Delano Mayor Proposes Community First Ordinance to Limit ICE Operations
The mayor of Delano, Salvador Solorio-Ruiz, is advocating for a new Community First ordinance to restrict how federal immigration agents from ICE can utilize city property. The rule would prohibit them from conducting operations at locations like community centers or parking lots without a judicial warrant. If approved, Delano would be the first city in Kern County to implement this measure.
This ordinance complements Californias Values Act, which already limits local police cooperation with ICE. The mayor emphasizes that it prioritizes community safety without entirely preventing federal agents from entering public spaces.
Following heavy immigration enforcement in Kern County over a year ago, which caused fear among immigrant families, locals like long-time resident Ramon Alcala support the move. Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco already have similar protections in place.
The city council will vote on the ordinance at their March sixteenth meeting, which could establish a new atmosphere for the area.
