EThanks to Patreon subscribers Laura and Chris Trengove, we're here this week talking about our Top 5 Chicago Movies (Not Named "Chicago")! As Chicago natives, we have big thoughts on what makes Chicago..ChiCAgo. From the food... to the food...and er... hotdogs? We also have thought on: Rob's new movie ventures, if it's ok to call your Daddy, Daddio, eating boogers and the tastiest variety of chizz. It's the most overlap we've had in years! Tune in and we hope you enjoy! S7 Ep 21Bride of AE - The Valley of Gwangi (1969)
EFor the second episode of Ray Harryhausen month (a topic requested by Patron Gavin McDowell), Tim and Brennan break down the 1969 film THE VALLEY OF GWANGI. The pair discuss its stop motion effects (naturally), how it functions within the realm of dinosaur pictures and Westerns, and where the hell this movie came from, a good 10 years after anyone would have wanted something like it. EThis week, Brennan, Carrie, and Mandy get together for a spicy game of movie-themed Never Have I Ever! But first, in Worth Mentioning, Brennan discusses the bonkers kaleidoscope of Daniels' Everything Everywhere All At Once, Carrie breaks down the cannibalistic horror comedy Fresh, and Mandy waxes nostalgic about Richard Linklater's Apollo 10 1/2. S7 Ep 19Top 5 Movies I'm Ashamed I Haven't Seen
EThanks to Patreon subscriber Andrew Milne we're here this week talking about our Top Movies I'm Ashamed I haven't seen. Some, we're embarrassed about and others we've just downright lied to people and said we've seen (only Tim, only Tim would do that). Either way, we bare all on this super fun episode, designed especially to fling ourselves under the bus. The extra bonus is that Tim arbitrarily has committed to righting the wrongs of the unseen films on his list, so yay for #5! Tune in and we hope you have a great week! EBrand new month, brand new topic! Patron Gavin McDowell asked us to cover the films of Ray Harryhausen and the people voted for his 1957 effort 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH! Tim and Brennan break down the breathtaking special effects used to create the Ymir, the way the Italian setting makes some of the 50's boilerplate more tolerable, and Brennan tries to impress his friend Hunter by referencing as many other B-movies as possible. S7 Ep 17Pass the Popcorn: Oscars 2022 Reactions
EOscars 2022 Reactions - compelling drama or dramatic disappointment? Well, I won't do what Rob does and crack a joke about starting the conversation with the most shocking thing from the 94th Academy Awards being: CODA winning best picture (ba-dum-ching and spoiler), but now 48 hours removed from the event, I think our brains would like to imagine that the actual film winners were the most compelling story. This episode we're joined by some of our favorite people to do a little round table of our Oscars 2022 reactions! You may remember this crew from our 94th Oscar nomination reaction episode, so prepare for snappy-takes and the comfort that can only come from like-minded cinephiles (and me). Topics Discussed: CODA winning best picture Liza Minnelli taking the stage Our reactions to verbal attacks on our loved ones Did the In Memoriam meet the bar? Best speeches Best presenters Best dressed (obviously) Anticipatory nip-slips There's a bit of consensus, a bit of contained rage towards me and a lot of fun as we work our way through the run of show. EThis week we're continuing to dig the skeletons out of the closets of people nominated for Oscars in 2022, and we're moving on to Best Actress nominee Kristen Stewart's early role in THE MESSENGERS! S7 Ep 15Top 5 Best Picture Winners
EWith special thanks to Patreon supporter Brian Fowler, we bring you our Top 5 Best Picture Winners, just in time for the 94th Academy Awards. I don't know if it should make us feel better or worse, that this podcast is aging in reverse. What does that even mean? You'd think after all these years and with us slowly creeping into our 40's, you'd begin to feel that tug of maturity. Yet, here we are, another episode, another 15 minute discussion about s*x and cheese. And s*x with cheese. And... well, some things can't be unheard. Tune in and as always, we hope you enjoy! S7 Ep 14Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die
