At 11:00 am on this day in 1918 – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” – an armistice took effect that brought the end to the Great War. At the time, many referred to the conflict as the “War to End All Wars,” believing that the world would never again see violence on such a scale.
