Episode 606 - Joe with the Flo

E

On this week's show I chat to Andrew Allen about our 3-0 win over Molde in the Europa League, the positive contribution of Nicolas Pepe after his red card against Leeds, a first goal for Folarin Balogun, plus Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Emile Smith Rowe making a good night for the Academy lads. Then it's Tayo Popoola to reminisce about Diego Maradona after his passing this week. Possibly the greatest ever to play the game, he was an amazing footballer and a man whose lifestyle left plenty to be desired, but what he did on the pitch was informed so much by who he was off it.Follow Andrew @aallensport - Follow Tayo @DJTayoBuy the Goodly Morning Christmas card here – all proceeds go to the Arsenal Foundation. Arsecast Extra Episode 384 - 23.11.2020

E

In this episode we go back over the 0-0 draw with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday. Mikel Arteta did make changes to his team, but they didn't really work in the first half. The second was complicated by the dismissal of Nicolas Pepe, and in the end a point in the context of the game was reasonable. We discuss the sending off, how the record signing blew a big chance, and Mikel Arteta's reaction to it. There's also chat about the importance of Bukayo Saka, as well as the club's dismal use of resources, before questions about the manager and his non-negotiables, the need for some stability, set-pieces, and lots more. On this week's show I celebrate the end of the longest Interlull ever, and talk to journalist Daniel Storey about the the demands being placed on players this season. E

This episode of the Arsecast Extra is brought to you by Interlull – the safe, new, hygienic product that cleanses your football bits. We make our way through discussion of the bleak greyness of the world right now, dodgy Irish accents, the internationals, Mikel Arteta hopefully making things better, before we come up with a very simple solution to our on-pitch problems. We then answer listener questions about potential injuries, media coverage in the Covid-19 landscape, Dani Ceballos, Emile Smith Rowe, overly-expensive Willies, favourite players and LOADS more. Here's the link to the Goodly Christmas card. Here's the link the #arsebiz stuff: https://twitter.com/arseblog/status/1326897761183281153 Hosted on Acast. Episode 604 - The well timed Interlull

E

On this week's show I'm joined by Clive Palmer to take stock of where we are after a patchy start to the season, and a disappointing defeat to Aston Villa. Will this Interlull be a good one for Mikel Arteta to take stock, and think about how he adds much needed attacking potency to his team? We chat about some changes he might make to his team to improve the attack and midfield, as well as discussing a couple of players – Nicolas Pepe and William Saliba – in whom we've made significant financial investment but perhaps not enough of a football one. There's also some news about a little initiative to help bring Arsenal fan businesses together with Arsenal fan customers.Follow Clive @clivepafc Hosted on Acast. Arsecast Extra Episode 382 - 09.11.2020

E

On this week's show we look back on the dismal 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday. There's a lot to unpack as we discuss a very poor collective performance along with some very poor individual ones. How much is Mikel Arteta's system at fault, when it comes to analysing players who are under-performing? Our creative problems come into sharp focus again as missed chances prove costly, and we talk about how this game needs to spark some kind of rethink from the manager. We make suggestions about how we could attempt to fix it, wonder if the absence of fans has played a part in sticking with this approach for so long, and lots more besides.  Hosted on Acast. Episode 603 - Hey Joe!

E

On this week's show I chat with Andrew Allen about our 4-1 win over Molde in the Europa League. It's a good scoreline, but there's still a lot to talk about. Nicolas Pepe finished with a goal and an assist, but it wasn't completely convincing. Joe Willock was superb again, but how does he get minutes in the Premier League. We also chat about Willian, Bukayo Saka, Mikel Arteta and his team selection decisions, Bernd Leno, the Aston Villa game, pay-per-view and more.Follow Andrew @aallensport Hosted on Acast. Arsecast Extra Episode 381 - 02.11.2020

