Elimination Communication: Can Your Baby Go Diaper Free? with Andrea Olson

#164: Did you know babies can potty from birth? I had no idea until my guest Andrea Olson from @godiaperfree came on the podcast to educate us about Elimination Communication (EC). EC is a gentle, non-coercive way to respond to a baby’s natural hygiene needs...and Andrea is the diaper free GURU here to teach us how and why! Just like babies have the desire and ability to feed themselves solid food when the time is right, babies are instinctual when it comes to pottying. Andrea argues that pottying your baby can make baby-raising cleaner, easier, MUCH more connected to you plus it’s better for the environment. If you think a self-feeding baby sounds exciting, I think you’ll love hearing about your self-pottying baby’s potential too! Listen to this episode to learn: What exactly elimination communication means How Andrea began her love of teaching other parents this method Possible benefits of going diaper free Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/164 Links from This Episode: Go Diaper Free: Andrea’s website teaches how to use the Elimination Communication technique with babies Tiny Undies: Company which offers small and gender-neutral underwear to parents of babies and toddlers in sizes 6 months to 5T Her books: Go Diaper Free: A Simplified Handbook for Elimination Communication for babies 0-18 months The Tiny Potty Training Book: A Simple Guide to Non-coercive potty training Tiny Potty: a learning board book for babies 6 months and up Night Potty: a before-bedtime board book for babies 6 months and up. How Premature Babies Can Succeed with BLW with @doctorterrimd Terri Major-Kincade, MD

#158: Calling all preemie parents. Have you been told that premature babies can’t do baby-led weaning? Well it’s not true and premature babies CAN successfully start solid foods using the baby-led weaning approach. In this episode I’m joined by neonatologist and pediatrician Dr. Terri Major-Kincade. She provides critical care services to preterm and term infants in the NICU. Dr. Kincade runs a NICU follow up program where she sees premature babies getting ready to make the transition to solid foods. Dr. Kincade is talking about the unique nutrient needs of premature babies, past medical experiences and trauma that may cause preemie babies to have food refusal, and what questions you should ask at your NICU follow-up appointment to ensure your premature baby is safely ready to start solid foods. Listen to this episode to learn: How her premature sister born at 26 weeks in the 1960s inspired Dr. Terri to become a neonatologist before she even knew what that was Why she calls the weaning period “an eating experience” and what we can do to stop stressing that our premature baby isn't “getting enough” from baby-led weaning Which nutrients may be lacking in the premature infant...and what foods you can be offering (and which ones to stay away from) if you’re doing BLW with a premature baby What types of anemia your premature baby may be at risk for...and what types of food you can feed once your baby has the hang of self-feeding to help lower risk Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/158 Links from This Episode: Follow Dr. Terri on Instagram @doctorterrimd Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro program with the 100 First Foods™ Daily Meal Plan, join here: https://babyledweaning.co/program Baby-Led Weaning for Beginners free online workshop with 100 First Foods™ list to all attendees, register here: https://babyledweaning.co/baby-led-weaning-for-beginners Other Episodes Related to This Topic: Episode 119: Premature Babies: How to Estimate & Adjust Age for Starting Solids Episode 110: Catch-Up Weight: Why Starting Solids Early Will Not Help Your Baby Gain Weight with Rosan Meyer, PhD, RD 🌱 🌱🌱🌱 🌱 Not sure about which foods to offer your baby next? How Do I Know if My Baby Needs Feeding Therapy with @msdawnslp Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP

#152: When does a baby need feeding therapy? And how do I know if my baby needs feeding therapy? Even the phrase “feeding therapy” strikes fear into the hearts of parents and caregivers…but feeding therapy is not a bad thing! In this episode I’m interviewing baby-led weaning expert and feeding therapist Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP to explore feeding therapy for infants. Dawn and I co-teach a number of baby-led weaning programs together, but in this interview we’re exploring feeding therapy for babies. What are the signs of feeding disorders? Is my baby’s feeding issue normal or would we benefit from feeding therapy? Dawn is also discussing the different types of feeding therapy and why some of her clients only need a few sessions before getting back on track with baby-led weaning. Listen to this episode to learn: What sort of feeding issues warrant a referral to a feeding therapist...and what exactly does a feeding therapist do in a typical session with your baby? How does feeding therapy help babies who are struggling with the transition to solid foods get back on track to meeting their nutrition and developmental milestones? Who do I call or how do I get in touch with a feeding therapist if I think my baby would benefit...and will my pediatrician even know how to give me a referral for a feeding therapist? Pouches: Why Your Baby Doesn’t Need to Suck Pureed Food Out of Pouches with @msdawnslp Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP

#149: What are the drawbacks of using baby food pouches? In this episode I’m joined by pediatric swallowing expert and speech language pathologist Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP to talk about why your baby does not need to suck puree food out of a pouch. Ms Dawn and I are breaking down the limitations of pouches from cost, developmental and nutrition standpoints. While pouches are certainly convenient, their persistent use can actually inhibit your baby’s ability to achieve certain growth, nutrition and developmental milestones. Listen to this episode to learn: Why we want babies to transition past purees when they’re learning how to eat...and what a baby stuck on purees Why pouches promote suckling (an immature swallowing pattern) at the very time we want them to develop a mature pattern (chewing and swallowing) Why pouches aren’t as healthy as they purport to be and why their persistent use can actually inhibit your baby’s ability to achieve their growth, developmental and nutrition milestones. How Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Babies can Succeed in Self-Feeding with Vikash K. Modi, MD

#148: Can babies with cleft lip, cleft palate or cleft lip and palate successfully do baby-led weaning? July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness month and in this episode I’m joined by Vikash K. Modi, MD. Dr. Modi is a Pediatric Otorhinolaryngologist and Co-Director of the Cornell Cleft & Craniofacial Program. He’s explaining the difference between cleft lip and cleft palate and why cleft lip babies will have no difficulty with baby-led weaning and starting solids. For babies with cleft palates, there may be more challenges but Dr. Modi shares tips for promoting self-feeding success in these babies, even though the transition to solid foods occurs usually when the baby is awaiting cleft palate repair surgery. We also cover drinking for babies with cleft lips and cleft palates and how sippy cup and straw cups are not indicated for cleft palate but why open cup working will work. If you’ve struggled with feeding your baby breastmilk or formula because of cleft anomalies, please know that things WILL get easier when you make the transition to solid foods. Setting Your Baby's Sleep Schedule when Starting Solids with @babysleepdr Aubrie DeBear, PsyD

#146: Should your baby be sleeping through the night before you start solid foods? And how does a baby's sleep schedule adjust when you begin feeding real food? Sleep is SO important for babies (...and by extension, their parents!) but what comes first: setting your baby’s sleep schedule or starting the transition to solid foods? In this episode I’m joined by Aubrie DeBear from @babysleepdr. Aubrie is a sleep consultant with a doctorate in psychology and she’s answering all of your questions about setting your baby’s sleep schedule when making the transition to solid foods. There are so many myths about babies sleeping and starting solids and Aubrie is going to help put them to rest! If you’ve ever wondered about how long to wait after feeding your baby before putting your baby to bed or what types of foods to avoid later in the day (or does it really matter), Aubrie is the sleep consultant you need in your life! Listen to this episode to learn: Why is it ideal to wait until your baby is closer to 6 months to start a sleep training program (...and how that overlaps with the exact time when you’re starting solid foods too!) How the concept of “sleeping through the night” is a misconception. We as adults don’t even sleep through the night...but when your baby does wake up, how can you help the baby independently fall BACK to sleep so they don’t need you to make this happen! What Did Babies Eat Before Baby Food was Invented? with Amy Bentley, PhD

