The Deuce - S03E01 - The Camera Loves You
EHBO's The Deuce is back! We rejoin our mixed crew of hustlers on the Eve of 1985. The strip itself seems a bit less bright, and a good deal more dangerous, even as powerful big-money interests have high-class aspirations for the neighborhood. This premiere is a marvel of efficient storytelling and character re-introductions, introducing various threats to the community; wolfpacks, AIDS, home video recording, that will be impacting the lives and livelihoods of The Deuce denizens for the rest of the series. IT Chapter Two (2019)
EWe went to see Chapter Two of Stephen King’s IT, and we were both kind of underwhelmed. We were both fans of the first installment, but unfortunately the great acting and interesting characterizations are undermined by hokey horror sequences and what feels like a lot of recycled material from Chapter One. We think it’s an okay film, not a very effective horror movie, and with the cast and material that’s pretty surprising. We’ll be back in a few weeks to take on Ad Astra (and Cecily and I will be sneaking in a review of the Downton Abbey movie), see you then! Harlots - 307
EHarlots continues it's back-half swoon as things continue to not make much sense, and we're left with too few characters we genuinely care about. Sure, Lady Fitz's impulsive kiss of Nancy was exciting, but there are two many things happening because of happenstance, chance encounters, and nothing really feels like it has consequences. There is one more week for Harlots to right it's ship, but Cecily and I fear we're once again the undertakers of Bald Move. Harlots - 306
EMargaret Wells leaves miles of burning human wreckage in her wake as she leaves the British Isles once more. We're hoping Lucy can right her personal ship with the advice and support of Pa North, but as eleventy million people have remarked this season, her neck seems destined for the noose, and the situation with her investment in the molly house isn't getting any less complex or fraught with peril. Things are looking so grim, Cecily and I are starting to wonder, are they wrapping up Harlots?! Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
EWe went to go see Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw tonight, and it's awesome. You either love the F&F franchise or you don't, and if you love it like we love it this movie is going to satisfy. All the hallmarks are there; insane vehicular action, Loony Tunes meets Three Stooges approaches to violence, suspension of disbelief stretching feats of driving and other forms of derring doo. Maybe it's a tad too long, maybe they lost track of what time of day it was in the third act, but it doesn't matter. We hope they make a dozen more of these things. We'll be back next week to watch the ladies mobbin' through the streets of NYC in The Kitchen! See you then! Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
EWe went and saw "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", the latest movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie. It's not his best film, it's certainly not his "worst", but for us it's extremely watchable throughout it's nearly three hour run-time and when it finally goes off the rails in the last reel, hoo-boy. Brad and Leo are having a lot of fun, the film is as gorgeous as you'd expect, and Hollywood looks as magical as it ever has on screen. We'll be back next week to check out Hobbes and Shaw, see you then! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Harlots - 303
ECecily and A.Ron are back to mourn the loss of a pillar in the Harlots community. What an episode! We were having so much fun, on the edge of our seats, giggling over our muff pistols, eagerly anticipating what a flustercuck the boxing match at Lady Fitz' palace was shaping up to be, and then Harlots crossovered with Game of Thrones, and we're not talking in terms of Theon Greyjoy. It will be interesting to see how the characters will weather the loss, or the show itself for that matter. We have faith in Ms. Newman and Buffini, but we're still reeling from the gut punch they hit us with. Come back next week as no doubt team Wells-North burns down London in some insane revenge plot! The Lion King (2019)
EJim and A.Ron have seen the "live-action" remake of The Lion King, but why? Why was this film made? I mean, we know the rea$on$ The Mouse is jamming this joyless attempt at cinema down our throats, but really, why? A stellar vocal cast can't even come close to making it worth it. It's hard to think of a more pointless endeavor, and it's \all down hill after the cold open. Stay at home, save your money, and put on your best copy of the original on your biggest screen and crank up the sound. Enough with this pretender. Long live the original King! Harlots - Episode 302
