Having time to actually talk is a key component so you have time to put things into action. Anytime you are stuck or overwhelmed, take the time to stop and learn to keep yourself motivated. Making teachers feel heard and seen and creating a community where people can learn and fail and keep going is important for a collaborative talk sequence. Focusing is an element that makes teachers great. It transcends into every part of teaching. If we can help teachers really see their beliefs, we can empower them to not be focused on all the things but to instead focus on the foundational things. You have to have boundaries with your time and energy as a classroom teacher and mentor. Recognize within yourself that you need to stop and take a breather. In our minds can make things seem overwhelming, but we have to stop and think about how long it will take to do something really well. The power of asking questions and listening to the teachers you get to work with and understanding their values is so important to empower everyone at large. Train yourself to see the light and good to increase your motivation and the energy you are bringing to your students. 238: Diagnose the Disconnect

We can't help people grow when we are expecting everyone to learn at the same rate or in the same way. In order to lead or teach effectively, we have to be able to get under the hood and diagnose the disconnect. We have to let everyone grow in a way that is meaningful to them and we have to provide the support they need to get better! Tune in to hear tips on how to help diagnose the disconnect you may be experiencing with those you lead.QuotablesWe need to water our initiatives with intention and follow through. We can't just guess what we think is happening and apply a solution, we have to do case by case scenarios.Look under the hood of your own instruction and leadership to diagnose the disconnect. When we expect everyone to learn at the rate or in the same way we kill their potential. When we are growing people's skillset sometimes we need more rounds of practice to get muscle memory. When we know our people we can grow our people.Episode MentionsTeach Your Class OffEpisode 220: Bonus Interview with CJ ReynoldsEpisode 18: Seeds that Sprout Join the Simply Coaching SummitIf you support and lead teachers, this virtual retreat is for you! 232: Do You Manage or Lead?

Did you know that could manage and lead at the same time? You don't have to be one or the other, in any one role or title. What you do have to do is ADJUST. You have to be flexible and adjust the way you lead and manage, depending on what those that you lead need at that time. Tune in to hear actionable steps to hone your management and leadership skills. QuotablesWhen do you manage and when do you decide to be the CEO and the visionary? You can be a manager and leader at the same time without changing your job, role or title. If we only ever lead in one way we deflate the talent that is within our teachers. Managing people is necessary when they are new to something or low preforming. It can also be debilitating if when people are creative or come in with high expectations and a good foundation. You need both management and leadership to be successful. You need balance. When you are leading some people don't want any bumpers (like a bowling alley) and some people absolutely do want bumpers. You have to decide who you are leading.Set your processes for supporting teachers. Have goal setting meetings. Work one on one and ADJUST as you go.Flexibility and how we show up to serve people demonstrates our strengths as leaders.Categorize the people you lead. Who of those people needs more management verse a hands off coaching style.Always evaluate your coaching style effectiveness. How can you model instead of tell? How can you push yourself to do more of what your teachers need vs what you were taught? If you know what you need as a learner, don't be afraid to tell those that lead you.Links Mentioned in the EpisodeEpisode 133: You Don't Need a Title to LeadJoin the Simply Coaching RetreatIf you support and lead teachers + are EXHAUSTED, this virtual retreat is for you!Simply Coaching RetreatJoin the Always A Lesson NewsletterJoin here and grab a freebie!Connect with GretchenEmail: [email protected]: Always A LessonFacebook: Always A LessonTwitter: @gschultekInstagram: Always.A.LessonLinkedin: Gretchen Schultek BridgersBook: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn’t Teach You in CollegeLeave a Rating and Review:This helps my show remain active in order to continue to help other educators remain empowered in a career that has a long lasting effect on our future.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/always-lessons-empowering/id1006433135?mt=2Search for my show in iTunes or Stitcher.Click on ‘Ratings and Reviews.’Under ‘Customer Reviews,’ click on “Write a Review.”Sign in with your iTunes or Stitcher log-in infoLeave a Rating: Tap the greyed out stars (5 being the best)Leave a Review: Type in a Title and Description of your thoughts on my podcastClick ‘Send’