EThe Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, it's a catchphrase you've heard before. It's also a catchphrase that you assume has straightforward criteria. Movies critical to cinema? Movies about the afterlife? Movies to see if you have exactly 24 hours to live? If there is something we do well here at Alternate Ending, it's complicate things. So we do indeed come up with our Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, but it's a curvy path to get there. Tim also agrees that Carrie's list is the best, because he in fact, he would want to pass on after viewing her choices. In a new trend over the last few episodes, we've also been adding to the list of reasons of "why Rob Jarosinski is a sociopath" with a rousing story about public urination. Behind the scenes, Rob explains that he was comfortable sharing the story because quote "everybody has done it," to which, we will let you respond to the accuracy of that statement. As always, tune in, and we hope you enjoy! S7 Ep 13Bride of AE - War of the Worlds (2005)
EThis month we're digging the skeletons out of the closets of people nominated for Oscars in 2022, and we're starting by discussing Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS! Tim and Brennan sit down to discuss whether or not the film really qualifies as "horror," their relationship to the copious 9/11 imagery, how Tom Cruise services the movie or not, and much much more! S7 Ep 12Pass the Popcorn: THE BATMAN w. Guest Josh Elder
EThis week's episode we dive into The Batman, Matt Reeves' grim reimagining of Mr. Bruce Wayne. As soon as we launched Pass the Popcorn, we knew at the top of our list was to have our old friend and roommate, Josh Elder. There are few people we know who are bigger fanatics of the comic-craft and we were really eager for his perspective. He's bringing his expertise on all things Gotham so we can get truly down and nerdy on Batman: Twilight Edition. (That is what this movie is called, right?) (Josh Elder donning the wrong shirt) There has been a longstanding war on who is the more knowledgeable human. Even if that war is only in Carrie's mind, this episode, we put it to rest with a bit of impromptu trivia (much to this dismay of everybody). Josh also graces us with some of his favorite memories of Rob as a young sociopath, which has us all in tears. In worth Mentioning, by Patron Jason Dohla's request, Carrie and Rob bring So I Married an Axe Murderer, which leads to a good 10 minutes of clarifying a very side characters name. Tim brings Tyler Perry's a Madea Homecoming. Josh joins in on the fun with a historical drama, Agora. We have a spoiler-free discussion about our likes and gripes of The Batman before we give you a very clear heads-up as we veer into spoiler territory. S7 Ep 11Top 5 Moguls
EWe're coming up fast on The Batman, the latest film centered around pop culture's famous insanely rich business mogul, Bruce Wayne. I am given to understand he also dresses as a bat. But that's not what we're here for, we're here to take a deeper dive into the Waynes of the world, the ultimate winners of late capitalism: captains of industry, movers and shakers, power brokers, the people whose exact work is a little hard to pin down, exactly, but by golly it sure does seem to be lucrative. In short, we're looking at our top 5 moguls in the movies (though not our top 5 movie moguls), to see just what it is they do with all that money and power. Besides dressing up as bats, that is. The episode gets a little off the rails. If we had known the direction it was heading, we would have included a whole other list of criteria above for what qualifies as a "mogul," but I guess you've come to expect that now. Tune in and we hope you enjoy! S7 Ep 10Bride of AE - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
EWe're still covering multi-part sequels thanks to a request from Patreon member Brian Fowler! Today we're talking about Netflix's new film TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, which is the ninth Texas Chainsaw film, the third film with that basic title, the third or fourth film to position itself as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, and the first film where Leatherface is put on Instagram Live. In between digressions, we try to break down what on Earth is going on with the bizarre group of hipsters at the center of the film, share our assessment of the kills, and break down the return of the legendary Sally Hardesty! S7 Ep 8Top 5 Movie Endings