E

It's a very goodly morning as we discuss yesterday's 1-0 win over Man Utd at Old Trafford. We've waited a long time for victory there in the league, so it feels sweet. We chat about the team selection and the way the starting XI executed the game-plan so well. Within the impressive collective performance, there were some eye-catching individuals too, and we shine the light on some of those, including Gabriel, Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin, Thomas Partey, and Mohamed Elneny – a player who probably wouldn't have been first choice for many but who made such a big contribution on the day. We answer listener questions about fine margins, foul throws, what Willian brings to the team (or doesn't), why we need to think about zones more than formations, the influence of Tim Lewis and LOADS more. Arsecast Extra Episode 380 - 26.10.2020

On this episode, we look back on the 1-0 defeat to Leicester at the Emirates on Sunday evening. Arsenal can rue missed chances and an abysmal decision to chalk off an early goal, but the second half performance in particular left much to be desired. We chat about some individual performances, like Alex Lacazette, David Luiz, Dani Ceballos and Thomas Partey, as well as our lack of chance creation, and wonder is it down the rigid system in which Mikel Arteta expects his players to operate. It leads to a in-depth discussion about the manager, his preferences, what kind of football he wants to play and how it impacts performances. E

In this episode we discuss the 2-1 Europa League win over Rapid Vienna. As well as discussing an impressive full debut from Thomas Partey, we delve into the issue of how we can start to become a more attacking team. Does it matter? Is the WSL now on an untroubled path to becoming a mirror image of the Premier League? And what about some of the revered women's football clubs that haven't been able to keep pace with the WSL's march to professionalism? On this episode we look back in the 1-0 defeat to Man City on Saturday, a result/performance which has generated a lot of discussion, and which is interesting to analyse because of the way people have reacted to it. We chat about the scoreline in the context of other defeats there in recent years, and the selection decision Mikel Arteta made in using Willian in that particular role. How much was this game Arteta v Guardiola? Could we have been more adventurous in general or later in the match as we looked for an equaliser? There's a lot on how to best make the team more attacking, there's Aubameyang in the middle stuff, and praise for the impressive Bukayo Saka whose form might have an impact on the way we use the captain. We then chat in some depth about the changes made to the club's scouting network, letting Francis Cagigao and many of his team go, and the way we recruit players. Is our approach sufficient in the modern game, particularly when both your scouting and analysis departments feel somewhat marginalised in the process? We also touch on the redundancies and how the players might feel, before answering questions about Wilfried Zaha, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and the Alexandre Lacazette situation. On today's show we look back on our record extending 14th FA Cup, following the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday. We chat about the excitement of the occasion, from watching at home to being at the match; the way it all played out from Chelsea's opener to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's winner and beyond; our tactical approach, the game plan, some good fortune along the way, and ultimately yet another FA Cup win. After that, we discuss what it means in this crazy season to have ended with success, the job Mikel Arteta has done and the impact he's made since taking the job in December, what the future holds for the club and certain players, how European football has an impact, and we also relive some of the best/funniest moments from the day along with LOTS more in this almost two hour long episode. Also, a big thanks to all our listeners for being here throughout this long, trying season, and we're so happy we've been able to end it on a high note for everyone! It's a special FA Cup final Arsecast Extra, in which James and I chat about how we're feeling ahead of game, whether it's more anxiety or excitement, before we discuss our team selection and how Mikel Arteta might set up his team and approach the game. Then we're joined by the legend that is Ian Wright to talk all about the final, his thoughts on the team, our strengths and how we should play, what it's like to experience the occasion as a player and lots more. And as usual we take listener questions which are, for the most part, centred around tomorrow's big game at Wembley.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Arsecast Extra Episode 364 - 27.07.2020

The Premier League season is over and we look back on the final day victory over Watford, in what was a fairly meaningless game for us. There's discussion of Kieran Tierney's first Arsenal goal, David Luiz conceding another penalty and setting a record in the process, and we reflect on an 8th placed finish overall. We're glad to see the back of the season, and lessons have to be learned, but we try to end part 1 with some positives to take from this campaign. In part 2 we answer listener questions about our central defensive options and what on earth we can do about them. We pick our FA Cup final team, do some Aubameyang/Arsenal role play over his future, Ozil and his likely absence from Wembley, how to stop Olivier Giroud and loads more. Hosted on Acast. Episode 588 - The sexy jobs