#144: Do you ever take a look at all of the crazy baby food items for sale today and wonder: how did they get here? What did people feed their babies before the advent of commercial baby foods? Do babies need to eat pouches? Do I need to buy baby food? As a new mom who also happened to be a food historian, my guest Amy Bentley definitely did. She is a professor in the department of Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University and author of the book “Inventing baby Food: Taste, Health and the Industrialization of the American Diet.” In this interview Amy is discussing the history of the baby food industry, shifting guidance and recommendations on the appropriate age to start solid foods over the decades, how pouches came to dominate the baby food aisle but how they also remove the socialization aspect from family meals. Listen to this episode to learn: How the guidance and recommendations about when to start solid foods has swung so rapidly over the past decade...but why it looks like 6 months is here to stay How the confluence of industrialization of the food supply, medicalization of labor and delivery and the discovery of vitamins catapulted commercial baby food into the market When commercial baby food is appropriate or useful and how social norms, cultural expectations and advertising and marketing efforts all shape our purchasing decisions Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/144 Links from This Episode: Amy Bentley’s current project from NYU: Food & Covid-19 Digital Archive & Collection can be found here: https://wp.nyu.edu/foodandcovid19/ Read more about Amy’s work at NYU here: https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/people/amy-bentley Amy Bentley’s Book is titled: Inventing Baby Food: Taste, Health, and the Industrialization of the American Diet Bentley, Amy. How to Make Fritters for Self-Feeding Babies

#143: Fritters are an easy way to help your baby safely eat smaller pieces of food early on in baby-led weaning. You can incorporate cooked whole grains, proteins and various types of cooked vegetables in fritters that your baby can then self-feed. In this episode we’re talking about the components of a basic baby-led weaning fritter recipe as well as substitution ideas if your baby doesn’t eat eggs. Listen to this episode to learn: What are the basic ingredients of a fritter? ...including ratios of ingredients and egg substitution ideas if baby is allergic to or the family does not eat eggs How to prepare fritters perfectly every time so you never end up with soggy fritters that won’t stick together! Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/143 Links from This Episode: Bowls Serve your baby fritters cut into strips about the size of your adult pinky finger. I use the ezpz Tiny Bowl and the ezpz Mini Bowl for trying new BLW foods. You can get 10% off all ezpz products at ezpzfun.com with my code KATIE10 (this is my affiliate code). Avocado Oil Frying fritters is an easy way to add flavor and fat. I like avocado oil because of its high smoke point, mild flavor profile and unsaturated fatty acid makeup. I use Primal Kitchen avocado oil and you can get 10% off with code FERRARO10 (this is my affiliate code). Low Sodium BLW Sauce Recipes If your fritters are dry or crispy they can be a potential choking hazard for your baby. We want to add sauces, dippers or toppers to moisturize foods and increase lubrication in the mouth which in turn reduces choking risk. I have a free download called “5 LOW-SODIUM SAUCES FOR MAKING BLW FOODS SAFER” and you can download those 5 free sauce BLW recipes here. Seasoning & Spices for BLW In this episode we talked about the basic BLW fritter recipe, but don’t be afraid to keep going by adding new flavors, spices and seasonings to your fritter batter. Babies don’t have to eat bland food! I love the low sodium seasoning options from Spice House, especially their Salt Free Spices Deluxe Gift Set which works great for baby-led weaning. You can get 10% off your order of $25 or more with code KATIE10 (this is my affiliate code). 100 First Foods List Fritters are a fabulous way to make those pesky whole grains safe for your baby to eat. Debunking the Biggest BLW Myths with Gill Rapley, PhD

