Eating disorders comes in many forms, and it’s much more complicated than people know. “Eating disorder” (ED) is a blanket term for a variety of illnesses that greatly affect people’s eating habits and relationships with food. Many eating disorders involve a preoccupation with weight, but that is not always the case. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 9% of the U.S. population, or 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. Eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose. About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide. In talking about children and young adults, 81% of 10-year-old children are afraid of being fat. My goal is to provide you with the necessary information about the different eating disorders, how to recognize if your child is at risk, as well as provide reputable resources to find out more information so you can access support and services. An important episode for all caregivers!