EAron and Cecily are back to dish on Hulu's Harlots! Charlotte and Lady Fitz team up to pinch the Pinchers, Lady Quigley and Miss Bottomley are Straight Outta Bedlam, while Elizabeth, Fredo, and Lucy dress to the nines to establish their molly house. Also, Pa North is back, but Mama Wells remains unaccounted for. Perhaps the Pinchers' upcoming real estate deal in America will bring her back into play? Harlots - 301
EA.Ron and Cecily are here to peddle podcasts for Hulu's very lush, very fun, Harlots, back now for it's third tawdry season. We run down all of our favorite characters and their positions and predicaments. How will Charlotte (Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown-Findlay) defend her burning bawdy house from the rash advances of London's latest pimp Isaac Pincher, played by the always punchable face of Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones Theon Greyjoy)? How will high society deal with Lady Fitz' (Liv Tyler) embrace of her sordid past? And will Lucy's dabbling in the molly boy trade put her neck in the noose? We'll find out in the weeks ahead! Toy Story 4 (2019)
EFrankly, we were prepared to be mildly disappointed and to cluck our tongues at the Mouse and wag our fingers at all of his hubris as we sat down to watch Toy Story 4. Nobody asked for this sequel. It was foolish to get this franchise out of the vault after you delivered an absolutely perfect trilogy with the most beautiful ending you could ask for. But you know what? They did it. Toy Story 4 can look it's predecessors square in the eye as it has just as much humor, heart, and a wonderful, emotionally rewarding finale. Not to mention it's the best looking Toy Story yet. This is a movie that was made for everyone, and it delivers the goods. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Men in Black: International (2019)
EJim and I have seen the latest installment in the long running Men in Black franchise, Men in Black: International. And it's okay. It's fun and entertaining, largely because Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are fun and entertaining people who have an easy chemistry. The plot is twisty, but not very smart, and the whole thing just struggles to find the big red "hyperspace" button that would get it into orbit where it belongs. But if all you're looking for is a bit of 90s nostalgia in a forgettable summer flick package, Men in Black: International will do. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dark Phoenix (2019)
EJim and I went to see the latest X-Men flick, Dark Phoenix. It's not as bad as it's Rotten Tomatoes rating would imply, but it's certainly not good. And it's unfortunately because once again a classic X-Men plotline is burnt (refried, in this case) and all-time great Magneto and Professor X performances by Fassbender and MacElvoy are wasted on a script with muddled characters and paper thin villains. Long time fans of the X-Men will enjoy some great stand alone moments with their favorite characters, and the core chemistry of Xavier / Magneto / Mystique work to get the film's emotional heart a brief jump. But ultimately the film folds underneath the weight of apathy and ugly FX work. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Chernobyl - Episode 5 - Vichnaya Pamyat
EThe final episode of HBO's Chernobyl, "Vichnaya Pamyat" derives it's title from the traditional prayer said at the end of an Eastern Orthadox funeral; "memory eternal". Our hope is that everyone who has watched this and will watch this in the years to come takes to heart this encomium, that we need to remember the cost of lies, the cost of taking our eye off our institutions and systems we setup to keep us safe and prosperous, because if you fail to do so the cost only becomes more dear. Thanks for watching along with us, we've loved having you all along for the experience. Final recommendations for more reading and watching from our fellow fans; this site has more information about the fate of dogs left in the Exclusion Zone, and it's not all bad news! Apparently some dogs have recovered and are healthy enough to be adopted! There are also two YouTube videos by Veritasium, "The Most Radioactive Place on Earth", and "A Walk Around Chernobyl". Deadwood: The Movie (2019)
EJim and I have come to Deadwood at long last, to behold it in movie form. We've seen differing amounts, but we have a lot of esteem for David Milch's western epic, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent this week at the old camp. We talk about our experiences with the show, how Justified informs our thoughts on Deadwood and vice versa, Milch's thoughts on mortality, and how amazingly the movie gave equal closure and tribute to it's legion of incredible characters. Good Omens, Barry Season 2 Wrap Up