231: Great Leaders are Great Listeners

Do you tell rather than ask? Do you solve rather remain curious? Do you check out rather than lean in? The quality of your listening muscles are directly related to the impact of your leadership. Therefore great leaders are great listeners. Specifically practicing our listening skills can have direct impact on in the way we lead. Tune in to hear specific steps to fine tune your listening and leadership skills! QuotablesWhen we put our time and attention into something and we practice it often enough and become really good at it, it then becomes a strength. So why are we frustrated when we find a weakness? We know what we have to do to strengthen it. If we want to make a long lasting impact, where folks continue to use their gifts and talents to make our field better than we have to tune into what's really happening. Listening is the only way to restructure and rebuild.   Our model of great listening then translates to the teachers in the classroom and to their students. What if someone invested in you so much that they didn’t let you give up on yourself? Wouldn’t you come out of your struggle faster? Be the coach you wish you had.Listen by digesting what others are saying by not interjecting. Sometimes people just want to be heard.Show up as you are. People just want you to be beside them.Proximity and eye contact are important for closing the gap between you and the other person. Lean in and notice the cues of what they are saying head to toe. Shut up. Pause. Wait. Allow them to share more and encourage dead time.Rarely people need you to tell them what to do, they just need to talk it out. Follow through on your end of the bargain. Do your part. Following through makes people think you know care and they are valued. Pick one behavior and start there. Go hard in this one area and have a weekly check-in with your progress. Practice is the only way to grow. 230: Reading Instruction with Lori Poole

As a former educator and literacy coach in Title 1 schools for over 20 years, Lori has a passion for growing both students and teachers. She currently serves as a district literacy specialist, college instructor, and staff developer. She also is the proud mother of two struggling readers. While her children are almost grown now, she often thinks back to their experiences as students, in a world of reading instruction, which didn't always meet their needs. Lori believes her children, and all children, deserve expert reading teachers. She has a mission to help teachers transform into expert reading teachers, allowing them to not only provide the best practices of balanced literacy, but diagnose readers and make the instructional decisions needed to treat them. Lori believes all students AND teachers can GROW, one level at a time. Tune in to hear a full interview with Lori Poole in this special bonus edition episode. Quotables Teachers need us to just listen. They don’t always need a solution. They don’t always expect us to have a solution, they need just to help and counsel them right now. The best teacher is always the best student. We want to teach them and we want them to try something hard. When they try something hard and they fail as a teacher we want them to try again. For teachers, we want teachers to try, fail, take a step back and do it again. Resilience makes a good teacher. Not everyday is a step mountain, sometimes it's just a lot of hills. Don’t get stuck playing it safe. Spectacular failures (or mistakes) show that we are learning. (Cornelius Minor- We’ve got this). My philosophy (Lori Poole) is that we are always working to level up, but I don’t mean doing it at all at one time. Take a step back, reflect, accept where you are and then work to level up. What is one thing you want to implement? Take small steps to level up. As a coach, although I might think a teacher can work on many things, I have to treat them like a student. Work on small goals. When we want to start everything new and we start to fail, we lose all momentum. You can’t grab all the new things at one time. Why do some mistakes hold so much emotional value compared to other mistakes? If we can learn to add some equilibrium, I wonder if we would have more teachers who would be willing to try something new? Many coaches weren’t trained live. It’s important for adjusting in the moment and getting immediate live feedback. As a teacher you want to see how coaches work with YOUR students with the challenges you face in YOUR classroom. 229: The Future of Mentorship

We have lost so many great teachers in our profession and we are losing more each day. Teacher mentorship can help us save more of our elite educators but we have to get a better support system first. Mentorship in education has stigma of underperformance. We have to change our programs so that our structure is an effective support system to our teachers until their last day on the job, not just a program for beginning teachers. All teachers need a growth program throughout the entirety of their career. Tune in to hear more about the future of mentorship in education. QuotablesMentorship can save our best teachers. The best of the best athletes have mentorship, they have coaching until their last day on the job. Educators don’t view mentorship as a way to continue growing. We look at is as an underperformance. The culture and structure of mentorship has to be changed to a more effective model. Then we have to change the stigma. The goal of the meeting, awareness of events, relationship building, action steps, follow up and follow through is an actionable system to put into place.Style, System and Structure are the 3 S's of a mentorship program. What makes mentorship effective? Do you have a plan? Is there an accountability system? What are the expectations of the partnership? Are you consistent? What makes a mentor effective? Have you walked the road before? Ask questions, don’t make assumptions. Partner with them and use their strengths. You have to envision people as their future selves and help them get to their future in a way that is natural to them.Evaluate your program. What do you want to keep and what do you want to kick?Actionable steps over perfection, get started and execute. Tweak and repeat.Let's not lose any more good teachers because they haven't become great YET.Links Mentioned in the EpisodeGrab your ticket to the PD coaching summit on Dec 28th here.Join the Teacher Leader Mastermind Spring CohortInstructional Coaching Yearlong Comprehensive Guide (Editable & Growing Bundle)Teacher Mentor Kit for Mentor Teachers (Editable)Join the Always A Lesson NewsletterJoin here and grab a freebie!Connect with GretchenEmail: [email protected]: Always A LessonFacebook: Always A LessonTwitter: @gschultekInstagram: Always.A.LessonLinkedin: Gretchen Schultek BridgersBook: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn’t Teach You in CollegeCoaching Summit for Teacher Leaders: https://www.sctacademy.com/a/19590/oqFud8nNStay tuned for information on the Teacher Leader Mastermind!Leave a Rating and Review:This helps my show remain active in order to continue to help other educators remain empowered in a career that has a long lasting effect on our future.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/always-lessons-empowering/id1006433135?mt=2Search for my show in iTunes or Stitcher.Click on ‘Ratings and Reviews.’Under ‘Customer Reviews,’ click on “Write a Review.”Sign in with your iTunes or Stitcher log-in infoLeave a Rating: Tap the greyed out stars (5 being the best)Leave a Review: Type in a Title and Description of your thoughts on my podcastClick ‘Send’

