Episode 39 - Does Jesus Hate Guns?

Jesus Hates Guns. At least that's what one author at Patheos.com thinks. He quotes his own book as proof of his assertion, but not Holy Scripture. Pastor John Bennett and I dissect his claims and debunk them thoroughly. Sgt. Bill teaches us how to use cover properly in IDPA. Aaron Israel talks about all the creepy clown sighting. And John Correia of Active Self Protection visits with us to talk about the Bullets and Bibles Conference coming up on October 14. UPDATE: For those experiencing audio problems with their download, please click the "Download this Episode" link below and download the newest release of this episode which corrects these technical issues. I apologize for the inconvenience. Special Guest - John Correia, the founder and owner of Active Self Protection (ASP) in Phoenix, Arizona, joins us to talk about the upcoming Bullets and Bibles Conference. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill teaches the basic techniques for using cover properly in IDPA. Fundamentals of Defense - Don't be a clown. Aaron Israel discusses the widespread urban legend of the creepy clown and how we shouldn't succumb to irrational fear about the unlikely event that clowns attack. Mia's Motivations - Mia is on the road and will be back with us next week. Clinging to God and Guns - Pastor Bennett and I dissect an article by a man who uses his own book, but not the Bible, to support his claim that Jesus hates guns. http://www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-39/ http://www.CooksHolsters.com/

Episode 38 - A Time to Kill

This Week on Armed Lutheran Radio, author Greg Hopkins joins us to discuss his book "A Time to Kill: The Myth of Christian Pacifism." Sgt. Bill discusses the purpose of IDPA. Aaron Israel has tips for surviving a riot if you're surrounded while in your vehicle. And Mia Anstine is back from another adventure, with a review of the newly re-designed Remington R51. Special Guest: Greg Hopkins - The author of "A Time to Kill: The Myth of Christian Pacifism" joins us to discuss his book, and the origins of the pervasive myth that Christians should embrace pacifism. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill talks about the purpose of IDPA -- is it competition or concealed carry? Or Both? Fundamentals of Defense - After watching the riots in Charlotte, North Carolina, a couple of weeks ago, and seeing the civilian vehicles trapped by the crowds, Aaron Israel discusses ways to stay safe if you find yourself in the same situation. Mia's Motivations - Mia Anstine is off on another adventure! This time to West Virginia with Remington Arms to see some of their new products and to get some trigger time with the re-designed R51 pistol. www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-38/ www.CooksHolsters.com

Episode 37 - Don't Shoot! That Home Invader Might be Jesus

In this week's episode we take a look at the follow-up to last week's article "Why Bible-Believing Christians Have No Right to Self-Defense." Part two focuses on defense of life and family, and if you thought it couldn't get worse, you were wrong. Mia is back from Europe to tell us about her adventures, and we get tips from Aaron Israel and Sgt. Bill Silvia. Mia's Motivations - Mia is back from a whirlwind trip to Europe where she got to tour the Sako firearms and ammunition plants in Finland and to hunt brown bear in Russia. Fundamental Defense - Competition and defensive training are not mutually exclusive. Aaron explains how both can a great benefit to your skill as a defensive shooter. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill discusses the various ways you can carry spare ammo in competition, and explains the relative pros and cons of each. Clinging to God and Guns - Pastor John Bennett and I debunk the second part of last week's article which suggests (wrongly) that Christians have no right to self-defense. In today's article, the author discusses defense of life and family, and comes to the same conclusion thanks to his own political bias and willful ignorance of the context of the Bible passages he quotes. http://www.Armedlutheran.us/alr-episode-37/ http://www.CooksHolsters.com/

Mid-Week Meditation #6 - What Does it Matter?

Episode 36 - Do Christians Have a Right to Self-Defense?

On this week's episode we discuss the goofy gnostic musings of a gay Presbyterian who thinks that Bible-believing Christians have no right to defend their lives, homes, or property. A look at my violent allergy to jazz hands, and great tips from Sgt. Bill, Aaron, and Mia. Mia's Motivations - Mia Anstine has advice for how to choose your next training course by evaluating what you hope to accomplish and what you want to learn. Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel's weekly self-defense tip is about learning to be a better problem-solver. The gun is a specific solution to a tiny subset of problems that we might face. Many of those problems can solved before the gun ever needs to come into play if you learn to avoid trouble, de-escalate, and learn from the mistakes of others. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill warns against becoming the "Gamer Guy," a type of shooter you've probably seen on the range and you should take pains to avoid emulating. Clinging to God and Guns - Pastor John Bennett helps us debunk an article written by a gay Presbyterian at Patheos.com, who argues that the Bible can't be taken literally, but those who do should not own guns because we are spiritual being having a physical experience and the Bible warns us that possessions are not important, certainly not important enough to kill over. Or something. http://www.armedlutheran.us/alr-episode-36/ http://www.cooksholsters.com/

Episode 35 - Is Carrying a Gun a Christian Right?

