Federal Government Sues Former Juneau Docks Chair for Sunken Tugboat Costs

The federal government is pursuing a former chair of Juneaus Docks and Harbors board and his wife for nearly $1 million in costs to salvage his sunken tugboat from Gastineau Channel last year. The Tagish, a 107-foot World War Two era wooden vessel, sank in December 2022 near the cruise ship docks, causing a major pollution scare due to its diesel fuel and lube oil cargo. Despite Etheridges decades-long restoration hobby, he lacked insurance and couldnt cover the removal costs himself. The Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund covered the $914,794 bill after two months underwater. Now, the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit in Alaskas U.S. District Court as Etheridge hasnt paid anything. Derelict boats like this are becoming a growing concern in Alaska, with similar federal suits over other World War Two tugs in the same channel and recent charges against fishermen for deliberately sinking theirs.