228: Wrong Environment

Your training as an educator did not prepare you for the job you are currently doing. It's ok to acknowledge that this year is not your best and that you have weaknesses. What is important is that you also realize that weaknesses are just strengths in a different area. If you were to put yourself in a different environment, would you thrive? Tune in to hear how to acknowledge your weaknesses and identify if the environment is right for you to be your best. QuotablesWeaknesses are just strengths in a different area. Those of us who are willing to ADJUST are the ones who are going to make it out of 2020 for the better.Being transparent with kids. It’s ok to tell your students that virtual teaching is hard for you and it’s not your best teaching. (Danny Steele Twitter) You might not be good right now, but it doesn’t mean you won’t get there. Don’t look at your teaching right now as a weakness, you are just in the wrong environment. You are still strong. You still are good. There is another factor that is bringing you down at the moment. Just keep trying a new way and you will get better.Trust that normalcy is going to return. Hold off on your self judgement. You are not always going to be in a position where you are showcasing your genius, but you don’t have to be stuck in your weakness either.Make this weakness and your hard work this year count for something. 224: Supporting Student Adjustment

We have spent a lot of time discussing how teachers should adjust this year. We also have to consider how our students are doing with all the adjustments that they are facing. As leaders in their life, we have to take the time to acknowledge the adjustments they are making. We also have to help them process how these adjustments are effecting their life. Making adjustments might not be in the content we teach, but is a lifelong skill that will help our students succeed. Tune in to hear Gretchen discuss tips on how to help your student make critical adjustments this school year.QuotablesIt is our jobs as the leaders in their life to support students so they can come out the other side.Adjustment is a life lesson. It is something that we need to learn how to do to be productive citizens. It’s a tool for success in school and life.Acknowledge that adjustments are happening. Give students the opportunity to name it.Relate to their experiences. Share something that they may feel they are going through too.Create a safe place to vent and share.Talk about a strategy for adjustments.Have them envision their perfect adjustment. What does it look like for you to move through it?Give them a revision piece. If you could do it again, how would you do it?We want students to feel heard that what they are experiencing is hard.Don’t forget to chat with parents about how their children are adjusting. 223: Recalibrate Your Expectations

This year is quite different than other years of teaching. If we were using a rubric, this year wouldn't be scoring at the top. Therefore, why are we holding ourselves to the same expectations? It is time for us to recalibrate our expectations and make adjustments based on our new reality. In order to be successful, we have to examine our environment and constantly adjust. Tune in to hear Gretchen discuss 3 critical steps to help you recalibrate and weather the storm.QuotablesExamine your environment and recalibrate your expectations.Set your expectations and think about what is possible, what makes sense and what is realistic. Don't base your expectations on hope.Adjust your goals as necessary when things start to look better.Recalibration is a long term strategy based on what season of life you are in.What is different about your life in this season? Consider yourself and your surroundings.Nothing lasts forever. Remind yourself of your current expectation and stay out of the zone of comparison of what life was before.Make a habit of accepting the new normal and your new recalibrations. If you are flexible, you will weather the storm.Meet yourself where you are, right here, right now.Join the Always A Lesson NewsletterJoin here and grab a freebie!Connect with GretchenEmail: [email protected]: Always A LessonFacebook: Always A LessonTwitter: @gschultekInstagram: Always.A.LessonLinkedin: Gretchen Schultek BridgersBook: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn’t Teach You in CollegeLeave a Rating and Review:This helps my show remain active in order to continue to help other educators remain empowered in a career that has a long lasting effect on our future.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/always-lessons-empowering/id1006433135?mt=2Search for my show in iTunes or Stitcher.Click on ‘Ratings and Reviews.’Under ‘Customer Reviews,’ click on “Write a Review.”Sign in with your iTunes or Stitcher log-in infoLeave a Rating: Tap the greyed out stars (5 being the best)Leave a Review: Type in a Title and Description of your thoughts on my podcastClick ‘Send’