EJim, A.Ron and Cecily team up to take on the end of the world as envisioned by Amazon Prime's Good Omens. Adapted from the novel of the same name by co-author Neil Gaiman himself, it offers a warm, funny, and human take on the Apocalypse, focusing on the unlikely friendship between a demon (David Tennant) and an angel (Michael Sheen) who have decided they like Earth like it is, thankyouverymuch, and team up to keep it that way. Chernobyl - Episode 4 - The Happiness of All Mankind
EHello, comrades! It's time once again to descend into the man-made hell of Chernobyl, now with 100% more puppy-murder! The deep irony of the episode's title, "The Happiness of All Mankind", underscores the misery of the people who were forced to evacuate, the soul and body destroying heroism of the soldiers and engineers doing the work that must be done, as well as the predicament of the people that have to decide between their principles and ethics and disobeying a political structure that can not only take your career and your life from you, but those of your friends and families. As we close the books on the immediate disaster mitigation and clean up, we look forward to what justice we can get for the victims and the world itself as we deal next week with the judicial and political fallout of Chernobyl. We got a lot of informed and professional feedback on the many questions we've been wrestling with on this podcast, but we were provided two documents in particular you might find interesting. First, a paper on how the "Iron Law of Oligarchy" applies even to democratic and open structures such as Wikipedia. Second, a specific example of the tyranny of Wikipedians in the form of a misguided-grammar Nazi. Fleabag, Dead to Me, The Perfection
EMe, Cecily and Jim have some recommendations and thoughts for your weekend viewing! We rave about the nearly flawless two seasons of Fleabag we just saw on Amazon Prime (00:00:00), Jim gives a bit of a preview for Netflix's new dramedy Dead to Me (00:00:00), starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, and then... we get to our review of The Perfection (00:00:00). This is a movie that Jim walked out on. Twice. Yet people are loving this film. What gives? Cecily and me try to defend the film on it's merits, but the truth is it's a hot mess of a film that tries to get away with a lot it probably shouldn't be trying, and you're either up to seeing it or you're not. Aladdin (2019)
EIf you're wishing for a three-way review of Disney's latest live-action adaptation, Aladdin, then listener you're in luck. Wish granted. Cecily, Jim, and I went to see it tonight with appropriately low expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised at how much fun and energy the movie provided. Better, the script smartly adapted the original, improving it's pacing while also adding depth to Jafar's intrigue and Jasmine's character, making it smarter and more relatable to modern audiences. The Tomatometer is kinda brutal for Al and friends right now (59% as of this writing), so take our review with a grain of salt. And we're still skeptical of the long term viability of these live-action adaptations, but we feel like this movie is proof that they aren't necessarily doomed to be pointless wastes of time. Chernobyl - Episode 3 - Open Wide, O Earth
EJim and I have seen episode three of HBO's Chernobyl series, "Open Wide, O Earth", and are shaken by the graphic depiction of the Chernobyl first responders' last days. We get to see the horror from multiple perspectives, the victims themselves, the and the friends and family who struggle to cope with this strange manner of death and the danger it poses to them. Meanwhile as the Soviets manage to contain and stop the fire, we gear up for the long war ahead; to fully contain the death and destruction of Chernobyl it will require 750k lives and three years of sacrifice. Will they be up for the challenge? And will they solve the mystery of the reactor's destruction, so that it might never happen again? All this plus some light discussion on the relative merits of free market capitalism vs centrally planned economies in feedback. You know, kids stuff. Willow (1988)
EThe Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy reaches it's thrilling conclusion with a look at 1998's Willow. The brain child of one George Lucas, directed by protege Ron Howard, and starring the delightful Warwick Davis, Willow still struggles to this day to find an audience. It suffers from simultaneously being curiously dark for a family film, but far too simple, uncomplicated, and broad to hold much interest for adults. While it boasted some cutting edge special effects for our day, the best one might be the baby Elora herself, played by a suite of infants. It shouldn't be possible for a baby to be this winsome and charming, but there it is. Stream Willow online: https://amzn.to/2w9uo1g Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
