The 54th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race commenced with its ceremonial start in Anchorage, led by junior champ Stanley Robinson. Honorary musher Mary Shields, the first woman to finish the Iditarod, started the race. Defending champ Jessie Holmes takes the seventh spot. Thirty-seven mushers, including thirteen rookies and four past winners, embark on the journey. Three non-competitive mushers, including former champ Thomas Waerner, also join the expedition to Nome.