#142: You should wait 3-5 days between introducing new foods. You should cut up food really small to reduce choking risk. Babies have to learn to chew before they swallow and baby-led weaning means no spoons and no purees. Myths about baby-led weaning are ENDLESS, and there’s nobody better than Gill Rapley to help debunk these BLW myths! Gill Rapley is the co-author of the original baby-led weaning book and the founding philosopher of the baby-led weaning movement. We’re diving deep into the most persistent BLW myths and debunking them one by one...and these are Gill’s words: “right from the horse’s mouth!” Listen to this episode to learn: LEGACY BLW MYTHS You should start with one meal a day and work up to three Baby must be able to swallow food and pass the tongue thrust reflex “test” to qualify as ready to eat You should introduce one new food at a time and wait 3-5 days between foods First foods should be cut in small pieces Fruits and vegetables are the ideal starter foods CURRENT BLW MYTHS Babies need to be able to sit for X amount of time unsupported to qualify as ready-to-eat Babies learn to chew before they learn to swallow BLW means no purees and no spoon-feeding BLW increases the risk of choking You can combine traditional spoon-feeding with BLW Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/142 Links from This Episode: Gill Rapley is the co-author of the original baby-led weaning book called “Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide”. National Baby-Led Weaning Day: It's a Thing with Gill Rapley, PhD

The first ever NATIONAL BABY-LED WEANING DAY is July 1, 2021. But why? Well, July 1 is right at the 6 month mark in the calendar year. If your baby was born January 1, on July 1 your baby would be 6 months of age. In this episode Gill Rapley is going to explain the other reliable signs of readiness to eat that your baby should be demonstrating, but with BLW day we’re driving awareness to the importance of waiting until the 6 month mark to start solid foods. We’re also chatting about the history of introducing solid foods and why historically doctors and health professionals have recommended starting before 6 months of age. And Gill and I discuss why we don’t celebrate this important readiness to start solid foods milestone in Western food culture...but how BLW Day can help us start doing so! Listen to this episode to learn: The evolution over time regarding the age at which to start solid foods for babies. At one point babies as young as 6 WEEKS of age were being fed solids (and we cover why this was a horrible idea and what the research now shows us about a safe age to start solid foods!) Why Western food culture does not historically celebrate this important transition to solid foods during infancy, but how BLW Day can raise awareness about safety and appropriate introduction of first foods beyond breastmilk and/or commercial infant formula How to identify the reliable signs of readiness to feed. And why Gill Rapley thinks observing for the disappearance of your baby’s tongue thrust reflex is a waste of time if you’re really waiting until 6 months to start solid food Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/140 Links from This Episode: Gill Rapley is the co-author of the original baby-led weaning book called “Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide”. Toddler Milks: Why You Don't Need to Buy These Formulas

##135: Does my baby need a toddler milk or a toddler formula after turning 1? What if you’re worried about growth or brain development or immunity, do these products make toddlers healthier? The answer is no, you don’t need to be buying these formula products and I’m breaking down every reason why. In this episode we’re looking at toddler milks, the fastest growing sector of the US formula market...and for good reason. The marketing behind these products is INSANE and you’ll be amazed at how brazen the formula companies are in pushing these products (that your toddler does not need!) Listen to this episode to learn: What are they and how are they different from infant formula? What ingredients are in toddler formulas and why shouldn’t children have them? But if my toddler isn’t eating great, aren’t these just like extra nutrition insurance? What SHOULD 1 year olds be drinking (and HOW should they be drinking)? Don’t Drip Food: How to Pre-Portion for Baby-Led Weaning

#133: What’s the deal with dripping food? Dripping food is our control-freak way of regulating the pace of baby’s eating...and while it may seem harmless (and cleaner!) dripping can actually interfere with your baby’s ability to learn HOW to eat independently and to recognize and respond to their own hunger and fullness cues. In this episode we’re talking about the draw-backs of dripping food piece by piece for baby-led weaning. Learning how to appropriately pre-portion your baby’s food is a better alternative to dripping and here’s how you do it! Listen to this episode to learn: What is dripping and why does it remove baby’s autonomy from the eating process? How do we pre-portion a meal appropriately if there are no hard & fast baby portion sizes for foods? Why we want babies driving the pace of intake and how that helps them learn to recognize & respond to their own hunger & fullness cues Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/133 Links from This Episode: TRY the ezpz Mini Mats, the 3-portion silicone suction mat mentioned in this episode. CPR Skills that can Save Your Baby's Life when Choking with Brandon & Caitlyn Doersken