EHappy Valentine's Day, to the subsection of you that don't despise it. Though, I guess I don't care either way because I'm still going to send you a virtual hug and you're gonna like it! OO This episode comes courtesy of Patreon subscriber Jack Chivers, who's asked us to carefully select and discuss our top 5 movie endings. As you can imagine, our opinions on what makes a story complete, vary greatly (don't be deceived by a bit of overlap). The episode might feel a bit chaotic, as our recollections of the actual endings of movies...differ. The mind is a funny thing and it has an interesting way of seeing what it hopes to see, I guess. S7 Ep 7Bride of AE - Poltergeist III (1988)
EThis month, Bride of Alternate Ending is covering multi-part sequels thanks to a request from Patreon member Brian Fowler! The people have spoken, and they have chosen for Tim and Brennan to discuss 1988's POLTERGEIST III! The pair break down the tragic backstory of the film and how that informs the project, as well as what works and (mostly) what doesn't. Is there a very long digression about biology? S7 Ep 6Pass the Popcorn: 94th Oscar Nomination Reactions
EThere are so many exciting parts of the our Oscar Nomination Reactions episode, the least exciting part being the Oscar nominees. Ha! This episode, we're joined by Alternate Ending contributors Mandy Albert and Chris Trengove, to share our reactions to the nominees and the biggest snubs. I had a feeling with this crew I might get a little lost in the shuffle of cinephile-speak. And that did happen. BUT! It was absolutely invigorating to see the group light up and commiserate on mutual film feelings, with some joy and a healthy dose of disdain. In other exciting news, the team also tried their hand at predicting the Oscars and we get a chance to talk about a bit of an unexpected upset, in their rate of success. If there was any doubt of how much fun we had, you can just take a look at Chris. This might have been when we were talking about House of Gucci. We hope you enjoy this extra special episode. S7 Ep 5Pass the Popcorn: Moonfall | Tampopo | Soldier of Orange
EIt's been yet another daunting week for our schedules. 5 minutes before recording we all looked upon each other with the same fatigued question - "remind me, what are we talking about today again?" **90 mins later** It's spit preferences, strategizing how to simplify dissertations, silicone education, new theme song reactions and god only knows what else. Oh, movies! This episode, Carrie and Rob bring Tampopo (by Patreon Travis N's request) and Temple of Doom. Tim brings Soldier of Orange (by Patreon Laurel & Michael's request). From there, we all take a deep dive into our thoughts on the newly released movie about a moon falling, Moonfall. S7 Ep 4Worst Films of 2021
EOur Best Films of 2021 episode, was a bit contentious and so we had hoped to come back lovingly-aligned for our worst films of 2021 episode, but I guess there's always next time? It wasn't hard to find bad movies from the last year, there were some mega-stinkers, indeed. What qualifies as a bad movie? What elements of a movie make it bad? All things for which, we do not agree. I will say though, with our New Year's resolution to spark joy and find the positive, Rob makes a valiant attempt to have us find the "brightest spot" in each terrible movie and maybe, it sort of works? Also, please hide your Grandma's. Hide your Dad's. Maybe even hide yourself from this particularly vulgar and regularly offensive episode. They always just twist my... ugh... just sorry. Audience Top 5 - Worst Films of 2021 1. Space Jam: A New Legacy 2. Don't Look Up 3. Music 4. Mortal Kombat | Diana: The Musical 5. S7 Ep 3Bride of AE - Scream (2022)
EThis week, Bride of Alternate Ending is double masked and taking to the aisles to discuss SCREAM 5 aka 5CREAM aka SCREAM for reasons that remain unfathomable. Will noted Scream skeptic Tim and Scream megafan Brennan (who recorded this entire podcast without telling Tim that theres a shiny new Scream '22 poster hanging on his wall just out of sight of the Zoom camera) find common ground on this new entry, the first to not be directed by Wes Craven?
S7 Ep 2Best Films of 2021
EIt's a brand new year, and we couldn't be more excited to see what exciting new movies 2022 has lined up for us all to enjoy. But before we can do that, we need to ring out the old year in traditional fashion: our picks for the best films of 2021!
