Joining us today is Stef Feldman, the National Policy Director for Vice President Joe Biden's Presidential Campaign. Stef walks us through her career path from local government in Atlanta to the White House, shedding light on how important it is to work with a political candidate that inspires you and how Joe Biden has inspired and empowered her. She shares her experience working on the campaign, the day-to-day of her job, and then we dive into Biden's policies and perspectives. We talk about how COVID has impacted the campaign, Biden's policies to contain and recover from the virus and his plans to scale up testing. For our August Book Club we read The Comeback by Ella Berman. The book follows Grace Turner, a young actress who disappeared from Hollywood at the height of her career. During her rise to fame as a teenager, she was sexually and emotionally abused by Abel Yorke, the director who made her famous. After she's invited to present him with a lifetime achievement award she begins to plot her revenge. Even though Grace is a pretty unlikeable character we still loved her story and root for her revenge. This book isn't in either of our normal wheel houses, but we loved the story and hope you loved it too! Let's discuss in the FB group! This month, we read The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. This the story of identical twin sisters (and their daughters) spanning the fifties through the nineties. Desiree and Stella are inseparable growing up in the fictional light-skinned Black town of Mallard, Louisiana during the fifties in the Jim Crow-era south. When they are 16, they run away together to New Orleans. From there, their lives take completely different turns. Desiree marries a dark-skinned man and returns home to raise her daughter in Mallard, while Stella goes on to pass for white - hiding her identity and past from her new family. The book follows the girls' stories and their daughters, who eventually end up meeting via a chance encounter. We discuss colorism, the theme of running away throughout the book, our interpretations of the title, and our mixed reviews on the ending. Although this book has been in the works for 4 years, its release couldn't be more timely, as the story has such pointed views about race and privilege. For this month's book club, we read Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. We absolutely loved this book. It's prose, written in verse, which makes the story even more engaging (and the lines more powerful and poignant). This is the story of two 16 year old girls, Yahaira and Camino who lose their father in a plane crash. Both girls (growing up in New York City and the Dominican Republic, respectively) grow up loving their father and having a close relationship with him. But upon his death, they learn of each other. For this month's book club we're discussing The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendricks. This book came highly recommended by Grace's mom and it definitely sparked some fun conversation. While this is not the type of book either of us typically pick up, we wanted something more fun to take some pressure off during quarantine. The story follows Patricia Campbell, a southern housewife, who joins a true crime book club where she forms a tight knit group of female friends. When they discover that their neighbor, James Harris, is actually a vampire who is terrorizing the town and feeding on children, the women of the book club stand up to take matters into their own hands. This month, we read In Five Years by Rebecca Serle. We both absolutely loved this book and read it in under 24 hours. Before diving into the book, we do our usual quarantine catch up. We are both healthy, staying busy, and Tyrion (Grace's cat) seems to have developed a newfound love for Zoom calls. This book is about best friends, Dannie and Bella. Dannie is a little bit uptight and is one of those women who always has a plan and knows exactly what she wants. Meanwhile, Bella is a bit more flighty and romantic. On the night that Dannie gets engaged to her long-time boyfriend, David, she has an extremely vivid dream of where her life will be in 5 years. She's in a different apartment, with a different (and sexy) man. We then see how the next five years play out and what happens. Dannie is jilted when she meets Bella's new boyfriend Greg - it's the man from her dream! Bella falls ill and a series of other events happen to turn Dannie's life upside down. She ends up exactly where the dream predicted - discovering that fate is most certainly real. This book will make you cry - but the good kind! This is our favorite book from 2020 - we hope you love it as much as we did! This month we read Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison. This book combines some of our favorite things: rich unsupervised teens at a boarding school, secret societies… and murder. Ash is an outcast, relocating from England to attend boarding school at the prestigious Goode School in Virginia. Her parents have passed away, she has an abusive past with her father, and she definitely has a lot of secrets. When she gets tapped for the Ivy Bound secret society, things go haywire. Her roommate dies and now we are trying to figure out who did it and why. Even though we found (nearly) every character to be deeply unlikable, we still really enjoyed the book. We got to rehash our love for secret societies (and the movie The Skulls). Grace reveals what happens in her sorority's initiation rituals... and that she doesn't like Gilmore Girls (gasp!). For our December book club, we're reading One Day in December by Josie Silver. This was one of our favorite books from last year, so we had to make it a book club pick! What would you do if you had a "love at first sight" moment, but the man of your dreams turns out to be your best friend's new boyfriend? The book follows the three of them over the course of a decade through life's ups & downs and heartbreaks as they each grow and change. Grace reveals she once had her own "bus boy". Yesterday we talked about We Came Here to Forget by Andrea Dunlop and today we're so happy to have her with us for a special bonus episode where we talk about the book!