220: Classroom Relationships with CJ Reynolds

CJ Reynolds teaches high school literature and the history of hip-hop in West Philadelphia. He is a graduate of Rowan University and has been a classroom teacher for 15 years. He is also the author of the upcoming book Teach Your Class Off and the creator of the Real Rap with Reynolds YouTube channel. CJ's YouTube channel and book are aimed at giving viewers an authentic glimpse into the life of a high school teacher in the inner city while at the same time helping new and veteran educators be the teachers and mentors they always wanted to be for their students. His bare-bones teaching philosophy is simple: In the classroom relationships are king, and the job of a teacher is always and only about the students. Quotables One of the things that I learned early on is becoming a great educator is taking all of the things that make you who you are and using them to be a teacher. It is looking at what you have to teach and then thinking, what lens could I teach this though? If you make it about the kids, it gives you courage, one, and two you are trying to be relevant, not cool. A quite classroom does not equal an effective classroom. Don’t wait for anything. Be the teacher you always wanted to be immediately. I am very mindful at school that I only surround myself with people that I want to be like. It is your attention over your advice that wins with students all the time. 219: Being Effective with Lindsey Howe

Lindsey Howe is currently a first year PreK- 5 Assistant Principal/Instructional Coach for 3 elementary schools in Massachusetts. She previously was a 3rd- 5th grade teacher. She is an avid believer that all students deserve the best and are capable of learning at high levels. She spends the majority of her time pushing the educational envelope by encouraging teachers to learn and understand best practices in education and ditching practices that don't serve kids. In her spare time Lindsey enjoys working out, relaxing on the beach, and devouring the best PD books. Quotables: One thing I highly, highly recommend is collecting feedback from number one, your students, we don’t ask them enough for feedback about ourselves as teachers. And number two, from families in your classroom. Listening more than I’m speaking in instructional coach role has allowed me to help get teachers what they want more effectively. It gives me more time to process instead of just rattling back an answer, especially if it is a hard conversation. I cannot tell you how much of an impact my daily routine has on my energy and my attitude. When I make time for myself, working out, reading a book, unplugging, I am so much better as a leader. 218: Supporting Teachers with Nita Creekmore

Nita Creekmore is a wife and mother to four children. She has been in education for 16 years. She was in the classroom for 13 years as an elementary school teacher. She has taught four years in first grade, seven years in second grade, a little in third grade and two years in fifth grade. The bulk of her teaching career was in the state of Virginia and the rest in Georgia, where she now resides. Her 13 years of being in the classroom has taught her a lot about authentic teaching, being a life-long learner and the importance of hands-on learning. Nita Creekmore is now an Elementary Instructional Coach and supports teachers in grades PreK-5th grade. Quotables: Relationships are everything. One word or one negative conversation can break down that relationship so it is important to be very cognizant of your conversations. The great educators are the ones who seek out the learning that they want. We are all doing what is best for students right now, regardless of what your best is. I let teachers know I am a resource and if I don’t know something, I will find it. 217: Systems and Routines with Kelly Jackson

Kelly taught for 6 years in the elementary classroom- 2nd and 3rd grade. During that time she loved teaching and encouraging her kiddos but found that her strength as a teacher really was in the area or organization. In 2016, she started her blog, The Simply Organized Teacher. Shortly after launching that blog, she launched a podcast Simply Teach. In 2018, she left the classroom to move abroad (Germany) for her husband's job. Since then, she has been working with busy and overwhelmed teachers to help them get their systems and routines in place so they can have organized classrooms that allow them to focus on teaching their kids. Quotables When you can have a clutter-free classroom and an organized space to come in to, routines that your kids know the expectations for, it brings down that level of stress for the teacher. I have learned the importance of always being willing to grow because when you are no longer willing to learn more or grow more, I think you have kind of ended your time in the education field. I think as a new teacher it is really important to just pick one or two things that you are really going to focus on this year and get really good at those things before trying to add other things. You are going to have time to improve. When I ask teachers, what’s your biggest struggle, it’s always time and I think organization helps give you back some of that time. 216: Sustainable Classrooms with Mandy Rice

