Setting the Stage Nestled in the Caucasus Mountains on the border between Europe and Asia, Armenia’s long history has seen it caught between countless empires. By the late 19th century, Western Armenia was firmly under the control of the Ottoman Empire while a smaller Eastern portion was controlled by the Russians. The Armenians of the Ottoman Empire faced many obstacles. As a Christian minority in a Muslim-majority Empire, they were subject to legal discrimination and higher taxes. Over time, racial ideologies that privileged ethnic Turks opened new opportunities for anti-Armenian discrimination. Another significant obstacle was their role as a middleman minority. A middleman minority is an ethnic group that is overrepresented in occupations like bankers, merchants, and bureaucrats relative to their small overall population. Other middleman minorities around the world included the Chinese in Southeast Asia, the Gujaratis in India, and most famously the Jews in Europe and the United States. Although only a small percentage of Armenians worked in these lucrative jobs, all Armenians were subject to discrimination that described them as parasites, thieves, and leeches who were stealing the wealth of the rest of the population. This caused outbreaks of violence and persecution throughout the late 19th century. The Ottoman government regularly seized Armenian land to redistribute to Muslim and Kurdish settlers and the Kurdish Hamidian regiments were given free reign to raid Armenian villages as part of their resettlement. Despite attempts to muster international support, the Armenians were left to defend themselves and formed a number of impromptu militia groups to defend their towns, but the Ottoman authorities interpreted this as a sign of rebellion and cracked down hard in the 1890s. #armenian #history #worldwar1 #ottoman #armenianhistory

It’s a cargo cult that cherrypicks from the gospels shiny moral sentiments and glittering aspirations, like the work of some mindless magpie. A New Rival Gospel Never mind that Jesus’s moral mandates would be literally nonsensical if He was not divine and couldn’t offer eternal rewards for self-sacrifice in this life. (Try explaining “Turn the other cheek” to Ghengis Khan and then get back to me; I’d love to hear how that goes. The meek did not inherit the Mongol Empire.) Nor that claims of “equality” among all men only hold up if we mean “in the eyes of God,” since in our own sight we’re vastly diverse and manifestly unequal. Even the militantly atheistic, self-styled “scientific” Communist Utopia millions were willing to kill for was cooked up by Karl Marx as a thinly secularized knock-off of the New Jerusalem. Read historian Norman Cohn’s authoritative The Pursuit of the Millennium to learn how Marx’s program replicated the crackpot claims of self-anointed “prophets” who roused the rabble to murder the priests and pillage the local Jews. But Leftists are born with the same God-shaped hole in their souls as everyone else, so they plunder the Gospel to fill it, picking only the bits and pieces that please them to make a kind of taxidermied replacement Christ fashioned in their own image. These false Christs or antichrists are invariably cast as victims, waved around as banners, and finally used as cudgels … to pummel actual Christians. First the Peasants, Then the Workers The original radical Leftists of the French Revolution held up “the peasants” as the suffering souls for whom they fought — even as the revolutionary government waged a vicious, genocidal war against the real, live peasants of the Vendee region, killing some 300,000 for the crime of clinging to their Church, instead of the fake one the government had set up and imposed on them. A hundred years later, Karl Marx and his movement would claim the international working class as the victims whom they’d champion against the ruthless exploitation of capitalist oppressors. But Marx would fiercely oppose any moderate reforms that would improve workers’ real lives, since these might slow down the bloody revolution he needed to impose Communist rule. His followers would fight against any labor unions they couldn’t control. Of course, once the Communists seized power in Russia, then other countries, they would enslave the workers and peasants alike, putting them to work in state-owned monopolies, closing their churches, and subjecting them to totalitarian surveillance and persecution. Presented by Michael Doran A growing chorus of voices—from the American left and right—now calls Israel “a liability.” They say it's time to walk away. They call this "foreign policy realism." In fact, it's the opposite. Israel remains America’s indispensable ally. Here are five reasons why. One: The Neighborhood In geopolitics, as in real estate, three considerations are paramount: location, location, location. The Middle East holds 48% of the world’s oil reserves and produces nearly a third of its supply. Some assert that renewables are making oil irrelevant. Not in our lifetimes. Oil fuels industries. Oil fuels militaries. And oil is priced globally. Shocks in the Middle East hit the U.S. economy—directly. Others say America’s own energy boom makes the region irrelevant. That is shortsighted. What happens in the Middle East doesn’t stay in the Middle East. It moves markets, shakes alliances, and draws in hostile powers. He who controls the Middle East controls the crossroads of the global economy. Israel is America’s fortress at that crossroads. Two: Containing Iran Critics claim that Israel entangles America with Iran. This is a profound misunderstanding. Since its birth in 1979, the Islamic Republic has branded America the “Great Satan” and Israel the “Little Satan.” Everything Iran does, it does with that order in mind. To get to the U.S., Iran has to deal with Israel first. That’s why we, in the interest of our own security, must ensure that Israel has what it needs militarily. Israel is our front line of defense. If that bulwark is compromised, Iran will move on to its main targets—dominating the energy resources of the Gulf, and challenging America. They already have missiles capable of reaching Europe. Shipping those missiles to Iran’s ally Venezuela would put the Iranians in range of the U.S.—like Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962, an intolerable threat. Nuclear weapons in the hands of a terrorist state is not a threat only to Israel. It’s a threat to us. Three: Projecting Force Israel might be small (about the size of New Jersey), but it’s lethal. And it fights. We can’t say that about many of our allies. All talk a good game, but few are willing to put their words into action. Israel is different. It spends at least 5% of its GDP on defense. The U.S. spends 3.4%. Many of our NATO allies are struggling to spend 2%. Canada spends 1.3%. Israel’s air force flies more combat missions annually than NATO’s Western European members combined. From generals to conscripts, its soldiers are combat-tested. And they don’t ask others to do their fighting for them. “Give us the tools, and we’ll finish the job,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. As the world has seen, that’s not an idle boast. In a crisis, we want that kind of ally on our side. Four: Intelligence Gathering Israel’s intelligence service, Mossad, is unmatched in daring and results. In 2018, it raided Iran’s nuclear archive—in Tehran. In 2024, it launched Operation Grim Beeper, detonating Hezbollah pagers and crippling thousands of terrorists. These operations revealed deep penetration of both Iran and its proxies. The U.S. is excellent at gathering and processing intelligence data. So is Israel. But when it comes to human intelligence—information from people in positions of personal knowledge—Israel has no peer. When the U.S. needs eyes on the ground, ears in the room, or insight into the minds of our adversaries, we often turn to Israel. To say that without Israel the U.S. would be blind in the Middle East would be an exaggeration—but not by much. In case you’ve blotted those ugly memories from your mind, let’s review what happened in the aftermath of the botched arrest of career criminal George Floyd: The police officers involved were immediately pulled from duty, then quickly arrested and charged. The System was working. There was literally nothing to riot about, except the vague and tendentious claim that “systemic racism” was killing black Americans. The Marxist group Black Lives Matter used Floyd’s accidental death as a bloody shirt to wave around, demanding (and getting) hundreds of millions of dollars from large corporations to spend however it wished (for instance, on fancy homes and salaries). Conservative pundits and churches adopted that organization’s mantra and offered uncritical support — desperate to establish their “antiracist” bona fides and protect their reputations. A series of coordinated “protests” erupted across the country, demanding that governments defund the police.