S7 Ep 1Bride of AE - Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992)
EWe're not 100% sure why, but you asked for it and we're here to cover TETSUO II: BODY HAMMER! The original film is an indelible work of experimental genius that we had wildly divergent opinions on. Can the same filmmaker apply that genius to a more coherent story and a bigger budget? Let's find out!
S6 Ep 34Bride of AE - Scream (1996)
Eo close out our December slate of episodes, Tim and Brennan are sitting at a safe distance so they don't smack each other while discussing SCREAM, a massively influential Wes Craven classic that the two are extremely divided on. Will they find common ground? Only time (and listening to this episode) will tell.
S6 Ep 33Bride of AE - Elves (1989)
EMerry December, everyone! For our Patreon-voted Christmas episode, we're covering the late 80's not-quite-a-slasher ELVES! It's an action-horror thriller about Grizzly Adams as a mall Santa fighting Nazi elves, and he's not even the most fascinating character…
S6 Ep 32Top 5 Con Artists
Eo good to be back this week, with our last Top 5 episode of 2021! As we celebrate the upcoming release of Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Nightmare Alley, we couldn't help but reflect on our favorite movie con artists. Fair warning, we had some pent up energy from missing each other the last few weeks, so please excuse the chaos (or at least we'll use that as an excuse). Audience Top 5 1. The Lady Eve 2. Paper Moon 3. The Talented Mr. Ripley 4. The Producers | The Sting 5. S6 Ep 31Bride of AE - The People Under the Stairs (1991)
EOn our second belated November episode, we're covering Wes Craven's THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS in honor of its 20th anniversary! Brennan and Tim analyze where the film works and where it doesn't, as well as where it fits in the overall Craven canon.
S6 Ep 30Top 5 Costume-Designed Movies
EThis year's Oscar race is about to get dressy with House of Gucci, a true crime biopic about the legendary family-run fashion company. To celebrate, we're playing a bit of dress-up ourselves, as we take a look out favorite examples of costuming motion picture history. From the storybook past to the shiny future, costume design is one of the cornerstones of cinematic worldbuilding, and our next episode is entirely devoted to the most imaginative, most glamorous, and most colorful examples of big screen couture.
S6 Ep 29Bride of AE - Leviathan (1989)
EBrennan lost his voice and it took some time to find it again. This week, we're covering Patreon subscriber Carl Beasley's request of a film involving Terrors of the Deep. The poll results pointed in one mystifying direction: 1989's LEVIATHAN. In this episode, we plumb every corner of this deep sea flick that welds Alien to The Thing and calls it a day.
S6 Ep 28Pass the Popcorn: Red Notice | Last Night in Soho
EIt's was a very long week for all of us, but nothing clears the mind like getting together to Pass the Popcorn about movies! This episode, Carrie talks us into a round of "The Movie Game," based on a recent surge of film knowledge confidence. It's doesn't go well. Some have just showed up for a random movie or two, Roddy Piper; some have transformed into proper leading men like The Rock himself; some have become generation-defining legends and genres unto themselves, like El Santo. Any and all of might just show up on our episode dedicated to the top 5 performances by wrestlers in the movies. In Worth Mentioning, we review Sleuth, as requested by M.C. S6 Ep 25Top 5 Vampire Movies
EIt's spooky movie season once again, and we're celebrating with a concentrated dose of one of the most iconic monsters in cinema history. This episode focuses on our picks for the top 5 vampire movies, a noble lineage stretching back to the legendary days of German silent cinema all the way to the present day, and beyond. They might be animalistic ghouls, dangerously charismatic noblemen, or goofy cartoon dads: if they rise from the grave to feed on the energies of the living - or at least think they do - they might be coming along to scare us silly during this episode. To help you sort through it all, the Alternate Ending crew is here with our most anticipated movies of fall 2021, the popcorn giant and little arthouse releases alike that we're most eager to see between now and the bitter snows of winter.