Teach On A Mission is a company Mandy built to help teachers build sustainable classrooms so they can stay there longer. After ten years in the classroom, she's now dedicating her time to helping teachers flip their classrooms so they can confidently get through their calendar and do more than lecture in class. She's supporting AP Psych teachers in her monthly coaching membership, and elevating teachers as the experts in the field of education. Mandy lives outside of Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband, who is a high school principal, and her three boys, all 6 and younger. In her free time, she's coaching her sons' baseball teams, crafting in her craft room or snuggled up with a good book. Quotables The “it factor” is a teacher’s mindset on how effective they believe they can be, with a healthy dose of reality as well. Hustling until you make it is not something that is going to keep someone in the classroom longer. It is finding that healthy balance between knowing what you can control and how you can be effective but also knowing what you can’t control and burning yourself out. I did some research to find how I could increase student accountability in my room while providing more time to do something different than just lecture and that is what landed me on the flipped classroom. 99% of my students get 99% of the content and I don’t think you can say that about a traditional non-blended, non-flipped classroom. Kristin McKeown is a mindfulness teacher, educational consultant, and coach. She helps educators integrate meditation and mindfulness into their daily lives so they can be at their best for their students, colleagues, and families. As founder and CEO of TeachingBalance, Kristin integrates her experience as a meditation teacher with her 25 years in public education to offer straightforward strategies, humor, and encouragement for teachers ready to prioritize their self-care. Join her FREE 21 Day Daily Meditation Program for Teachers! Quotables The reluctant readers were the ones where, if I could just find that book, I just loved turning them on to reading for fun and showing them that there were so many books out there that they didn’t even know about that are accessible and that were going to engage them in a way that, for whatever reason, reading hadn’t prior. I think there is something to be said for just savoring any kind words or feedback that any of your students or colleagues can ever give to you. Be very kind and accepting and compassionate towards yourself in whatever is going on for yourself. Slow down and give yourself a rest. We all know what it is like to come back after summer and you are so well rested and so energized and so ready to go. Are there ways that you can build that in? Kyle King also is the founder of Blueprint Conferences, a platform for educators to trade the life they have for the one they never knew they wanted. King also serves as the Dean of Students at one of Charlotte’s premier Charter Schools, Queen City STEM School. His life’s purpose is centered around advancing students through a comprehensive educational process that promotes excellence and provides them with the skills and resources to become globally competitive leaders of the future. He coined the phrase "You Do NOT have to be at an Ivy League School to be an Ivy League Student.” Starting out with local community mentoring efforts and a unique story, Kyle has become a highly skilled educator with over 7 years of experience offering empowerment in the areas of Curriculum Development and Design, Student Success Strategies, Personal and Professional Development, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Business and Economic Development. Through his experience as an entrepreneur, The SHINE Institute has grown to impact over 30,000 students around the globe. Quotables Behavior and instruction go hand in hand. We focus so much on jobs and occupations instead of what opportunities can our students create. In order for us to truly require excellence from our students, we have to stop operating in a state of mind of mediocrity. 213: Expectations with Erica Terry

Erica Terry is a 17 year educator, who currently serves as a professional learning consultant and coach committed to empowering co-teachers to build collaborative relationships and transform instruction in inclusive classrooms to meet the needs of all students. In addition to her role as a consultant, she also is an edupreneur and host of the Classroom to CEO Podcast, where she equips educators to build an online business and create multiple streams of income. While empowering educators to create a life they love embodies her professional passion, her husband, Melvin and daughter, Eva are the driving force and greatest blessings in her life. Quotables At every level, no matter if you are an administrator or a teacher, definitely set expectations. As long as I remained frustrated about it, it was never going to improve so I focused on making that situation (co-teaching) as positive as I could When you are going through those hard times, there is always a purpose behind it. You may not recognize what it is in the moment but if you stay committed to it and keep working to try and solve and get through it the best you can, one day you are going to look back and be like, “Wow! If I did not go through that, I would not be able to appreciate where I am now.” Start small. Change one little aspect, work on one little part and when you get that, add something else to it. One day you will walk in and you are just rocking and rolling. Once you connect with them, once you get them hooked, there is nothing that they will not do for you. 212: Classroom Tips with Lisa Johnson

Lisa Johnson has 19+ years of edu experience ranging from teaching HS English & MS Math to international curriculum development, creating and presenting workshops, and even running technology integration camps across the state. She holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, & Tech and currently serves as an Educational Technologist for a 1:1 iPad H.S. in Austin, Texas. Additionally, she has been recognized and selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator and PBS Digital Innovator. Lisa is passionate about college and career ready skills, instructional design, digital portfolios, research and curation, slide design, social emotional learning, and professional development for students. She is also the author of two books, Creatively Productive: Essential Skills for Tackling Time Wasters, Clearing the Clutter, and Succeeding in School—and Life! and Cultivating Communication in the Classroom: Future-Ready Skills for Secondary Students (Corwin Teaching Essentials). Quotables You need that piece of self-care. Yes you need to be authentic but it is sometimes hard to be authentic when you are not really understanding who you are and what you value and where you want to go in education and what you want to do with the content and your students. I think you should be open to learn from anybody who inspires you. What I try and do is figure out what are my values, what are my goals, what do I want to learn? Because I don’t think you can stay current in everything, there is not really a way to do that. A lot of times kids just need to know how to be good human beings and to deal with all of these things in the current world that is just thrust upon them. Modeling how we handle situations is really important. Stamp of Approval Creatively Productive: Essential Skills for Tackling Time Wasters, Clearing the Clutter, and Succeeding in School—and Life! 211: Making a Difference with Kim Strobel

