Alternate Ending - Movie Review Podcast

Zombie month has officially risen from the grave, and we're starting with a resolutely peculiar entry, the 2008 Canadian indie PONTYPOOL! Tim and Brennan break down whether or not the core conceit makes sense and if that matters, as well as discussing the subjectivity of horror and following up on a bit of tangential Elvira material! Between that and the gung-ho feature length military advertisement Top Gun: Maverick continuing its jaw-dropping run at the box office (and secondarily, US Independence Day), it seemed like a perfect time to take a look at the long history of movies designed in part, or in full, to celebrate the love of Queen and Country, give or take the Queen. We'll be bringing you our Top 5 patriotic movies, with celebrations of national pride from the U.S. and around the globe (Tim does love his Japanese WWII propaganda films), those films that make you want to stand up and sing the bits of the national anthem that you actually know the words to. Come wave a flag with us, we're not choosy about which one. Tune in! With Rob down for the count with COVID, Tim and Brennan nowhere to be found, Carrie turns to the only other cinephiles she knows...Abbi and Alice. Location, location location! It's not just for real estate. Locations play a critical role in the filmmaking process. Rob is back from another whirlwind trip to Ohio with Parker. Find out how each of the critical locations came together in this episode.

Crimes of Alternate Ending Well, it's not until this very moment that I'm realizing we blew right past the Worth Mentioning segment. We might have also skipped the Patreon shout-outs. It's possible that we zig-zagged our way around the Amazon reads, reviews aaaand pretty much any detail that required preparation. Why? Rob was out of the town this week and the every-5-year-disaster of Tim and I recording an episode alone, did happen. To add to the mayhem, we were joined by some of our favorite Patreon supporters to add to the chat and QA. We kick the episode off with a spoiler-free discussion of Crimes of the Future and then open it up to live QA. After the break, we dive deep into spoilers and clarifications on erectile stature that we hope either Rob edited out, or, that you've turned it out. Somehow. SOMEHOW.... we made it through, but we're sorry... and we hope to make it another 5 years before it happens again. It's summertime at the movies, and you know what that means: time for all the biggest sequels, brand extensions, spin-offs, and nostalgic cash grabs. In other words: movie franchises! The long awaited arrival of award winning filmmaker and director / writer producer of Hauntology, Parker Brennon , to the podcast has come! Parker joins Rob as they learn more about Parker's background in film, schooling and early work. They also discuss the launch of the Hauntology Kickstarter launching Wednesday, June 1st through Thursday, June 30th.

