Ep 14Episode 14: Gumball!

E

In this episode Marty and Chris compare two films where one inspired the other; The Gumball Rally (1976) and Gumball 3000: The Movie. But first, we celebrate the Oscar success of Ford vs Ferrari, with insight into the VFX process and the difference between sound editing and mixing. Motorsport.tv have released Heroes, Chris gives his opinion both on the network and Heroes. An Eleanor hero car from Gone in 60 Seconds has been sold and already listed for sale. In researching this, Chris turned up some interesting history on Tina, the '996' Porsche that's stolen at the start of the film. In the run up to No Time to Die a stunt car DB5 replica has been driven by some outlets, with a good writeup on Pistonheads. This reminded Marty of an old video of The Mercedes C63 AMG Experiment - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS.Season 2 of Drive to Survive is being released on Netflix Feb 28th!For this episode Marty revisits 1970's New York with The Gumball Rally (1976) while Chris goes San Francisco to Miami with Gumball 3000: The Movie. In this week's online highlights, Marty picked a Smoking Tire podcast with Fielding Shredder while Chris nearly picked Mauro Calo driving his Nissan GT-R camera car filming a Nissan GT-R for a NIssan advert in a Nissan behind the scenes video but at the last minute he chose Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer: Henry Catchpole’s Definitive Road Review. If you want to tell us if we’re right, wrong or to share something we should be looking at, get in touch via the following channels:Twitter: @AutomoviePod (https://twitter.com/automoviepod)Facebook: AutomoviePodcast (https://fb.me/AutomoviePodcast)Email: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

Ep 13Episode 13: For and Against: Gone in 60 Seconds

E

In this episode Marty and Chris change things up a little and have a lengthy discussion where they argue for and against Gone in 60 Seconds (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187078/), as well as rounding up the upcoming releases and Super Bowl car adverts. But first, one of our listeners put together a great YouTube playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLV0bDGUCMljRjqOyRE60HaHzvHksboec) of all of the videos and trailers that we've talked about in previous episodes. Our thanks to you, Sean! Road & Track (https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/entertainment/amp30563313/ferris-buellers-day-off-ferrari-auction/) have details of a Ferris Bueller hero car Ferrari replica going across the auction block. The team at Driftworks (https://www.driftworks.com) behind Outsiders (https://www.facebook.com/OutsidersMovie/) have started teasing the release of the sequel Outsiders 2, while the second season of Drive to Survive is due Feb 28th! For the Superbowl Porsche dropped The Heist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92sXWVxRr0g), with Behind the Scenes from Motortrend (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIqbHadXLnk). Walmart didn't have a car themed advert as good as their movie car advert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMcBBHpzKiI) from last year, but Hyundai was a surprise treat with Smaht Pahk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85iRQdjCzj0). And because the Superbowl landed on Groundhog Day this year, Jeep got Bill Murray and co-stars for a repeating adventure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QgBRvMmWk4). Finally, and most excitingly, we have a trailer for Fast 9 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSiDu3Ywi8E), the latest in the increasingly insane Fast & Furious franchise. It's no surprise to say that we're fully on board with this trailer, but there are some surprises in there... For this episode we've changed things up a little with Chris and Marty talking through a long-running disagreement over just how awesome Gone in 60 Seconds (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187078/) is. And Chris writes the show notes, so he says it's awesome. In this week's online highlights, Marty picked another from Harry’s Garage, Ferrari Testarossa Epic Roadtrip to the Sahara (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRjGN--R4pE) while Chris has been avoiding the joys of concrete and construction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULWOvVEeq0w) to instead enjoy a beautifully made BMW M3 CSL manual conversion. Ep 12Episode 12: Films in a Foreign Language

E

In this episode, sights are set away from Hollywood as Chris and Martin approach films not in the English language. For Martin the classic French car movie Taxi, while Chris dives into the world of Initial-D. But first, Ford vs Ferrari is in the news yet again with BAFTA nominations for cinematography, editing and sound AND OSCAR NOMS OMG for Best Pic, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing! F1 TV have released a new documentary series, F2: Chasing the Dream, a multi-part documentary series looking into the world of up and coming drivers in F2 (subscription only, sadly). The original Bullitt Mustang, as driven by Steve McQueen has sold at auction for $3.4m. For this episode's reviews, we watch a pair of non-English films. Martin revisits the French film Taxi (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0152930/) while Chris shuns the live action version of Initial-D to go with Initial-D 1st Stage from the original Anime. In this week's online highlights, Martin picked the fantastic Harry’s Garage Porsche Carrera GT film while Chris has been so deep into all things Japanese for this episode, he had to pick this documentary from Driftworks: Outsiders. Ep 11Episode 11: The Christmas Special