Kim Strobel is the owner of Strobel Education, education consultant, and motivational speaker. She’s its driving force. Her wisdom, positivity, and strength inform every aspect—and it shows in the inspiring workshops she presents to teachers who seek to make a difference. She puts herself “in the trenches” with teachers because she was once there herself and knows how important support and encouragement are in creating a successful classroom. A licensed ELA teacher for grades K-12, Kim has taught in classrooms at all grade levels during her almost 20 years as an education professional. She began her career teaching fourth grade, during which time she served on numerous committees devoted to improving the curriculum and culture of the schools. She next served as a K-12 Literacy Coordinator, helping to develop a school-wide plan to improve literacy achievement and implement new common core literacy standards. Kim found her next challenge as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for a school district, during which time she developed curriculum in all content areas, K-12; collaborated with teachers and administrators to identify instructional needs; and served as a liaison with state and local agencies. Throughout her career, Kim has been recognized at the state and local level for her achievements and contributions to the education field. In 2010, she was awarded a grant from the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship, which she used to study the practice of meditation and how to use it in the classroom. And most recently, she’s taken her vision of reimagining education to the national stage as a featured keynote speaker at the Innovative Schools Summit in Atlanta, and the School Discipline Conference in Las Vegas. Kim has recently added the role of Happiness Coach to her lengthy resume. Her new business, Kim Strobel – Live Events and Retreats, guides individuals toward rediscovering their authentic selves and reclaiming their personal and professional joy. Kim sprinkles happiness tips and tricks into her education workshops, ensuring teachers reenter their classrooms with renewed purpose and passion. Professionally, Kim’s a teacher, a consultant, a speaker, a happiness coach and an aspiring author. But her personal life is just as full. When she’s not firing up educators with her signature mix of excitement and experience, she’s a die-hard runner, an advocate for her community’s abandoned animals, and a family-oriented gal who loves spending time with her husband Scott, their four children, two grandkids, and three pups. Quotables Even though the teachers do not have the reciprocal pay that they deserve and they certainly don’t get the pats on the back or the accolades, day after day they show up and do what is best for kids because they absolutely have a love for helping students learn to succeed in life. Knowing how to have relationships with students, that is the X-factor. A positive brain is 31% more productive than a brain that is at negative, neutral, or stressed. 210: School Leadership with Missy Emler

Missy is the Director of Innovation at a regional service agency in Wisconsin and the Educational Administration Program Coordinator at the University Wisconsin-Platteville. When engaging in conversations with Missy, her energy and enthusiasm for learning are contagious. She is a relentless advocate for school leaders and their learning needs as they maneuver their way through this time of massive change in education. Missy is the parent of three children. You can also check out the first time Missy was a guest on the podcast here: Episode 20: Bonus Edition - Interview with Melissa Emler Quotables I have stopped talking about the tools and started talking about the function. I always ask what they are trying to accomplish. We need to make sure that what we believe about learning connects to what’s happening in the world. So often, what we do in schools and what we do in classrooms may or may not match up to what we believe about learning. Do our kids find joy in our classrooms and what is the source of that joy? We never need to fix students. We need to create the spaces and the experiences that remove the barrier. Really hone in on what you want to learn and how that impacts the learners in your classroom. How are we celebrating all of our learners and how are we celebrating learning more than achievement? If we really want to learn and we really want to do the best work for our kids, it isn’t just roses, it is kind of a lot of thorns too. You have to find the balance. 209: Reverse the Chain of Command

If you want to truly hone your leadership craft in a way that has a tremendous impact, ask the right people for feedback. You can read all the books, follow all the people, and take all the conferences, but if you do not hear from the ones you lead about how they need and want to be led better, then you’ll never transform into the most impactful leader you can become. Tune in for 3 easy steps on how to reverse the chain of command and achieve new heights in your leadership.QuotablesWhen I paid attention to the reaction and the response of those I was leading, I started to collect what I call intel. I used that insight to adjust my approach and my strategy. The more that I reflect and pay attention, the better I get at adjusting in the moment. You might have to read between some of the word choices or exaggerations but I promise you there are nuggets of truth and helpful redirection if you look closely enough.I would apologize and rephrase what I said so that what I meant had a chance to make it to their ears and to their minds and to hearts. You want to know what happened, when does it often occur, and what do you wish had happened instead? The worst thing you can do is problem solve, and your next solution still is not helpful!I’ve got to know not only what is not working but more importantly, how it is that you want it to work.We want to repair our missteps so that we can be better faster. When you lead people, their feedback is personal and unique. This is a long game, it’s never over. 206: Are you Dying, Pruning or Growing?

