Episode 3: Speech and Language Delay in Young Children

Speech and language delays, if not diagnosed and treated in the child’s critical development 2nd and 3rd years of life, may result in social, emotional, or behavioral problems as adults. Children develop at their own rate, however by the time a toddler is 2 and 3 year old, and not saying a certain number of words and sentences, it may warrant an evaluation from a specialist. Parents can oftentimes feel anxious and overwhelmed if the child is lagging behind his/her peers. It’s a confusing maze of diagnoses and treatment options, not to mention an overwhelm of advice and opinions from other people. On this episode of Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Liz Seagraves, a certified LSVT LOUD® clinician, trained SPEAK OUT!® provider, approved provider of PhoRTE voice therapy, and a certified Hanen: It Takes Two to Talk® provider. She has worked in pediatric private practice, preschool early intervention, middle school, hospital acute care and outpatient clinics. Liz co-founded Golden Coast Speech Therapy, with her friend and former co-worker Crystal Anderson. Her clinical interests include voice disorders, gender-affirming voice therapy, Parkinson’s Disease and early intervention for language delays and speech sound disorders. In this episode, Argavan and Liz talk about the differences between speech and language delay, and what red flags to look for if your toddler isn’t meeting “typical” milestones. They address causes of speech delay in young children, and how today’s tech-centered society has impacted speech and language development. Furthermore, Argavan and Liz provide parents with tips to encourage their child’s speech development at home. This informative episode is not to be missed!
