Passing through a desert wilderness is a common theme throughout Scripture. Many of God's choicest saints have spent time, alone, in the wilderness. And the wilderness can mean both a desert environment as well as a place of spiritual difficulties and trials. Israel spent forty years in the desert wilderness of Sinai and Jesus Himself spent 40 days in the wilderness being tempted by Satan. As believers, we too pass through deserts of despair, depression, and doubt. Doubt, however, is not our final destination, but a temporary, sanctifying landscape that reminds us of our total dependence on Christ alone. On the next two episodes of Apologetics Profile, we sit down with resurrection scholar and friend of Watchman Fellowship, Dr. Gary Habermas, who has also written and spoken extensively on the topic of doubt. What might you say to a Latter-day Saint missionary or acquaintance who questions you about the inerrancy and infallibility of Scripture? There is a growing trend in social media of Latter-day Saint (Mormon) apologists defending their faith. And because of the success of streaming shows such as The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, a general curiosity and interest in Mormonism among the general public has also spiked. In Latter-day Saint scriptures, Doctrine & Covenants section 82, verse 7 states"And now, verily I say unto you, I, the Lord, will not lay any sin to your charge; go your ways and sin no more; but unto that soul who sinneth shall the former sins return, saith the Lord your God." What might you say to a Latter-day Saint who asks you to define how you understand the concept of forgiveness? It is important to know that most Latter-day Saints understanding of forgiveness differs significantly from the traditional biblical doctrine of forgiveness. The official teaching of the Catholic Church directs its parishioners to pray directly to Mary to intercede to Jesus on our behalf (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) paragraphs 2277-2279). The Church also teaches that Mary was herself immaculately conceived and preserved from every stain of sin common to the rest of humanity (see CCC 490-492). But are these doctrinal statements in keeping with a biblical portrait of Mary? We will explore these topics and others on part two of our discussion with Italian pastor, theologian, and author Leonardo De Chirico. Leonardo De Chirico is the pastor of Breccia di Roma, a church that he helped plant in Rome in 2009. He served as Vice Chairman of the Italian Evangelical Alliance from 2003-2021 and now serves as chairman for the theological commission of the IEA. Previously, Leonardo planted and pastored an evangelical church in Ferrara, Italy, from 1997 to 2009. He earned degrees in History (University of Bologna), Theology (ETCW, Bridgend, Wales) and Bioethics (University of Padova). His PhD is from King's College (London); it was published as Evangelical Theological Perspectives on Post-Vatican II Roman Catholicism. In 2015, he published A Christian Pocket Guide to Papacy and A Christian Pocket Guide to Mary: Mother of God? through Christian Focus. He is a lecturer of Historical Theology at Istituto di Formazione Evangelica e Documentazione in Padova, Italy. Additionally, Leonardo is the Director of the Reformanda Initiative, which aims to equip evangelical leaders to better understand and engage with Roman Catholicism, and the leader of the Rome Scholars & Leaders Network (RSLN). Apologetics might sometimes seem like an off-putting, snobbishly academic endeavor for those among us who are more prone to delight in arguing with nonbelievers. But what might apologetics done properly look like? And what does practical, everyday apologetics look like for believers of all backgrounds and life experiences? In 1 Peter 3:15, we are all called to "give a defense for the hope that is in us, with gentleness and reverence." In that spirit, we as Christians are all apologists. Apologetics is then relevant to our faith, to the church, and to the wider unbelieving culture. What do charges of blasphemy against Jesus teach us about who Jesus really is? Clearly the Jews, Scribes, Pharisees, and even Caiaphas the High Priest thought Jesus claimed to be God through what He said and what He did (see Mark 2; Matthew 26; Mark 2; Luke 5; and John 10). Many skeptics, as well as Jehovah's Witnesses and Latter-day Saints have tried explaining away passages like Mark 2, where the Scribes thought Jesus was blaspheming. They believe Jesus only had the authority to forgive sins, not that He was God, the Son, incarnate. This week on the Profile, we will tackle this objection as well as delve into Matthew's account of Caiaphas tearing his robes in Matthew 26:65. Both passages (Mark 2:1-12 and Matthew 26:57-68) are solid evidence that Jesus, the Son of Man, is in fact God the Son, incarnate.