We are all learners, honing our craft so we can better serve those we impact. Brian Mendler says, “Every plant has their own requirements in order to grow…and so do people.” We can get caught up in seasons that leave us dying instead of thriving, or pruning instead of moving forward, or growing to greater heights. Whatever the season, we can better understand what requirements we have to grow and how we can advocate for those opportunities in abundance. Tune in for your action steps!Inspiration for this episode brought to you by:        Quotables:People have their own requirements in order to grow so first, do you even know what your own requirements are? Second, have you written them down or even verbally stated them out loud? And third, are you advocating for what it is you need and want to grow?I urge you to really think about the characteristics that make you thrive and grow.If you had to name three requirements to grow and to thrive, what are they?Every time you feel yourself getting upset about your circumstances in relation to growing and learning, look at this list. What from the current situation or opportunity is missing? When you bring a solution to the table by providing a tweak to some current growth model that the school uses and you say how you think it could be better, they are going to be on board. You are providing them insight that they did not have access to before. Most often you are not the only one requiring that aspect and many are going to thank you for speaking up. You make everyone better when you make suggestions that are to help the progress and the growth of those around you.You are on the inside, in the trenches, doing the work so your voice and your perspective matter.Do not stay a dying talent. It is not serving you or serving the people you are meant to impact. You deserve better. You are here for a reason and it isn’t to be withering away. You don’t have to be moving at mach 10 speed to be productive. You just have to be intentional with how you operate within the season that you are in.Stamp of Approval: Brian Mendler - https://www.brianmendler.com/That One Kid - https://tlc-sems.com/product/that-one-kid/Watch Your Mouth - https://tlc-sems.com/product/watch-your-mouth/Grab a Slot on my CalendarLet’s chat about your currents and develop a plan. 205: Teacher Empowerment with Barry White, Jr.

Popularized as the “Handshake Teacher,” Barry White Jr. is a top-tier educator in the North Carolina school system, teaching fifth graders of Ashley Park Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. White earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Claflin University, and is a distinguished member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As an educator for the past three years, Mr. White has made it his mission to build relationships with students and create a family-oriented atmosphere, where students can be assured that their voice matters. He strives to inspire through innovative teaching practices, and by nurturing creativity amongst young scholars. Mr. White discovered that a practice he had implemented as a sign of trust between him and his students had gone viral. Mr. White’s increasing popularity stemmed from the recording, which depicted him giving personalized handshakes to each of his students, attracting attention all over the world. His purpose—to stress the importance of individuality and the positive impact that giving individualized attention to each student can have. Mr. White has been featured in the Charlotte Observer, highlighting his efforts as a co-founder for the Ashley Park Blue Wings Step Team aimed at increasing collegiate interest. He is a recipient of the North Carolina AT&T Heritage award and has made appearances on the Steve Harvey show, The Today’s show, Kevin hart’s TKO show and other national media outlets. It is his goal to create opportunities that will generate collegiate interests amongst students and propel them to strive for sights and adventures beyond their local surroundings. Barry White Jr. has been instrumental in youth empowerment, encouraging youth to utilize their platforms and gifts to motivate and inspire others. He believes in pushing children to be global leaders, fostering both global and cultural awareness. Mr. White aims to continue his career in educational leadership, with plans of becoming a school principal in the coming years. Barry has also founded an organization, the Barry White Jr. Foundation, where he will be a direct liaison for educators, providing tips on enhancing the learning experience for students, capitalizing on the various learning styles. Quotables I am always an advocate of teachers finding their voice and empowering others and themselves. My number one priority is building relationships. I needed them to understand the truth that I had their best interest at hand and really to buy in to me being their teacher. Once you have students, they are there. They will follow you to the end of a cliff if you need them to. That is how much they invest in you because they see that you are invested in them. Our students really need both the head work that we are providing with academics being both strategic and intentional but then the heart work as well that we are really pouring in and they see that this authentic investment. We genuinely care what happens next, that next day, the next moment and I think they sense that, they feed off of it and pour that right back into us which keeps the train kind of going. The ability to pause, reflect on, and adjust is the thing that I’ve seen the educators that I deem to be great do to be effective in the schools or do to be effective in leading people in general. You literally can just show up and be a passionate educator and that alone, that alone is going to have a magnifying impact throughout your entire building, not just your classroom. This isn’t the NBA, there isn’t just one MVP at the end of the year. You don’t get the MVP trophy, we are a community, we are here for what is best for students and we are empowering students when we reach out and say, “Hey, why don’t you try this.” Barry's Stamp of Approval Teach Your Heart Out Conference - https://www.teachyourheartoutcon.com/ Connect with Barry Instagram - @thatsbwhite Facebook - Barry White Jr Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/user/nupe11klub/videos Connect with Gretchen Email: [email protected] Blog: Always A Lesson Facebook: Always A Lesson Twitter: @gschultek Instagram: Always.A.Lesson Linkedin: Gretchen Schultek Bridgers Google+: Gretchen Schultek Bridgers Book: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn’t Teach You in College Shop AAL Swag https://alwaysalesson.com/product-category/swag/ Join the Always A Lesson Newsletter http://eepurl.com/lJKNn Coaching Call Grab a Spot on my Calendar here: https://square.site/book/FE6G600ZF0PPD/always-a-lesson Leave a Rating and Review: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/always-lessons-empowering/id1006433135?mt=2 Why? 203: 3 Focal Areas to Transform Your Teaching