In this episode, roaring fires are lit and sherry glasses filled as Chris and Martin take an end of term look at films containing their favourite movie cars - Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller's Day Off - and give their top five lists of 2019's best online videos. But first, Ford vs Ferrari (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1950186/) is in the news again with Christian Bale's Golden Globes nomination for best actor, and Simon Brew talks Ford vs Ferrari in the brilliant Film Stories podcast (https://www.filmstories.co.uk/podcast/podcast-scrooged-1988-and-le-mans-66-2019/).. As this is a time for giving, we have no hesitation in asking our great listeners that, if you can spare a few pounds this Christmas, to consider donating to the great organisation Mission Motorsport (https://www.missionmotorsport.org). They are the Forces' motorsport charity, and we've both seen first-hand the amazing work they do to help service veterans recover from mental and physical injury and help them into work. They make a huge difference to the people who need it most, so please consider giving. As an end of term treat, we decided to look at cars we love in films that are otherwise not car films. Chris chose the DeLorean from Back to the Future (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088763/), and would highly recommend Alex Goy's great Carfection documentary DeLorean: The Man, The Car, The People (DeLorean: The Man, The Car, The People). Martin meanwhile went with the Ferrari 250 GT California from Ferris Bueller's Day Off (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091042/). For the top five online releases of the year, Martin went with: * James May’s Unpimp My Ride - Ferrari 308 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUQZ5msy0YQ) * This crazy trick could get you out of any speeding ticket (Alex Roy on VINWiki) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXJY06QYGjo) * MotorTrend Head2Head - Ferrari 812 Superfast vs. Dodge Hellcat Redeye (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn3AnPYm_Zg) * Tavarish driving his restored Fast & Furious Murcielago (all the feels) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoD6aC-hiLY) * There's no number five, as Chris had already pinched it. Chris's top five online releases of the year list is: * F1 Paddock Pass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd0HuQs_KRQ&list=PLfoNZDHitwjXYZSg3NfDuM4L0jyxL8v5l) * Red Bull Racing's zero G pit stop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQXGbep6S2c) (with special bonus Will Buxton Haas puns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou-5xSMsd6o)) * McLaren Senna: A Tribute To Ayrton's Greatest Lap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPgS8lOTnz0) * Everything Wrong With Gone In 60 Seconds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o96XlXNREXE) * Inside Chris Harris’ Dream Garage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiLImHQbjis) If you want to tell us if we’re right, wrong or to share something we should be looking at, get in touch via the following channels: Twitter: @AutomoviePod (https://twitter.com/automoviepod) Facebook: AutomoviePodcast (https://fb.me/AutomoviePodcast) Email: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

Ep 10Episode 10: I've Never Seen...

In this episode, Chris and Martin watch Ronin and The French Connection, two seminal films that have previously passed them by. There is also a spoiler-free review of Ford vs Ferrari (or Le Mans '66), and a discussion of the new Bond trailer. But first Ford vs Ferrari (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1950186/) a spoiler-free review, with references to The 24 Hour War (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4875844/). The new Grand Tour presents: Seamen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8AwizkBarM) trailer has been released, with the show hitting Amazon Prime on December 13th. We also had - at the time of recording - the teaser trailer for No Time To Die (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lrp0wJsXNEA) and it's fair to say Marty has thoughts. (The full trailer has since been released and can be seen here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og2vYP7VzUs). We like the old Vantage in it.) For this episode's reviews, we watch a couple of those 'I can't believe you've never seen' films. Chris sits down with Ronin (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122690/) while Martin dives into the William Friedkin classic The French Connection (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067116/). 'What has Henry Catchpole Done This Week?' is gaining momentum with the great Audi RS6 US Roadtrip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drkALluou3I) film. In this week's online highlights, Martin picked the fantastic Brundles Race the Nordschleife (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlN7QNnYr_4) while Chris has been so deep into GT40s, he had to pick this video from Kenny Brack in the wet at Goodwood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jF__B1xpJY). Ep 9Episode 9: NASCAR!

