Holmes, who grew up in Alabama and developed a love for stray dogs, found his calling in mushing after watching Jeremiah Johnson. Hes finished in the top ten most years since his debut in 2018, with last years win bringing him $57,000. Despite the pay, he dislikes amateurs in a new race category and feels pressure to defend his title, as only two mushers have ever repeated as champions the next year.