Pastor John Bennett returns so you get full-strength, unadulterated Armed Lutheran Radio this week. Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel discusses the safety concerns and possible legal ramifications of pro-gun bumper stickers. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill has tips for learning to shoot on the move. Mia's Motivations - Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. And so will you as the weather gets colder. Mia Anstine discusses the need to practice concealed carry in your cold weather clothing. Episode 34 - How to Teach Kids About Evil

With the advent of the 24-hour news cycle and social media, our kids are exposed to news about mankind's horrific acts of evil more often than ever. From ISIS to cop killings in Dallas, to home-grown acts of terror like Orlando or 9/11, or school shootings like Newtown. We can't totally shelter our kids from this information, so how do we explain these terrible acts of evil to our children? Pastor Evan Goeglein of Faith Lutheran Church in Rogue River, Oregon joins us again to discuss the subject. Ballistic Minute - Sergeant Bill discusses the pros and cons of the two basic types of handguns you can choose from -- the all-steel classics like 1911's and CZ's versus the plastic fantastics like GLOCK and M&P. Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel discusses the critically important topic of teaching your kids gun safety. Mia's Motivations - Listen up, guys, because Mia Anstine is talking about ways to get the woman in your life interested in shooting. http://www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-34/

Mid-Week Meditation #4 - Win the Race to the Phone

Today's Mid-Week Meditation is a little different. I was finished with Episode 33 of Armed Lutheran Radio when I had the honor of interviewing Paul Lathrop, founder and co-host of the Polite Society Podcast. I decided his story, and the lessons learned from it, is so important that it deserved it's own show. So, today I present my interview with Paul and his account of his harrowing six-month ordeal with our legal system.

Episode 33 - #StandWithCap

We're geeking out in this week's episode! When Massachusetts Atty. General Maura Healy thanked actor Chris Evans for his support for her authoritarian gun control expansion by using the hashtag #StandWithCap, it rubbed the wrong way those of us who grew up with the iconic Captain America of the comics. It's just another subtle way the left is undermining and usurping the traditions and imagery of American values to support big government. We'll talk about the parallels between the Civil War story line from the comics and the gun control debate with Brandon Warr of War Zone Media. Ballistic Minute - Shooting partials in IDPA is a different test than USPSA. In IDPA hard cover, actual stage props, and non-threat targets can present you with part of a target, and mistakes can be costly. Sgt. Bill explains how to attack the different types of partials you might face in an IDPA match. Fundamentals of Defense - Aaron Israel gets back to basic and discusses the "AOJ Triad" — Ability, Opportunity, and Jeopardy — and how they are used to determine when it is appropriate to use deadly force in self-defense. Beyond knowing the law in your state, understanding this concept is key to deciding if you are justified or prosecuted for a defensive shooting. Mia's Motivations - Mia Anstine builds on Aaron's tip from last week, discussing how to arm your older children as they go off to college. They can't take a gun with them, and in many cases even less-than lethal weapons are forbidden. You can arm them with the gift of fear and intuition. http://www.armedlutheran.us/alr-episode-33-standwithcap/

Mid-Week Meditation #3 - The Gun in the Basket

I was reading the Large and Small Catechisms last week, focusing on the Fifth Commandment (You Shall Not Murder) and that reminded me of a story I wanted to share about a man down on his luck, Christian love for your neighbor, and a gun in a basket. This story didn't make it into episode 32, so I thought I would share it in today's Mid-Week Meditation.

Episode 32 - Fear and Worry in Chicken Little America

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Bob Owens at Bearing Arms calls it "Chicken Little America," a land where malls and airports go into panic mode because someone hears a loud noise. A Rutgers professor suggests that if gun violence has you worried, just turn off the news. We can't bury our heads in the sand and avoid the news of the evil world around us. Pastor Evan Goeglein of Faith Lutheran Church in Rogue River, Oregon joins us again to discuss how to deal with worry and fear as a Christian. Ballistic Minute - The ability to call your shots is a critical skill for competitive and defensive shooting. Being able to put your sights on target, pull the trigger, and know, without looking at the target to confirm, just where your bullet struck. Sgt. Bill discusses how to develop this skill in today's Ballistic Minute. Fundamental Defense - All too often we train and prepare for the threat from the active shooter, the stranger in the alley, the bump in the middle of the night. In today's tip, Aaron Israel reminds us that many times the biggest threat is one you know personally. Mia's Motivations - Not every self-defense situation requires us to draw our weapon, let alone to shoot. In many cases it's better to retreat, or avoid conflict and call police. Mia Anstine recommends you consider in what situations it would be appropriate to present and use your firearm. http://www.armedlutheran.us/alr-episode-32/ https://www.cooksholsters.com/

We'll talk about the upcoming election and the difficult choice before us and we discuss a questionnaire police chiefs submitted to the two candidates and what it tells us about what police are really concerned about. Mia's Motivations - Mia Anstine's been watching the Olympics and is inspired by the athletes stories of faith and how giving God the glory in victory and defeat applies in our everyday lives. Ballistic Minute - Sgt. Bill Silvia talks about taking training classes, what to expect, how to prepare, and the mental attitude you need to get the most out of it. Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel discusses the need to reduce administrative handling of your firearm to minimize the risk of negligent discharges. Bill talks about passing on your passion for shooting in this week's Ballistic Minute, Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense joins us to talk about his trip to the NRA Annual Meetings in Louisville, Kentucky, and Pastor John Bennett is here to fisk an article from a retired ELCA pastor which suggests that "strong" Christians must set a good example for "weak" Christians and eschew the ownership of guns, because owning a gun is like pagan worship and you might give people the impression that owning a gun is okay. But it's not. Or something. It's a bizarre "re-contextualization" of Paul's letter to the church at Corinth and we unravel the whole thing in Clinging to God and Guns.
