(The Center Square) — The nation's first congestion pricing system got underway in New York over the weekend after a last-ditch legal challenge failed to block the controversial new tolling program. New York’s new toll for drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street began just after midnight on Sunday after a U.S. District Court judge late Friday denied New Jersey’s push to keep the plan from going into effect. Under the program, passenger cars will pay a $9 toll between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends. New York officials say the toll will reduce tailpipe pollution and provide more funding for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the public transit system. Commander in chief for four years after winning election in 1976 in the aftermath of President Richard Nixon's resignation followed by two years of President Gerald Ford, the Democrat is remembered for negotiating a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, the Camp David Accords, and his post-presidential work for free elections, human rights and building homes for the poor with Habitat for Humanity. Carter also was president during the Iran hostage crisis, when a group of armed Iranian college students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held 53 American diplomats and citizens hostage for 444 days. (The Center Square) – The FBI has identified the driver of a truck that plowed into a crowd of people celebrating New Year's on Bourbon Street early Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 35. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen and U.S. Army veteran from Houston, rented the F-150 Lightning truck, the FBI said. Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said the agency doesn't believe he acted alone. The law enforcement agency said in a news release that he had improvised explosive devices that were found in both the truck and in two different locations in the French Quarter, body armor and an ISIS flag hanging from the tailgate. (The Center Square) – Federal officials said Tuesday that drones spotted along the East Coast over the past month do not pose a threat to national security or public safety. Four federal agencies – the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Defense – issued a statement Tuesday after weeks of reports about drone activity. In some cases, airports have been closed as a result of the drones. The Pentagon statement said that the majority of the more than 1 million drones registered with the FAA are used legally for commercial, recreational or governmental purposes. With 174 yeas and 235 nays, opposition from both Democrats and Republicans tanked the 116-page American Relief Act, 2025 which needed a two-thirds majority to pass. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday released its Producer Price index, a key marker of inflation, which rose 0.4% in November. The November increase is part of a 3% increase in the past year, which BLS pointed out is “the largest rise since moving up 4.7% for the 12 months ended February 2023.” Much of the PPI was driven by a rise in food prices, most notably the cost of eggs. “A quarter of the November rise in prices for final demand goods is attributable to a 54.6-percent jump in the index for chicken eggs,” BLS said. “Prices for fresh and dry vegetables, fresh fruits and melons, processed poultry, non-electronic cigarettes, and residential electric power also increased.” Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Greg Abbott for over a year for illegal border crossers inundating New York City, Mayor Eric Adams said on Thursday he now welcomes federal help to remove criminals in the city who are illegally in the country. After meeting with President-elect Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan, Adams held a news conference expressing his support for Homan’s efforts. When asked if Homan requested help from the city to target the most violent criminals illegally in the country, Adams said his goal “is clearly again with my target area.” Adams, a Democrat, said his goal aligned with Homan’s to improve public safety and reduce crime. The U.S. annual deficit is nearing $2 trillion for this fiscal year, almost double the record deficits before the COVID-19 pandemic, as federal borrowing hit more than $5 billion per day. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office reported that the federal deficit hit an estimated $1.8 trillion in fiscal year 2024, $139 billion higher than the deficit from the previous fiscal year. Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association will return to work after the port workers' union reached a tentative contract agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance. Federal authorities on Tuesday secured an indictment charging Ryan Wesley Routh with the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The indictment also charges Routh with four other counts, including knowingly possessing a firearm during a crime of violence; and forcibly assaulting, intimidating and interfering with a Secret Service agent. Trump was playing golf at his club in West Palm Beach when a Secret Service agent scouting the course about a hole ahead of the Republican candidate for president spotted a rifle sticking out from the tree line. The agent fired in the direction of the rifle before a witness told authorities Routh sped away in a Nissan sport utility vehicle. The U.S. Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday announced a slight cut to the federal funds rate, the first cut since March of 2020, when rates were near 0%. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell pointed to good data on the job market like unemployment, labor force participation and fewer job vacancies. U.S. lawmakers are calling for changes in how the U.S. Secret Service protects former President Donald Trump after a second assassination attempt Sunday. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was able to hide outside a golf course where Trump was golfing. Authorities say Routh pointed the barrel of an assault-style rifle through a chain-link fence toward the golf course, was spotted by an agent, who fired at Routh. The suspect was soon arrested after fleeing the scene. North Carolina is the first battleground state to begin the voting process, sending out absentee by mail ballots on Friday. Delaware is also first in the nation with a law of “60 days before Election Day.” The number of days ahead of the election to send out absentee by mail ballots in the other consensus battleground states is 50 in Pennsylvania, 47 in Wisconsin, 45 in Michigan, 25 to 29 in Georgia, and 24 to 27 in Arizona. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg kicked off a firestorm of controversy this week when he sent a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee admitting his mistake in caving to pressure from the Biden administration to censor Americans’ posts that contradicted the administration’s viewpoints on COVID-19. New polling on Thursday showed Kamala Harris with a widening margin over former President Donald Trump in Reuters/Ipsos poll published Thursday. It found Harris leaders Trump 45% to 41%. Among registered voters, the four-percentage point lead was more significant than the one-point lead Harris had over Trump in the outfit's last poll in July. The poll had a 2% margin of error. Over in polling guru Nate Sliver's latest models, Harris didn't fare as well. "Although we wouldn't advise worrying too much about the difference between a 52/48 race one way versus a 48/52 race the other way – it's not a big difference – this wasn't a good day for Kamala Harris in our model, as Donald Trump is the slight favorite for the first time since August 3," Silver wrote in the Silver Bulletin. "There's one big reason for that – Pennsylvania, which is the tipping-point state more than one-third of the time and where it's been quite a while since we've seen a poll showing Harris leading." President Joe Biden explained to reporters Tuesday in more detail his rationale for suddenly ending his reelection bid earlier this year. President Donald Trump outperforms Vice President Kamala Harris in a head-to-head matchup, according to a new poll. The Harvard/Harris poll released Tuesday was taken after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and asked respondents: “If the 2024 election for President were held today and it was between Donald Trump, the Republican and Kamala Harris, the Democrat, who would you vote for?” Results showed Trump beats Harris by four points, 52% to 48%.