#132: What can you do to get ready for starting solid foods before your baby is ready? Take an infant refresher CPR course. Getting your infant CPR skills up to snuff is incredibly important when preparing to start solid foods and baby-led weaning. Choking is a very rare - but real - risk, and knowing CPR can save your baby’s life. In this episode I’m interviewing Brandon Doersken, who along with his wife Caitlyn run an online CPR training institute. I’ve been a huge fan of their courses since COVID forced all learning online and having CPR skills gives you the confidence that you’ll know what to do if your baby does choke on food when starting solid foods. If you’re just getting ready to start solid foods and you have not (yet) taken a refresher infant CPR course, come check out some of the benefits along with ideas on how to implement the safety information you’ll use when you also begin baby-led weaning with your baby. Listen to this episode to learn: How online CPR can give you the confidence that you’ll know what to do in the event your baby does have a choking incident. Which household items we all have laying around that are actually a big choking risk and we don’t even realize it. I’ve always recommended parents discuss with their pediatrician and know their baby’s Benadryl dose in the event they need to use it when introducing allergenic foods. But Dr. Phil Boucher has a much different take. He does NOT recommend using Benadryl and has some very good reasons why he prefers an alternative to have on hand when you’re starting solid foods. In this episode I’m joined by pediatrician Phil Boucher, MD from @raisinggoodparents talking about all things Benadryl. Why do people refer to Baby Benadryl when there’s no such thing? Why is Benadryl so commonly mis-dosed and how can that be dangerous? What’s a better alternative to Benadryl when you’re offering potentially allergenic foods to your baby like eggs, milk and peanut, among others? If you’ve ever worried about what to do if your baby has an allergic reaction to food, Dr. Boucher has some really practical suggestions that will help ease your mind! Listen to this episode to learn: Why Benadryl is NOT his preferred medication to have on hand in the event your baby has an allergic reaction when trying new foods The alternative that Dr. Boucher recommends (it’s the over-the-counter medication cetirizine, branded Zyrtec as well as other cetirizine generics formulated for children) What the drawbacks of Benadryl are, including mis-dosing, somnolence (“sleepiness” or “drowsiness”) Steps you can take to be prepared in the event of an allergic reaction when you’re introducing your baby to new foods Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/130 Links from This Episode: Follow on IG , Follow on FB Join Dr. Boucher’s Raising Good Parents Community FB group here Link to Pediatrician-Developed Parenting Courses including Mighty Sleepers Course, Potty Training for Lazy Parents, & Unpicky Eaters here YouTube channel Raising Good Parents Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro program with the 100 First Foods™ Daily Meal Plan, join here: https://babyledweaning.co/program Baby-Led Weaning for Beginners free online workshop with 100 First Foods™ list to all attendees, register here: https://babyledweaning.co/baby-led-weaning-for-beginners 🌱 🌱🌱🌱 🌱 Not sure about which foods to offer your baby next? Dr. Sunog & I just launched our brand new food allergy program called EAT THE 8. It’s all about how to safely introduce your baby to the BIG 8 allergenic foods (+ sesame) and we’re also including a 4-week live Q&A component where program members can ask us any allergy related questions if you get stuck introducing these new foods to your baby. You DON’T need to buy into expensive supplement powder programs to introduce allergenic foods. Babies can learn to eat allergenic foods & we can show you how. Check out EAT THE 8 program at www.foodallergyclass.com & come join us in this FOOD FIRST REVOLUTION!!! How Do Vegan Families Introduce Potentially Allergenic Foods? with @plantbasedjuniors Alexandra Caspero, MS, RD and Whitney English, MS, RD