EJim and I take a belated look at the latest installment in the John Wick saga, Chapter 3: Parabellum. JW3:B, has some of the finest action sequences we've ever seen, but it's also rapidly approaching diminishing returns in terms of quantity over quality. We're all for combat innovations including insane knife work, horse and dog augmented combat, and up-armored adversaries, but there's only so many times you can watch Keanu kill a guy with a gun before you start checking your watch. With John Wick 4 looking to keep upping it's ante, is this momentum sustainable? We'll look forward to finding out! Detective Pikachu (2019)
ENovice Pokemon Trainer A.Ron is joined by S Rank Trainer Cecily to break down the action in Detective Pokemon. We were both surprised at how straightforward a kids film this was. To be fair, we weren't expecting Deadpool out of a Ryan Reynolds' starring Pokemon film, but parents looking to be thrown an adult bone over the heads of their children are probably going to be disappointed. Still, it's relentlessly, almost threateningly cute, and the more into Pokemon you are the more you'll appreciate the universe and background details they're packing into the scene. Chernobyl - Ep. 1 - 1:23:45
EChernobyl is already one of the most fascinating and relevant disaster movies I can think of, and we're only one episode into it's five episode run. "1:23:45" does a great job of introducing us to the men and women that will be affected by the nuclear power plant's explosion, sets up the political dysfunction that will impede the increasingly desperate and heroic attempts to contain the environmental catastrophe, and visually and audibly highlight the dangerous, hellish conditions the rescue workers and plant technicians were forced to confront. Is the Chernobyl disaster a uniquely Soviet phenomenon? Could something like this happen in the West? And what lessons about a pervasive culture of lying and misinformation can we apply to our lives today? We hash out these questions and much more. EThe next installment of Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy features Reign of Fire, a movie so-close-to-sort-of-kind-of-good that it lands squarely into the realm of "cheesy fun." Aside from Game of Thrones, no film or series has done more to advance the art of CGI dragons as Reign, and no other film even comes close in the coveted shirtless McConaughey vs. Bale category. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
EJim and I have seen the climax to a decade's worth of world building in the MCU, Avengers: Endgame, and would like to certify it 100% awesome. Sure, you might quibble with a few cameos you don't recognize, and the more you're capable of rolling with the "Rule of Cool" the more you'll appreciate the spectacle they're putting on screen. But it's hard to imagine any fan of superhero movies not respecting what an accomplishment this is; to get so many people across the globe to care about and invest in these characters through 20+ movies that they'll sit in the dark for 3+ hours laughing and crying with them. How does Marvel top this? Can't wait to find out. Please enjoy our spoiler-free review of the movie as well as a discussion of upcoming films and trailers, but if you want to hear our full, spoiler-filled analysis you'll have to be a Club Bald Move member! Ramy Premiere, American Gods 205 & 206 - "The Ways of the Dead" and "Donar the Great"
EJim, Cecily and A.Ron are here for a round table on Hulu's new comedy, Ramy, and the latest two episode of Starz, American Gods. We all found Ramy to be really funny as well as insightful, and if you've had to struggle with your religious identity with a strict upbringing (cough, cough) we're sure you'll relate to the material. And then, there's American Gods, which is all over the place, as Gods are wont to do. Conan the Barbarian (1982) - Super Serious Film Fest
ES2F2: Fantasy kicks off with Conan the Barbarian, a film that helped launch the career of one Arnold Schwarzenegger into the stratosphere. And sure, we can quibble with some of the sillier plot points happening in the margins, and some of the casting, and a lot of the hair and makeup, but Conan is a serious film with some great set pieces, an absolutely magnetic star, and it even manages to land a few points that approach the profound. Black Summer, Special, You vs Wild
EJim and I talk about our initial thoughts on Netflix's new shows; Black Summer, Special, and You vs. Wild. We ponder the age old question, what's harder to kill, the zombie genre or Bear Grylls? Hellboy (2019)
EJim and I saw the reboot of Hellboy and it's the definition of a mixed bag. Jim thought the movie was bad, but I borderline loved it. I have no explanation for my critical disparity, and I can see the issues with plot and humor that Jim and others are expressing but... I've seen a helluva lot of worse movies this year get better reviews. It's a damn shame, because while I think everyone can agree that Harbour makes an excellent Hellboy, the movie isn't likely to get the sequel his casting deserves. Learn more about your ad choices.