E

A crafty midweek bonus Arsecast for you, looking back on last night's frustrating, if not that surprising, defeat to Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta rotated but didn't get enough out of the fresh legs he brought in. We chat about the performance, lots of things we already know about it, the lack of creativity and the calls for Mesut Ozil to fill that gap – as well as the German's situation overall. Squad building, a reality check after two big wins, the imminent end of a frustration season, the Arteta/Kroenke thing, and lots more with Andrew Allen.Follow Andrew @aallensport Hosted on Acast. On this very goodly morning we look back on Saturday's FA Cup semi-final win over Man City, which sets up a repeat of the 2017 final against Chelsea. We chat about the approach to the game, Mikel Arteta's tactical set-up, some fantastic individual performances but more importantly a brilliant collective effort. We analyse the two goals we scored, our defensive rearguard action, Ainsley Maitland-Niles selection and performance, and what this result and this week has meant for Arteta and the club. Then there are questions about Alexandre Lacazette, how we deal with games against teams in which we're expected to be dominant, whether or not the results will have a negative effect on our transfer business, playing without fans, playing it out from the back and LOADS more. Here is Lewis' tatics column as mentioned in the podcast. Here's a bonus Arsecast for you because we love you. In this episode I chat with James Benge about Mikel Arteta's comments about squad building, after he told his press conference today it wasn't about challenging the board. We discuss the boss's relationship with Josh Kroenke, how he has now assumed the position of leadership which had been somewhat vacant, his desire for improvement and how it might happen. We also chat about Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Dinos Mavropanos and his loan move, rumours of a loan for Coutinho and, of course, the FA Cup semi-final against Man CityFollow James @jamesbenge Hosted on Acast. Arsecast Extra Episode 362 - 16.07.2020

E

On this extra Arsecast Extra we discuss the rather hilarious 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League. It was a game in which we were dominated and which sparked multiple incidents of amusement, not least the defensive errors which led to our goals. However, we had to be alert to make the most of them, and in the second period a committed defensive rearguard put everything on the line to keep the Mugsmashers at bay, so the team deserve credit for that. We chat about Alexandre Lacazette's excellent contribution, our strange set-up, Emi Martinez's brilliant late save, and Reiss Nelson's first Premier League goal, before we answer questions about Mikel Arteta's very pointed post-game comments about the need to improve the squad, the Martinez v Leno situation, what we might bring in if we sold Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the formation for Man City on Saturday and LOADS more. Arsecast Extra Episode 361 - 13.07.2020

E

On this episode we talk about the 2-1 defeat to Sp*rs in the North London derby, a discussion which revolves in large part around our calamitous defending and some of our sub-par defenders. We ask how much Mikel Arteta can do with such error-prone individuals but reflect on his selection decisions playing a part too. We also chat about the lack of creativity in the team, and how the defensive issues are a significant influence on that side of our game. We also answer questions about losing from winning positions, the need for European football because of the financial implications of a season without it, how at least there's clarity to what we need to do, the work Edu is doing as Technical Director and lots more. On this episode I'm joined by Amy Lawrence to discuss Arsenal's form since the restart, Mikel Arteta's demanding and forthright manner with his players and the executive committee, the contrasting fortunes of Dani Ceballos and Matteo Guendouzi, squad building and how much the manager is involved in the overall club strategy, some compromise in elements of our recruitment, the need to strengthen the spine, Edu's plan, and a brief North London derby chat. Arsecast Extra Episode 360 - 08.07.2020

E

On this show we chat about a result tinged with relief but also frustration. Arsenal should have taken more of their chances in the first half of the 1-1 draw against Leicester, but in the end had to hang on with 10 men after a late equaliser. There were plenty of positives in that first period though, including another impressive Dani Ceballos performance and Bukayo Saka's contribution from the right. We discuss the missed chances, the red card for Eddie Nketiah and whether Jamie Vardy should have had one too, and Mikel Arteta's post game comments about the officiating and if that's a good thing or not. We also have questions about the front three for the North London derby, if it's time to play Aubameyang up front, Xhaka as a central defender, the prolonging of the 5 subs rule and lots more.