#127: How can babies be plant based and still meet their nutrient needs? In this episode I’m joined by Whitney English, MS, RD and Alexandra Caspero, MS, RD - two dietitians known collectively as @plantbasedjuniors. Whitney and Alex are sharing their expertise about raising plant-based children, including how families who don’t eat animal products can introduce allergenic foods. The Big 8 allergenic foods (the 8 foods that account for about 90% of food allergy) include 4 animal foods...and whether or not and how to feed for vegan families can be a stickler. Listen for tips on incorporating iron and other nutrient-rich foods in your baby’s diet, even if you don’t consume animal foods. Whitney and Alex also explain the difference between predominantly plant-based and vegan lifestyles and ways to introduce allergenic foods for babies of both types of diet patterns. Listen to this episode to learn: Why they had second thoughts about doing baby-led weaning initially as plant-based new moms...but how they ultimately overcame their fear and stuck to a plant-based diet for their babies. How vegan and vegetarian families can offer a variety of nutrient and iron-rich foods without relying on meat...and to get babies to actually eat their vegetables! What steps to take if you’re considering adopting a more plant-based lifestyle for your whole family...and some easy starter family meal ideas to begin with! Why are False Positive Results in Food Allergy Testing so Common? with David Stukus, MD

#125: Did you know that up to 50% of positive food allergy test results are false positives? Parents are ALREADY anxious about introducing allergenic foods and widespread testing when not indicated is making anxiety worse. In this episode, leading allergist Dr. David Stukus is bringing us the TRUTH about food allergy testing: why it’s so rampant, why in most cases it’s not indicated and why FOOD and in-home oral food challenges are the best bet for “testing” whether or not your baby is allergic to a food. Listen to this episode to learn: Why food allergy tests are so routinely over-ordered (...spoiler alert: it’s all about money in food allergy testing and you’re the one losing out!) What to do if your baby has an allergic reaction to 1 food and your pediatrician recommends a panel of tests (...”RUN!” is his sage advice) How families can do oral food challenges to introduce potentially allergenic foods to their baby...and why that is a way more reliable test than blood or skin tests Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/125 Links from This Episode: Follow Dr. Stukus on Instagram and Twitter @allergykidsdoc Dr. Stukus is the Director of Nationwide Children’s Food Allergy Treatment Center He’s also the host of AAAAI’s podcast “Conversations from the World of Allergy” Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro program with the 100 First Foods™ Daily Meal Plan, join here: https://babyledweaning.co/program Baby-Led Weaning for Beginners free online workshop with 100 First Foods™ list to all attendees, register here: https://babyledweaning.co/baby-led-weaning-for-beginners 🌱 🌱🌱🌱 🌱 Not sure about which foods to offer your baby next? Using an Egg Ladder for Babies with Egg Allergy with Carina Venter, PhD, RD

#124: What if your baby has had an allergic reaction to egg? Is there ever the option that the baby can eat eggs again? Yes. And an egg ladder may help. Carina Venter, noted allergy researcher and dietitian is joining me to talk about using an egg ladder for babies with egg allergy. She is a member of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Guidelines Group who recently published revised guidelines on the prevention and development of food allergy in infants and young children. In this episode Carina is talking about why ladders are used more frequently outside of the US than in (she also published the first ever ladder for dairy, the MAP and subsequent iMAP) and how to talk to your practitioner if they’ve never heard of an egg ladder but you are interested in using an egg ladder. Be sure to check the shownotes for this episode for all of the research documents and guidelines Carina is mentioning in this episode. It’s a lot. Premature Babies: How to Estimate & Adjust Age for Starting Solids