When you first begin teaching, there are so many changes you want to make to your instructional practice. Knowing what tweaks to make and which ones to save for later can be a daunting task. This podcast episode will walk you through 3 focal areas of your instruction that will have the biggest impact on student achievement and your own teaching proficiency. This way you get more bang for your buck with every change you make.QuotablesStudent achievement and teacher proficiency are HUGE in how we measure our educational effectiveness. Some of these tasks are time sucks and they aren’t making us stronger and better for the kids we lead every single day in the classroom. What do you with the initial outline determines how effective in the classroom you will become. All the structures we put in place are going to be re-usable.I diminished their ability to make the choice for themselves.Instead of requiring kids to behave in a certain manner, I could set up the classroom in a way so that they could operate as independents while yet still adhering to requirements. All this foundational work you are doing will lead to you and students finding freedom in the classroom.Student engagement puts the power back into the students ‘hands and gives them unique opportunities to work with each other and the content to have a deeper understandingLinks: New Teacher Book: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn't Teach You in CollegeGrab a Slot on my CalendarLet’s chat about your currents and develop a plan. Tune in to hear about 3 pivotal moments in my educational career that acted as catapults into the next chapter of a bigger, better version of myself.Quotables:I realized there were a few chapters in my life that were cornerstones for my own development. I see them as dog eared pages in my life book. Chapters I want to go back to and remember the impact that it offered. You might feel stuck in your situation sometimes, but every day you can take action steps that will change the trajectory of your path even if by one degree. One thing every leader of mine knew is that I had a thirst to get better. I realized how important is was for me to get out of my environment. To see strong instruction from every perspective I could. Everyone has something to showcase and everyone has something to learn.Never before had I felt like I had such an impact on our future. We are stronger more brilliant together than alone. If I really want to have the impact I desire as an educator, I had to get serious about working on my craft. You hold the compass to the direction of your journey as an educatorWhen you prioritize your own development, you affect change in everyone else you lead.Links: Learning WalksCoaching CourseMastermind1:1 Coaching with MeNew Teacher Book: Elementary EDUC 101: What They Didn't Teach You in CollegeGrab a Slot on my CalendarLet’s chat about your currents and develop a plan. 196: How Do You Want To Be?

Teaching tiny humans is more than lesson plans with standards and objectives. Teaching is a way to help guide a young person along their learning path so that they discover their inner skills and talents, use their school knowledge to propel those gifts, and then go out into the world to leave their mark. As educators, how are we helping students discover how they want to inspire the world? Tune in to hear my teaching confession and action tips you can implement right now to do better for every kid in front of you. Quotables If you aren’t living your DREAM, how can you help kids discover and live out their own? The best thing we can do is model for our kids what we want them to do. It’s your job to help them discover what fire burns within them and help guide them to get a job that can help them leave their imprint on this world. I promise to do better so every kid knows it’s okay to not fit the mold, that the skills you learn in school can and will help you hone that craft, to support friends or foes who dream differently, and to go after your heart’s desires with gusto! It wasn’t until I started coaching other teachers that I noticed holes in my own practice But beyond that belief we have to act this out Being a teacher is more than the obvious…It’s helping kids realize what makes them special and helping them bring it to fruition.