Top Gun: Maverick has us all in the clouds We haven't all been this high on a movie since Rob saw Mad Max Fury Road at the Music Box (deep pull joke, but I'm still going with it. IYKYK.). Gosh, sometimes it's just fun to agree. Full disclosure, we can't really contain ourselves and we go full-spoiler right out of the gate. Though, even after all the discussion, I can't really say any of it ruins the movie or gives anything away. Beautiful people, fast planes, Tom Cruise being a bada$$... it's all stuff you know. Truly, you have to see it to process it. In worth mentioning, Carrie shares the provocative details of Jackass Forever (must to the dismay of every listener), while Rob reviews the latest reimagining of the horror flick Wrong Turn and Tim weighs in on The Bob's Burgers Movie. Around the world, the box office charts are being dominated by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest example of Marvel Studios' habit of attempting to shake some of the dust off the formula of formulaic comic book superhero action movies by flavoring them with a little bit of genre. In this case, for the first time in Marvel's history, that genre flavoring is horror, and that's gotten us to thinking about all the other times a not-actually-horror movie got to play around in horror's sandbox. And that's gotten us to our next episode topic: the Top 5 Scary Movies That Aren't Horror. From childhood trauma where it frankly makes no sense to find it, up to movies that disquieted us powerfully as adults without it necessarily being clear why, we're looking for scares where you least expect it. With the arrival in theater of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next week, the first fully fleshed-out summer movie season since 2019 will be upon us. To celebrate, the Alternate Ending crew is looking ahead to the next four months of action epics, animated comedies, and the occasional art film from a major director. For our next episode, we offer a Summer 2023 Preview: the films we're excited about (and perhaps the ones we're especially dreading), the films we expect to be big hits or big flops! Plus... Don't forgot! Box Office Prediction Contest is OPEN! Part of the fun of summer is seeing what movies will rake in the biggest pile of money. So in addition to sharing your top 5 picks for what you're looking forward to for the episode, we're also inviting you to share your best guesses for what films are going to make the most money over the next few months. Oscars 2022 Reactions - compelling drama or dramatic disappointment? Well, I won't do what Rob does and crack a joke about starting the conversation with the most shocking thing from the 94th Academy Awards being: CODA winning best picture (ba-dum-ching and spoiler), but now 48 hours removed from the event, I think our brains would like to imagine that the actual film winners were the most compelling story. The Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, it's a catchphrase you've heard before. It's also a catchphrase that you assume has straightforward criteria. Movies critical to cinema? Movies about the afterlife? Movies to see if you have exactly 24 hours to live? If there is something we do well here at Alternate Ending, it's complicate things. So we do indeed come up with our Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, but it's a curvy path to get there. Tim also agrees that Carrie's list is the best, because he in fact, he would want to pass on after viewing her choices. In a new trend over the last few episodes, we've also been adding to the list of reasons of "why Rob Jarosinski is a sociopath" with a rousing story about public urination. This week's episode we dive into The Batman, Matt Reeves' grim reimagining of Mr. Bruce Wayne. As soon as we launched Pass the Popcorn, we knew at the top of our list was to have our old friend and roommate, Josh Elder. There are few people we know who are bigger fanatics of the comic-craft and we were really eager for his perspective. He's bringing his expertise on all things Gotham so we can get truly down and nerdy on Batman: Twilight Edition. (That is what this movie is called, right?) (Josh Elder donning the wrong shirt) There has been a longstanding war on who is the more knowledgeable human. Even if that war is only in Carrie's mind, this episode, we put it to rest with a bit of impromptu trivia (much to this dismay of everybody). Josh also graces us with some of his favorite memories of Rob as a young sociopath, which has us all in tears. In worth Mentioning, by Patron Jason Dohla's request, Carrie and Rob bring So I Married an Axe Murderer, which leads to a good 10 minutes of clarifying a very side characters name. Tim brings Tyler Perry's a Madea Homecoming. Josh joins in on the fun with a historical drama, Agora. We're coming up fast on The Batman, the latest film centered around pop culture's famous insanely rich business mogul, Bruce Wayne. I am given to understand he also dresses as a bat. But that's not what we're here for, we're here to take a deeper dive into the Waynes of the world, the ultimate winners of late capitalism: captains of industry, movers and shakers, power brokers, the people whose exact work is a little hard to pin down, exactly, but by golly it sure does seem to be lucrative. The pair break down the tragic backstory of the film and how that informs the project, as well as what works and (mostly) what doesn't. Is there a very long digression about biology? You'll just have to find out for yourself. Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! There are so many exciting parts of the our Oscar Nomination Reactions episode, the least exciting part being the Oscar nominees. Ha! This episode, we're joined by Alternate Ending contributors Mandy Albert and Chris Trengove, to share our reactions to the nominees and the biggest snubs. I had a feeling with this crew I might get a little lost in the shuffle of cinephile-speak. And that did happen. BUT! It was absolutely invigorating to see the group light up and commiserate on mutual film feelings, with some joy and a healthy dose of disdain. In other exciting news, the team also tried their hand at predicting the Oscars and we get a chance to talk about a bit of an unexpected upset, in their rate of success. If there was any doubt of how much fun we had, you can just take a look at Chris. This might have been when we were talking about House of Gucci. We hope you enjoy this extra special episode. We'd love to hear about your Oscar Nomination Reactions too, did we hit the mark? What did we miss? Did the Academy get it right? It's been yet another daunting week for our schedules. 5 minutes before recording we all looked upon each other with the same fatigued question - "remind me, what are we talking about today again?" **90 mins later** It's spit preferences, strategizing how to simplify dissertations, silicone education, new theme song reactions and god only knows what else. Oh, movies! This episode, Carrie and Rob bring Tampopo (by Patreon Travis N's request) and Temple of Doom. Tim brings Soldier of Orange (by Patreon Laurel & Michael's request). From there, we all take a deep dive into our thoughts on the newly released movie about a moon falling, Moonfall. Our Best Films of 2021 episode, was a bit contentious and so we had hoped to come back lovingly-aligned for our worst films of 2021 episode, but I guess there's always next time? It wasn't hard to find bad movies from the last year, there were some mega-stinkers, indeed. What qualifies as a bad movie? What elements of a movie make it bad? All things for which, we do not agree. I will say though, with our New Year's resolution to spark joy and find the positive, Rob makes a valiant attempt to have us find the "brightest spot" in each terrible movie and maybe, it sort of works? Also, please hide your Grandma's. Hide your Dad's. Maybe even hide yourself from this particularly vulgar and regularly offensive episode. They always just twist my... ugh... just sorry. Audience Top 5 - Worst Films of 2021 1. Space Jam: A New Legacy 2. Don't Look Up 3. Music 4. Mortal Kombat | Diana: The Musical 5. Cinderella | Dear Evan Hansen This week's winner - Chris Trengove! 1. Music 2. Cinderella 3. Space Jam: A New Legacy 4. Cherry 5. This week, Bride of Alternate Ending is double masked and taking to the aisles to discuss SCREAM 5 aka 5CREAM aka SCREAM for reasons that remain unfathomable. Will noted Scream skeptic Tim and Scream megafan Brennan (who recorded this entire podcast without telling Tim that theres a shiny new Scream '22 poster hanging on his wall just out of sight of the Zoom camera) find common ground on this new entry, the first to not be directed by Wes Craven?