S6 Ep 19Pass The Popcorn: Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings // Don't Breathe 2 // Vacation Friends
EIt's our inaugural episode of Pass The Popcorn and we while we have many directions we want to take this new format, we just had to review Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, given our respective obsessions with Marvel, Simu Liu and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, we just had to get this movie out of our system. We've had an eventful last few weeks with COVID super-spreader events, anniversaries and phallic gift deliveries and of course, you know we love to tell you all about those gory details. In worth mentioning Tim and Carrie commiserate about Don't Breathe 2 and Rob tries to sell the new Hulu release Vacation Friends (unsuccessfully). Tune in! S6 Ep 18Top 5 Conspiracy Thrillers
EWe've got another podcast by request of one of our Patreon subscribers, with Hallvar∂ur asking us to take a look at the dark and paranoid world of shadow governments and secret societies with our top 5 conspiracy thrillers. Stories of hapless, helpless protagonists stumbling into serpentine mazes of amoral men in shadowy rooms pulling strings to guide the course of the world to God knows what end were at their peak in popularity in the 1970s, but they existed before then and continue to exist as long as there's an irresistible tug to the feeling, as you look around the world, that things just aren't... quite... right. In Worth Mentioning, Tim covers Paw Patrol: The Movie, Carrie catches The Jungle Cruise at the drive-in and Rob continues Phase 1 of the MCU with his kids.
S6 Ep 17Top 5 Short Films // Free Guy // Annette // Pink Flamingos // Guess Who's Coming To Dinner // Iron Man
EOur next episode comes at the request of Patreon subscriber Travis, who wants us to think small: we're temporarily putting aside feature-length movies to share with all of you our top 5 short films of all time. From slapstick cartoons to documentaries to the wilderness of the avant-garde, the world of short cinema is every bit as varied as its more visible long-form sibling, and we're going to look into every corner of that world for our favorite proofs that it's not about size, but about what you do with it. In Worth Mentioning Carrie and Rob review Patreon supporter Ann Yourell's pick - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? and Rob shares his premature introduction of the Marvel series with his young children. Meanwhile, Tim reviews Palme D'or supporter, Travis's pick, Pink Flamingos with additional reviews of Free Guy and Annette.
S6 Ep 16Top 5 Ensembles // Jungle Cruise // The Craft: Legacy // The Saragossa Manuscript
EIn hardly any time at all, we're going to be getting DC's The Suicide Squad, a reboot-sequel that surely somebody anywhere in the whole world was clamoring for. In the meantime, this story of a bunch of colorful weirdoes played by a star-studded cast has us thinking of all the other times that movies have given us a chance to gawk at all our favorite actors gathered in one place, or just to be suitably bowled over by the sheer quantity of acting talent. We're taking a look at our Top 5 ensembles in film history, that is to say, from the messy sprawl of Altman to the all-hands-on-deck cross-promotion of the MCU. In Worth Mentioning we cover Jungle Cruise, The Craft: Legacy and The Saragossa Manuscript thanks to Patreon, Gavin!
Bride of AE: TETSUO: THE IRON MAN (1989)
bonusEThis month on Bride of Alternate Ending, Tim and Brennan are covering the 1989 experimental body horror masterpiece(?) TETSUO: THE IRON MAN! Thank you so much for being a patron!
