Nugget of the week - Having a crystal clear value proposition with Chris from Chime

About this nugget: This nugget was pulled from episode 169 from an interview with Chris Britt, co founder and CEO of Chime. This nugget is on having a crystal clear value proposition. Subscribe to Bank On It podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify and iHeartRadio and you'll get these nuggets delivered every Wednesday morning. No matter the stage of a company, nailing the value proposition is hard. Whether it's at startup or growth stage it's difficult, the only thing that evolves is the scope of the challenge. Regardless, the challenge for founders falls under about three main points. Does it resonate? Can we deliver a best in class experience? Does it attract customers to drive the right consumer habits? These are very basic points, but nailing the nuances of them is where the real challenge is. Details are often missed and there's a failure to predict future outcomes on one, two or three of these points, since companies early in life are focused on getting a relative-size customer base. This causes strategic holes and issues down the road, every short-term choice has unintended long-term consequences, but that is the cost of building something new. When there's no other choice, changing the value proposition or messaging down the road works well. A simple problem to evolve towards. Simple, but not easy. During our interview back in November 2018, Chris shared a moment when he realized consumers assumed Chime was only a rewards program. Which as we know it's a bank. Yes, they have great rewards, but consumers thought that's all they had. This causes a problem because rewards seekers are not sticky customers and in order to invest in deeper relationships, Chime needed consumers to open payroll deposit accounts. They realized this problem when they asked their customers the question. "Why don't you move your checking account over to us"? The answer they received surprised them. Chris shared in this clip how they responded. What is a nugget of the week?: The host John Siracusa has recorded over 280 episodes as the host of the Bank On It & Before the A fintech podcasts where he interviews founders building the future of fintech and the VCS/Angels who fund them. With each interview there's this wow moment when the person interviewed has shared something really special, unique or a reminder on how founders or investors should think. So, here we are delivering those moments to you in the form of a bite sized nugget. About Chris Britt: He is the co-founder & CEO of Chime. Before Chime, Chris was the Chief Product Officer and SVP, Corporate Development at Green Dot. Prior to that, Chris held roles as a senior product leader at Visa and as one of the first executives at ComScore. About the host: John, is the host of the 'Bank On It' podcast recorded onsite in Wall Street at OpenFin, and 'Before the A' podcast recorded onsite in Flat Iron at Barclays/Techstars Rise NYC. Nugget of the week - Reading the market and taking action with Mark from Illuminate Financial

About this nugget: This nugget was pulled from episode 240 from an interview with Mark Beeston, Founder and managing partners at Illuminate Financial. This nugget is on reading the market and taking action. Subscribe to Bank On It podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify and iHeartRadio and you'll get these nuggets delivered every Wednesday morning. Market conditions often change in little ways, but sometimes there are massive shifts. Reading the market and building a business model that rides the wave of change is very hard to do. To do this, investors look for signals of change and use those signals as a baseline to benchmark. Humans are always looking for patterns, we do this starting as babies. But, when in the cusp of a massive market change signals and patterns can be confusing and misleading. Causing us to have incorrect or short-sighted predictions. As we get older and wiser we start to ask why more often, asking yourself why 5 times to a single question, can lead to the root of the truth. Take a look at a particular market where the current tech stack's obsolete, yet, still functioning. Start with "why is that?" When you get to your third "why" you might ask "why are they still using it?" This is where it starts to get interesting. The post-crisis financial market showed us that the technology supporting it was obsolete. But obsolete technology didn't drive the change we're noticing today. Massive industry de-leveraging, multi-jurisdictional regulations and a transition into a zero tolerance compliance environment did. The nuances in that understanding will influence massive bets. There is a difference between investing in new technology that will replace old, compared to new technology that could be the tech stack of the new market. About Mark Beeston: He founded Illuminate after a 25+ year career in capital markets where he had been both the consumer of capital markets technologies as well as the entrepreneur, operator, and funder of capital markets businesses. Prior to founding Illuminate, Mark was the CEO for the Post Trade Risk and Information business at ICAP (now Nex) where he oversaw the creation of ICAP's own investment subsidiary. Prior to ICAP Mark launched T-Zero (now ICELink) during his time at Creditex before the company was acquired by ICE in 2008. Nugget of the week - Filling the gap from a demoralizing idea to $28 million in funding