In this episode, Chris and Martin revel in the world of NASCAR with Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights. They also catch up with Michael Fassbender's Porsche progress, and Marty gets his Land Speed Record geek on with Bloodhound LSR doing its first fast runs. But first Michael Fassbender's Road to Le Mans with Porsche (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKduzfEGbn-GvYvsyTO-EO27c4FBi3UAs) continues, reminding Chris of Misha Charoudin's vlogs racing at the Nurburgring (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLy5V0TOg_Q7moKaXAg_b86GdPcrQxXDNt). For this episode's reviews, we go bootleggin’ moonshine and drinkin’ Budweiser - it’s a NASCAR special! Marty revisits Days of Thunder (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099371/) while Chris finally watches Talladega Nights (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415306/). In this week's online highlights, both guys cheat with multiple suggestions! While 'What has Henry Catchpole Done This Week?' isn't yet a feature, Marty liked Carfection: Alpine A110S: Road And Track Review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLVZ-SFgrys) but his Land Speed Record fandom meant it would be Bloodhound LSR hits 501mph (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yq_gevX9tI). This time Chris stayed on topic, not picking Nick Offerman's great NASCAR commercial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaaz5a3DlNY), but rather a mesmerising breakdown of a NASCAR pitstop with Sport Science part 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQQbEfr9irE) and part 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHnrtNAWx6g). Ep 8Episode 8: Famous Racing Names

In this episode, Chris and Martin discuss two famous racing names from the world of F1 with 2017's pair of documentaries 'McLaren' and 'Williams'. There's also a bonus review of the upcoming documentary 'Apex: The Secret Race Across America', some love for the much-missed Best Motoring magazine and Martin laughs at Christian Bale's Brummie accent in the 'Ford vs. Ferrari' film trailer. But first, Chris and Marty review Apex: The Secret Race Across America, and watch Michael Fassbender's Road to Le Mans with Porsche. For this episode, Marty discusses Mclaren while Chris goes for Williams. In conjunction with the Williams discussion, there's great background material from Peter Windsor on the Omologato Watches blog, and Clare Williams' F1 Beyond the Grid podcast. In this week's online highlights, Marty’s sticking with the Mclaren theme, and while not choosing Bruce Mclaren's Tooned, he went with Dickie Meaden Being Bruce: Driving Bruce McLaren's M6A, and Chris has been dipping into something completely different with some E46 M3 - titanium silver, manual, 18" wheels - Japanese Drift Battle heroics from Best Motoring. And finally, a clip doing the rounds on Twitter shows some odd goings on as Michael Knight steps out of KITT, leading to the headline Was KITT from Knight Rider driven by a hidden dwarf? Ep 6Episode 6: Car Chase Musicals

In this episode of the Automotive Podcast we talk about our favourite car chase musicals, featuring Baby Driver and The Blues Brothers. We also give our (spoiler-free!) thoughts on the first season of Netflix's Hyperdrive, and we can't work out how to pronounce C'était un rendez-vous. But first Chris and Marty discuss the finale of Netflix's Hyperdrive (https://www.netflix.com/title/80189648) and how there are Behind the Scenes videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6ZHDN45TEg) coming out now on YouTube from the competitors. Following on from our BMW Film Festival, we are told about a Mercedes Choose Your Own Adventure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZLCDVpMpCg) advertising campaign during the X-Factor, and The Road Rat magazine (https://theroadrat.com) publishes a Richard Porter (https://twitter.com/sniffpetrol/status/1173572917512298497) piece where he watches all the Fast & Furious films in one sitting. Our type of man! For the release of Ford vs Ferrari (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1950186/) (never Le Mans 66 in our parish!), reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival are in. First thoughts seem average, but we're still looking forward to it! For this episode Martin discusses Baby Driver (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3890160/) while Chris revels in The Blues Brothers (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080455/). And for this week's highlights, Martin’s been watching the Goodwood Revival 2019 AC Cobra battle in the RAC TT Celebration Trophy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekVQX6tMy78) with tweed, flat caps, glorious Goodwood, Spitfires, the Hun, beer with bits in it, Stirling Moss GOODWOOD.