S6 Ep 15Escape Room 2 with The Game Master // Black Widow // Space Jame: A New Legacy // Pig
EWith Escape Room Tournament of Champions hitting theaters this week, we decided to mix it this episode up a bit. You see, your respective hosts each have an unfounded confidence that they are, in fact, the most talented Escape Room-ers, that probably ever existed. I say this because, JUST last weekend, the AE crew traveled to Escape in Time - Madison to test our wits in their new Cryosleep room. The short story is, we only used one clue and made it out of the room with 20 whole minutes to spare and basically we all think we own the place now. That said, the experience left us with lots of questions. Rob: "How much of the experience is automated vs. managed by the Gamemaster's manual control?" Carrie: "What's the weirdest thing you've seen on the hidden cameras?" Tim: "Do you give discounts for superior human beings, who are able to navigate complicated clues more quickly than anybody you've ever seen?" So for this episode, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Sara and Cheris the owner and Gamemaster at Escape in Time - Madison, to find out from the experts how Escape Room Tournament of Champions stacks up AND to ask the obvious question "which of us really was the best player"? Note: this is an "Spoiler Free" episode, but expect a series of grunts and moans and "mmmhmmmms" as we try to have a knowing conversation, void of explaining any of the twists. In worth mentioning, Carrie and Tim commiserate on Black Widow, Rob takes on the task or reviewing Space Jam: A New Legacy and Tim reviews the new Nic Cage flick, Pig (which he kind of loved, to the surprise of nobody). Tune in and we hope you enjoy this fun episode! ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! Other places to follow Alternate Ending. S6 Ep 14Top 5 Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies
EBlack Widow is coming to theaters next week, and with it, a nearly two-year drought in the theatrical output of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to a close (I mean, come now... they don't call it the Marvel Direct-to-Streaming Television Universe, now do they). And with 23 extant films making up this biggest and baddest franchise of modern filmmaking, that's more than enough for us to make our comparative lists of the top 5 MCU movies. For some of us, this means the cream of the crop of modern blockbuster filmmaking; for others, it's the most tolerable of a bad bunch. But anyway, Tim felt like he owed something to Rob and Carrie for muscling through Studio Ghibli week, so here we are. In Worth Mentioning we discuss The Tomorrow War, No Sudden Moves, Fatherhood and Pride thanks to Patron Ellie Cook.
Bride of AE: Videodrome (1983)
bonusEThis month on Bride of Alternate Ending, thanks to Patreon subscriber Travis, Tim and Brennan are covering the David Cronenberg classic VIDEODROME! Thank you so much for being a patron!
Take 2: Ponyo (2008)
bonusEThis week on Take 2, Carrie joins Brennan to discuss her official number 1 favorite Studio Ghibli film, PONYO, and how it got that way.
S6 Ep 13Top 5 Studio Ghibli Films
EOne-third of the Alternate Ending team couldn't possibly be more excited for our next topic, which has been gifted to us from Patreon subscriber Gavin. And since he's the one writing this post, there's not going to be any dissenting views on the idea that Japan's Studio Ghibli is one of the most wonderful, special, spirit-lifting film production companies in the history of the medium (we'll agree to pretend that Miyazaki Goro never tried to follow in dad's footsteps). And thanks to Gavin's generosity, we get to spend an entire episode in rapturous joy that we get to discuss our top 5 Studio Ghibli films! From totoros to tanuki, we'll be celebrating all of the blissful wonders that Studio Ghibli has to offer In Worth Mentioning we cover Luca, In the Heights and The Last Laugh, thanks to Patreon Space Ice.
Take 2: Love, Simon (2018)
bonusEThis week on Take 2, Carrie joins Brennan to nominally discuss 2018's Love, Simon although it's mainly just tangents about coming out, improving the world, and swallowing.
S6 Ep 12Top 5 Movies for Parents
EOur next podcast topic comes to us thanks to Patreon subscriber Not Fenimore, who has left us with an intriguingly open-ended topic: our top 5 movies for parents. Whether this means the top 5 movies for parents who have been conscripted into watching movies with their kids, the top 5 movies for parents to use as teachable moments about life or morality or such things, the top 5 movies for parents to learn how to handle their children, or something else entirely, has been left as an exercise for the list-maker. Tune in next Monday to find out how the three of us all defined that phrase, and learn what two people who are themselves parents, as well as one avowed child-hater, think makes for good parenting media. In Worth Mentioning, we cover A Quiet Place, Part II, Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Paper Tigers.
Take 2: The Conjuring Films
bonusEThis week on Take 2, Tim joins Brennan to break down everything Conjuring, Annabelle, Nun, Llorona, and whatever the hell else James Wan and company throw at the wall to see if it sticks! Join us for our ranking of all 9 films, the struggle to figure out the series timeline, and the Greatest Showmanization of Ed and Lorraine Warren!