About this nugget: This nugget was pulled from episode 250 from an interview with Perry Rahbar, founder & CEO of dv01. This nugget is on how Perry went from a disastrous pitch to $28 million in funding. Subscribe to Bank On It on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify and iHeartRadio and you'll get these nuggets delivered every Wednesday morning. Most of us have experienced the fear that something bad is about to happen soon. Sometimes we're right and it does, but most of the time nothing happens, making all that worry, a total waste of time and energy. To most fears, the financial meltdown during 2008 actually happened. The day Bear Stearns closed its doors, Perry was there. He was getting his career started and then it happened. During the full interview he shared in detail how it all ended, in one day Bear Stearns went from a bustling business to a ghost town. Post the news, he stayed around to assess the exposure. Then, as it relates to the existence of Bear, it was all over. While he was assessing total exposure post-Bear he found something odd. Here are his words: -"So I stayed around and helped my boss at the time try to figure that number out (total exposure), keep in mind like Bear was pro, it was known to be really good with their risk, which is crazy when you think back to it. We had a really difficult time just figuring out what was the total exposure, every system was spitting out different numbers. We had to put everything in a spreadsheet and to me it was just mind boggling that, you know, you're talking about what was eventually over $50 billion in exposure." ----------------Perry Rahbar during his Bank On It podcast interview This was the beginning of what dv01 would become, his worst possible scenario became became the beginning of his biggest opportunity. We live in an exciting time in fintech due in part by the financial meltdown in 2008. That meltdown impacted so many, which became the spark of people in finance to build and fund fintech as we know it today. Perry found this massive problem which he needed funding to build. So he pitched the idea to a handful of top VCs and he blew it. In this clip you'll hear how he went from a disastrous pitch to $28 million in total funding. What is a nugget of the week?: The host John Siracusa has recorded over 280 episodes as the host of the Bank On It & Before the A fintech podcasts where he interviews founders building the future of fintech and the VCS/Angels who fund them. Nugget of the week - Founders who build a lot with a little

About this nugget: This nugget was pulled from episode 183 from an interview with Charles Delingpole, co-founder and CEO of ComplyAdvantage. It's on how founders can make decisions fast and accomplishing a lot with a little resources. Subscribe to Bank On It on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify and iHeartRadio and you'll get these nuggets delivered every Wednesday morning. This nugget is on how founders can accomplish a lot, with a little resources. ComplyAdvantage is Charles's third company, on the surface, each company is very different from each other, but by connecting the dots Charles distilled core aspects to build ComplyAdvantage. Those past companies are The Student Room (social media site) and MarketFinance (peer to peer lending). When building a new startup there are the inevitable uncharted paths where past experiences fail to influence a positive step forward. We live in a world where the competition is so high that the speed and accuracy in decision making can flounder or fuel enterprise progress. Accurate and fast decision making is mostly influenced by past experiences, if a founder lacks particular experience then they need a framework that provides time. ComplyAdvantage provides AML, an area of speciality where there's plenty of time to figure it all out. The key is to have the right skillset, combined with the right framework towards accomplishing a goal, is a powerful formula for making faster and more accurate decisions. Those dots all connected for Charles to create ComplyAdvantage. If you believe in what you're doing, keep doing it, because you're preparing yourself for what you'll be doing in the future even though you may not know what that is yet. Steve Jobs once said in a commencement speech that you can only connect the dots looking back. This important shift in thinking validates all the hard work you're doing. What is a nugget of the week?: The host John Siracusa has recorded over 270 episodes as the host of the Bank On It & Before the A fintech podcasts where he interviews founders building the future of fintech and the VCS/Angels who fund them. With each interview there's this wow moment when the person interviewed has shared something really special, unique or a reminder on how founders or investors should think. So, here we are delivering those moments to you in the form of a bite sized nugget. About Charles Delingpole: Charles is Founder and CEO of ComplyAdvantage, a technology company focused on wiping out financial crime using Machine Learning. As CEO, Charles leads the product development and growth of the company. His passion for the issue came from his time as the MLRO of a previous startup he founded when he realized how inefficient processes around money laundering are. Over 99% of money laundering is successful, ComplyAdvantage is working to stop it completely. Founded in 2014 with offices in London, New York, Singapore, and Cluj, ComplyAdvantage work with over 350 firms across 45 countries. Charles set up his first company, The Student Room Group, now the world's largest student discussion forum when he was 16. After completing his MA in Politics at Trinity College Cambridge, and then an MSc in Management, Strategy, and Finance from the LSE, he became an associate at J.P. Morgan Cazenove. Nugget of the week - The Hard Pivot is Leadership

About this Nugget: This nugget was pulled from episode 227 from my interview with Sankaet Pathak from Synapse. It's on leadership and making the hard decisions. Subscribe to Bank On It on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify and iHeartRadio and you'll get these nuggets delivered every Wednesday morning. In this nugget we have Sankaet Pathak from Synapse, this nugget is on leadership by making the unpopular and difficult strategic decisions. Every day We hear and see plenty of leadership posts on what great leaders do compared to bad ones. In reality the lines between good and bad leaders is not clear. It can get muddy for leaders making important strategic decisions which are unpopular at times and can be mentally and physically draining, yet, sometimes everything is riding on that decision. Sometimes the crazy decisions pay off, while in others they cause or speedup the demise of an organization. Welcome to being a leader, being a great one is not up to you or anyone else for that matter, it's about having a goal and accomplishing that goal. I know I'm oversimplifying it, since leadership isn't a single thing, but if you boil it all down and distill it, being a great leader is within having the ability to make results a reality. As they say, talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. Sankaet has done this twice at Synapse and we share one here in this nugget. What is a nugget of the week?: The host John Siracusa has recorded over 270 episodes as the host of the Bank On It & Before the A fintech podcasts where he interviews founders building the future of fintech and the VCS/Angels who fund them.
