Cassie Lumba, a senior at Juneau-Douglas High School in Alaska, recently won the state Poetry Out Loud competition. She discovered her love for poetry in her freshman year and has since found it to be a powerful tool for self-expression. Her favorite poem, O Me O Life by Walt Whitman, resonates with her as it explores lifes struggles and the beauty of adding ones own verse. Next month, Cassie will compete in the national competition in Washington D.C.