It's a brand new year, and we couldn't be more excited to see what exciting new movies 2022 has lined up for us all to enjoy. But before we can do that, we need to ring out the old year in traditional fashion: our picks for the best films of 2021!

We're not 100% sure why, but you asked for it and we're here to cover TETSUO II: BODY HAMMER! The original film is an indelible work of experimental genius that we had wildly divergent opinions on. Can the same filmmaker apply that genius to a more coherent story and a bigger budget? Let's find out!

o close out our December slate of episodes, Tim and Brennan are sitting at a safe distance so they don't smack each other while discussing SCREAM, a massively influential Wes Craven classic that the two are extremely divided on. Will they find common ground? Only time (and listening to this episode) will tell.

Merry December, everyone! For our Patreon-voted Christmas episode, we're covering the late 80's not-quite-a-slasher ELVES! It's an action-horror thriller about Grizzly Adams as a mall Santa fighting Nazi elves, and he's not even the most fascinating character…

o good to be back this week, with our last Top 5 episode of 2021! As we celebrate the upcoming release of Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Nightmare Alley, we couldn't help but reflect on our favorite movie con artists. Fair warning, we had some pent up energy from missing each other the last few weeks, so please excuse the chaos (or at least we'll use that as an excuse). Audience Top 5 1. The Lady Eve 2. Paper Moon 3. The Talented Mr. Ripley 4. The Producers | The Sting 5. Catch Me If You Can | Parasite This week's winner - Rioghnach! ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! On our second belated November episode, we're covering Wes Craven's THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS in honor of its 20th anniversary! Brennan and Tim analyze where the film works and where it doesn't, as well as where it fits in the overall Craven canon.

This year's Oscar race is about to get dressy with House of Gucci, a true crime biopic about the legendary family-run fashion company. To celebrate, we're playing a bit of dress-up ourselves, as we take a look out favorite examples of costuming motion picture history. From the storybook past to the shiny future, costume design is one of the cornerstones of cinematic worldbuilding, and our next episode is entirely devoted to the most imaginative, most glamorous, and most colorful examples of big screen couture.

Brennan lost his voice and it took some time to find it again. This week, we're covering Patreon subscriber Carl Beasley's request of a film involving Terrors of the Deep. The poll results pointed in one mystifying direction: 1989's LEVIATHAN. In this episode, we plumb every corner of this deep sea flick that welds Alien to The Thing and calls it a day.

It's was a very long week for all of us, but nothing clears the mind like getting together to Pass the Popcorn about movies! This episode, Carrie talks us into a round of "The Movie Game," based on a recent surge of film knowledge confidence. It's doesn't go well. Rob brings the new Netflix original Red Notice, Carrie brings Home Sweet Home Alone and Tim shares his thoughts on Last Night in Soho. ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? At the request of Patreon subscriber Brian Fowler, and just in time for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson about to star in the Netflix action-comedy Red Notice, the Alternate Ending crew is going to tag team on an episode all about the colorful history of wrestlers who've wandered into the movie. Some have just showed up for a random movie or two, Roddy Piper; some have transformed into proper leading men like The Rock himself; some have become generation-defining legends and genres unto themselves, like El Santo. Any and all of might just show up on our episode dedicated to the top 5 performances by wrestlers in the movies. In Worth Mentioning, we review Sleuth, as requested by M.C. Steffen and commiserate about Dune, The Eternals and The French Dispatch. This week's Amazon rental giveaway winner was McAlister Grant! Audience Top 5: 1. Andre The Giant - The Princess Bride 2. Roddy Piper - The Live! 3. Dave Bautista - Guardians of the Galaxy 4. John Cena - Trainwreck & Harold Sakata - Goldfinger & Dwayne Johnson - Moana 5. Dwayne Johnson - Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! Other places to follow Alternate Ending. This time, it's Brennan's turn to gift Tim with a spooky movie HE hasn't seen! Continuing our accidental double feature of parents grieving the death of their young daughters, we're covering the George C. Scott haunted house film THE CHANGELING! Brennan also reports back on his read through of the Don't Look Now short story he promised to check out last time!
