Ep 108Episode 89: JFK: Out of the Frying Pan in SE Asia (EDS 19)

In this episode, we look at how JFK approached American policy in SE Asia in 1961—the first year of his presidency. This is the 19th installment of our Empire and the Deep State series--an in-depth exploration of my new book American Exception: Empire and the Deep State. I am again joined by series co-host Ben Norton of Multipolarista as well our own Seamus McGuinness who is producing the series. Special thanks to Dana Chavarria for the sound engineering! Ep 106Episode 87: A Stroke of the State: Dallas at 59 w/James DiEugenio [TRAILER]

A special double episode on the 59th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination: Aaron speaks with the venerable James DiEugenio. After the discussion, Aaron looks at JFK’s “Peace Speech” at American University in which JFK called for “not just peace in our time, but peace for all time.” Calling for an end to the Cold War and for moves toward full disarmament, the speech was repeatedly broadcast in the Soviet Union afterward. JFK would not have long to pursue his vision for world peace. The speech was delivered in the Summer of 1963; he would be assassinated in the Fall. DiEugenio is the screenwriter and co-creator of Oliver Stone’s JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass as well as JFK: Destiny Betrayed—the four-hour cut of the film which is now available for digital purchase. Jim also runs the fantastic Kennedys and King website and is the author of Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case as well as The JFK Assassination: The Evidence Today. Ep 96Episode 78: NSC-68 and the Permanent War Panacea (EDS 13)

[Update: We fixed and replaced the original audio file which had a problem around the introduction] In this episode we look at the history behind NSC-68, the seminal document of the US military industrial complex. This is the 13th installment of our Empire and the Deep State series--an in-depth exploration of my new book American Exception: Empire and the Deep State. I am again joined by series co-host Ben Norton of Multipolarista as well our own Seamus McGuinness who is producing the series. The latter portion of this episode was already posted on YouTube because we thought it was so timely after the Nord Stream attack. I hope the larger, book-related portion of the episode also provides good context for this. Strangely enough, I added that extra material to the episode plan because I thought that all of the historical exegesis from the book was really relevant to our current moment. With the Nord Stream bombing, it turned out that I was more correct than I knew. Check out the attached PDF to see the slides we refer to. Ep 78Episode 62: The Deep Politics of Heroin w/Peter Dale Scott and Alfred McCoy

Released in conjunction with the upcoming publication of Peter's "lost" (read "stolen by the CIA in 1970") article originally intended for Ramparts, we present a 2011 debate between the two top experts on the Postwar Southeast Asian heroin traffic: Professors Peter Dale Scott and Alfred McCoy. I add some context at the beginning which will hopefully be of interest to everybody! Peter Dale Scott is the prolific poet, historian, and political theorist who gave us parapolitics as well as the deep politics approach. Alfred McCoy is History Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin and the author of The Politics of Heroin—now in its third edition. Apologies for the weird noises during the debate. Ep 74UNLOCKED Episode 59: Watergate and Vietnam w/Daniel Ellsberg and Peter Dale Scott

Aaron speaks with Daniel Ellsberg and Peter Dale Scott about key issues on the 50th anniversary of the Watergate arrests. Specifically, they discuss Nixon’s Vietnam strategy, the way these plans were threatened by the leak of the Pentagon Papers, and the mysteries around Watergate which collectively suggest that Nixon’s resignation was effected by forces to the right of Nixon himself. Daniel Ellsberg was an analyst for the Pentagon and RAND before he made the fateful decision to leak the Pentagon Papers—a top secret study on the US involvement in Vietnam from Truman to LBJ. Ellsberg is the author of two memoirs—Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, and The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner. He is also the subject of The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, an Oscar-nominated documentary that Edward Snowden credited for inspiring his own act of whistleblowing. Peter Dale Scott is a former Canadian diplomat and retired UC Berkeley Professor of English. He is the author of numerous books of poetry and prose, including The War Conspiracy, Coming to Jakarta, Deep Politics and the Death of JFK, Cocaine Politics (with Jonathan Marshall), Drugs, Oil, and War, The Road to 9/11, American War Machine, and The American Deep State. The discussion picks up from the last episode where JFK’s plans for a sovereign West Papua under UN auspices were derailed by the assassination of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. We cover the tale of how Allen Dulles and his allies managed to subvert Sukarno and JFK by sparking Konfrontasi and preventing JFK’s plans to provide aid to stabilize Sukarno’s government. In desperation, JFK planned to visit Indonesia himself in 1964 to solve the problem of Konfrontasi once and for all. This is Part 9 of Minding the Darkness, Minding the Light—our oral history series with Professor Peter Dale Scott. He is the poet, historian, and iconoclastic creator of parapolitics and deep politics. We continue talking about key figures of America's parapolitical history, including: · Donald Freed—prominent activist and co-writer of Executive Action · Carl Oglesby—major SDS figure and author of The Yankee and Cowboy War · Warren Hinkle—publisher of the legendary magazine, Ramparts · Huey Newton and Jane Fonda also make appearances in this episode With apologies, this episode was recorded while a team of workers outside Peter’s home were apparently trying to drill to the center of the Earth and/or operate some kind of massive circular saw. We did our best to clean this up as well as we could. The great Ben Howard should be rejoining us again for the next installment in this series! Special thanks to Casey Moore for the episode art. Extra special thanks to Dana Chavarria for the sound engineering! Ep 59Episode 46: Multipolarity w/Ben Norton

Ben Norton of Multipolarista talks with Aaron about the end of US unipolarity (i.e., global dominance) and the dawn of a new multipolar world. Unlike the previous multipolar eras which led to colonialism and two world wars, the emerging multipolar world is more than just white imperialist powers in competition with each other. After the discussion with Ben Norton, Aaron talks to Mike Lesiuk and Seamus McGuiness about the new American Exception website. The first article at the site is Aaron's 2015 piece, "American Exception: Hegemony and the Dissimulation of the State."