#119: When can premature babies start solid foods? If your baby was born before 40 weeks gestation you might have heard the term “adjusted age”. In this episode we’re analyzing this concept of adjusted or corrected age and determining what it’s telling us about your baby’s readiness to start solid foods. Babies who were born early need additional time to catch up developmentally before they are safe to start solid foods. Learn how to calculate your baby’s adjusted age, how long you need to use this corrected age for and the other signs to look for if you’re analyzing whether or not your premature baby is ready to start the transition to solid foods. Listen to this episode to learn: How do I know how old my baby is in adjusted or corrected age terms...and how does that differ from chronological age? What other signs of readiness to feed are important to consider once I do know my baby’s adjusted age indicates it’s close to the time to start solid foods? Why I Built a Better Bib with Bapron Baby Founder Kelsey Larsen

#118: Everybody knows a good bib is essential for starting solid foods. But not all bibs are really the best bets for babies. Kelsey Larsen’s first baby had a lot of sensory issues with standard bibs and that inspired her to create her signature Baprons and start her company Bapron Baby. Baprons are a pinafore-style bib that tie in the back under your baby’s shoulder blades. They’re a baby-led weaning bib that keeps your baby clean, but don’t restrict your baby’s movement and development like other full-coverage bibs with sleeves do. Kelsey started her business by designing and sewing the Bapron bibs by hand and selling on Etsy. Now just a few years later she is running a serious operation creating bibs and splash mats that baby-led weaning fans around the world use and love. In this interview Kelsey is sharing a bit about her business journey, what it has been like taking her product to market, how they select the fabrics and patterns and why she decided to do a licensed line with The World of Eric Carle of the Hungry Caterpillar. Listen to this episode to learn: How her mom taught her to make quilts in high school which gave her the skills to design the very first bapron bibs. Why her bibs cost more than other bibs and how her bet on using higher quality plant-based waterproof material in her bibs has paid off (...I have some Bapron bibs that have been used for more than 1,000 meals and they hold up!) The unique design features of her bibs that you might not recognize at first and why she refuses to put sleeves on the bibs despite requests from parents looking for more coverage Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/118 Links from This Episode: The Bapron Baby website carries all of the Bapron Bibs (Toddler size is for 6m-3T and Preschool size is age 3+) and the code KATIE10 works for 10% off at bapronbaby.com Check out the Bapron Baby splash mats for minimizing the mess and reducing food Follow Bapron Baby on Instagram @bapronbaby Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro program with the 100 First Foods™ Daily Meal Plan, join here: https://babyledweaning.co/program Baby-Led Weaning for Beginners free online workshop with 100 First Foods™ list to all attendees, register here: https://babyledweaning.co/baby-led-weaning-for-beginners 🌱 🌱🌱🌱 🌱 Not sure about which foods to offer your baby next? Eczema Management and Skincare Made by Moms in Medicine with Evereden Founder Kimberley Ho

#116: Kimberly Ho quit her job as an investment banker after seeing some of the shadier sides of so-called green and clean cosmetic and skin-care companies. She launched Evereden with the belief that there could be a truly clean line of skin-care for babies and moms. What we put ON our babies’ skin and why it’s just as important as what we put IN their bodies. Kim’s company Evereden employs a “Moms in Medicine” team of highly respected leading pediatric dermatologists who are also moms and involved in choosing every aspect of what goes IN (and stays OUT) of their skincare line. Kimberly Ho’s team at Evereden is working to revolutionize eczema management with quality, clean skincare products that WORK. We’re chatting about the link between eczema and food allergy risk as well as what to look for when choosing skincare product for your entire family. Listen to this episode to learn: How seeing the truth about so-called “green” and “clean” big brand skincare products was so off-putting that Kim quit her full time investment banking job to start Evereden Why the word “natural” can be just as meaningless in skincare as it is in nutrition (...”Poison ivy” is a natural skin product but we don’t want it on our skin!” Kim says) What ingredients to look for and what to avoid when selecting skin products for your baby...don’t forget your baby’s facial skin is probably the most delicate type of skin & has to be treated as such!
