sticky and are often found in pivotal moments in history.</p> <p>In this episode with Josh, we explore the sticky concepts of value and information.What does it mean for society when there are massive infrastructural changes to these things? The progress of civilization, on a macro scale, inevitably boils down to how we view, understand, create, and distribute communication and commerce. The European Renaissance, beginning in the 15th Century, is a fascinating example of a society undergoing fundamental changes in its relationship with value and information.</p> <p>Two pieces of technology, the Printing Press and Double-Entry Bookkeeping, laid the foundation for a massive societal revolution that launched Europe into modernity. The late Middle Ages were increasingly hierarchical, in which value & information were held by an oligarchic feudal system. The Printing Press was a communication technology that decentralized access to information, such that Martin Luther was able to use it to spark the Protestant Reformation. Double-Entry Bookkeeping was an ancient practice rediscovered in Italy in around 1300, and this financial technology catapulted the Medici family into a flourishing age of art, culture, and redistribution.</p> <p>The pendulum of history, according to Josh, swings between aggregation and distribution. Are we experiencing a pendulum swing now? Is the Internet the Printing Press of the information age? Will Blockchain Technology be the revolutionary piece of fintech that Double-Entry Bookkeeping was? His first, The Bull Case for Cryptography, went in-depth into cryptographic hashes and digital signatures, the basic tools used to build blockchains. The second, Ultra Sound Money, presented a thematic overview for the Ethereum economic engine. In this episode, we model Ultra Sound Money and what upcoming upgrades to Ethereum mean for issuance, supply, and staking vs. mining.</p> <p>Justin recently released four models cover the granular data-driven details of what Ultra Sound Money Means. These models deal with Ether's three main cashflows: Issuance, Supply, and Collateral. Justin argues that with the massive efficiency improvements to the Ethereum Network with Proof-of-Stake, Ether issuance will decrease by upwards of 90% and will proportionally reduce sell pressure from miners. He posits that ETH's peak supply will be 120M total Ether, and EIP-1559's burning mechanism will eventually reduce the total supply of ETH down to 100M.</p> <p>Justin also expects the APR for staking Ethereum to be 25% following the Ethereum 2 merge. We visualize what these numbers mean by combining the Ethereum Economic Engine metaphor, Triple Point Asset thesis, and viewing capital as having an inherent temperature. Cold ETH means that it is locked up, securing the network and/or reducing total liquid supply. Hotter ETH is that which is actively available for use, but much of this ETH is vaporized through EIP-1559's fee burn mechanism. Therefore, on both ends of the temperature spectrum, supply & issuance are optimized via staking and fee burn.</p> <p>Every episode with Justin is a deep exploration of the technicals that back Ethereum's memes of being a Triple Point Asset and Ultra Sound Money. However, understanding the models Justin lays out is cause for optimism on Ethereum's future as a vastly improved economic system. He started the firm in 2017 with his friend Chris Burniske and mentor Brad Burnham after three years at Union Square Ventures, developing the firm’s early blockchain thesis and portfolio.</p> <p>In this episode, Joel explores the relationship between Governance and Capital, broadly used terms in desperate need of proper definition. Governance focuses on the decision making process in regards to capital. Capital is a broad term for economic resources – that which has utility. Governance can refer to autocratic individual decision making, but we dive into governance as a mechanism for collective decisions and achieving consensus. It is typically tied to a social and/or economic system and is made of structures that drive decision making among groups of people.</p> <p>Capital represents influence, power, or control over economic resources. Capital and its utility are natural social phenomena and are relative in nature. Governance and Capital are deeply linked and arguably synonymous. The optimization of governance over capital and capital instruments are priorities of blockchains, which involve both financial and governance technology. The utility of capital can increase when pooled, especially when governance is scaled and effective.</p> <p>A core argument of the crypto industry is that blockchains offer a more advanced instrumentation of capital, creating maximally efficient pathways for the exchange of value. They allow the transaction/contract settlement layer to migrate away from a state-backed system, which involves the use of courts and violence to achieve security. It offers users access to no-loss lotteries; founder Leighton Cusack describes it as a savings account, and the interest generated by the collective deposits are combined into randomly selected lotteries. Like most DeFi project, it is permissionless, trustless, and powered by smart contracts.</p> <p>Unlike legacy lotteries, which require purchasing tickets, access to PoolTogether lotteries only requires depositing funds which can be pulled out in full at any time. There are currently $225 Million in assets deposited in PoolTogether, earning the interest that becomes rewards for the PoolTogether community.</p> <p>PoolTogether also has a reserve, which contributes to an increasing treasury. These sponsorships are deposits that are not eligible to win prizes. Instead, these returns are circled back to the pool to yield further interest. This is a perpetual growth mechanism for increasing the reward sizes over time.</p> <p>PoolTogether recently decentralized with its POOL governance token, and POOL was retroactively airdropped to all users earlier this year. It is also distributed to everyone who deposits in one of the lottery pools. Jeff leads the investment committee, focusing on risk management for cryptoassets. His work history in both legacy and crypto finance puts him in a unique position to work as a bridge between the two worlds.</p> <p>The Coinbase Direct Listing also acts as a bridge between the two worlds, and it's undoubtedly a landmark event for the legitimization of the crypto industry. What does this mean for the Banks, Fintech, and Wall Street? What does it mean for Gemini, Uniswap, and Binance?</p> <p>The first item to discuss to answer these questions is how the media and crypto twitter alike were off in their interpretation of this event. The volatile price action in the first moments of the listing were surprising to many, but Jeff explains that this shouldn't be surprising at all, given that there are no underwriters or built-in stability in a direct listing like $COIN's. Modern cryptography doesn't exist in a vacuum, and there is a vast historical landscape to explore and provide context for the underlying principles that power the internet today and drive the innovation of the internet tomorrow.</p> <p>The story of today's cryptocurrency did not begin with Satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper in 2009. It began decades earlier in the 1970s as cryptography was revolutionized by Cypherpunks, who discovered new mechanisms for the secure transfer of information.
