S2021 Ep 44All Things Basketball with GD - Week 15, All Star Reserves and Rising Stars Reaction

All Star reserves reaction/Rising Stars thoughts (00:42)East:Jimmy Butler (MIA), Darius Garland (CLE), James Harden (BKN), Zach LaVine (CHI), Khris Middleton (MIL), Jayson Tatum (BOS), Fred VanVleet (TOR)West:Devin Booker (PHO), Chris Paul (PHO), Luka Doncic (DAL), Rudy Gobert (UTA), Donovan Mitchell (UTA), Karl Anthony Towns (MIN), Draymond Green (GSW)Actually Draymond may not play so they'll have to pick a replacement playerAmong four guys: Dejounte Murray (SAS), Anthony Edwards (MIN), Jaren Jackson Jr (MEM), Desmond Bane (MEM)Outside of that, I got 6 out of 7 picks for the WestThe biggest snubs to me in the East was Jaylen Brown (BOS) & Jarrett Allen (CLE)There's still a possibility for either guy to make it with Kevin Durant likely to be replaced since he's injuredAnother under the radar snub to me was Pascal Siakam (TOR) who's playing great even in light of OG Anunoby improving & rookie Scottie Barnes playing wellOverall I got 5 of 7 picks for the EastKudos to the East coaches for not picking a guy like Kyrie Irving given his small body of work & the circumstances of him playing part-timeKudos to the West coaches for not choosing Anthony Davis who's been hurt most of the 1st half of the season & Russell Westbrook who's having a down yearFor the Rising Stars Challenge, they've changed the format to a round robin of 4 teams with 7 guys on each rosterConsists of 12 rookies, 12 sophomores & 4 G-LeaguersHere's the list of players...Rookies:Scottie Barnes (TOR), Cade Cunningham (DET), Ayo Dosunmu (CHI), Chris Duarte (IND), Jalen Green (HOU), Josh Giddey (OKC), Herbert Jones (NOP), Davion Mitchell (SAC), Evan Mobley (CLE), Alperen Sengun (HOU), Jalen Suggs (ORL), Franz Wagner (ORL)Sophs:Precious Achiuwa (TOR), Cole Anthony (ORL), LaMelo Ball (CHA), Desmond Bane (MEM), Saddiq Bey (DET), Anthony Edwards (MIN), Tyrese Haliburton (SAC), Tyrese Maxey (PHI), Jaden McDaniels (MIN), Isaac Okoro (CLE), Isaiah Stewart (DET), Jae'Sean Tate (HOU)G League:MarJon Beauchamp, Dyson Daniels, Jaden Hardy, Scoot HendersonSo the question was asked: why isn't there any NYK players on either list? The talk around the league is about all the young talent they haveBottom line: Tom Thibodeau's coaching style doesn't lend itself to leaning heavily on his rookies & sophsWould have loved to see Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin or Immanuel Quickley there, but they aren't getting the consistent minutes that allow them to shineThe only player we'll likely see that weekend is Toppin in the Dunk Contest (hopefully he doesn't get robbed again)Nonetheless I'm interested in seeing this new format & how it shakes out

S2021 Ep 19All Things Basketball with GD - NBA Top 75 List, the Last 26

NBA's Top 75 list, the last 26 players (00:35)Show notes:The NBA took the top 50 & added 26 players (with a tie between 2 players) which makes up the top 75So therefore we won't have the luxury of removing the likes of a Bill Walton, Paul Arizin or Dolph Schayes for exampleThe NBA's thinking: if they're on the original top 50 they'll remain on the listSo we will talk about those last 26 players who made the listStarting off with the NBA righting a wrong from the previous top 50 by adding Dominique Wilkins & Bob McAdoo to the top 75As for those remaining 24 players we'll highlight a few guys from the listNo-brainers: the late great Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Russell Westbrook & Gary PaytonSo let's discuss the other guys on this list:Ray Allen. part of that great 1996 draft class, started with MIL, SEA, BOS as part of the Big 3 with Garnett & Paul Pierce, & then with MIA winning 2 titles in his careerAllen, coming out of UConn, still stands as the all time leader in 3 point goals made & so therefore I say he belongs on the listGiannis Antetokounmpo from MIL is the youngest players on the list & yet one of the most accomplished players nonethelessCarmelo Anthony, the scoring extraordinaire from the great 2003 draft, by my estimation I guess he should be on the listExcuse my omission, but Steph Curry is a no-brainer that should be on the list given his accoladesAnthony Davis is an interesting case study in terms of guys on the list: not all that accomplished while with NOP but yet thanks to him being a Laker & winning a title I think that pushes him over the edge to make the listJames Harden is someone, based on the numbers & accomplishments, who should make it onto the listKawhi Leonard is another person who certainly has the credentials, which includes 2 titles & 2 Finals MVPs in his coffers, for making this list despite his balky kneesThe choice of Damian Lillard is the stunner for me; not much on the resume especially in terms of postseason successAnother stunner: Reggie Miller; he's all over the TV now with TNT & NBA TV, but he was never a regular season stalwart (18 seasons with only 5 All Star appearances & only 3 time ALL-NBA)Miller did most of his damage in postseason but not to the tune of winning a title so yes he comes up short in my estimation of being worthy of having a place on this listSteve Nash, another player from that awesome 1996 draft class, also was in the league for 18 seasons but was way more accomplished than the aforementioned Miller & is more deserving of making the listFolks like to throw shade at Nash for winning the MVP in 2004-05 narrowly beating out Shaquille O'Neal, but he came back that following year to win it againPaul Pierce, a player I have no love for, got his championship thanks to the arrival of Garnett & Allen to BOS; I will say him winning the Finals MVP probably places him on this listDennis Rodman is being debated in terms of him deserving to be on the listRodman was a rebounding extraordinaire (led the league 7 times) given his size & a defensive stalwart (8 times All-Defense) who I feel has a rightful place on this listSo in conclusion, my 2 definite questionable additions are Damian Lillard & Reggie Miller while my 2 that we can debate about is Paul Pierce & Anthony Davis

S2021 Ep 15All Things Basketball with GD - Fantasy Basketball 101

The All Things Basketball podcast with GD - Fantasy Basketball 101Show NotesFantasy basketball 101 (00:31)Types of leagues (ESPN/Yahoo Fantasy)1) H2H (Head to Head) Each Category - most popular; who has the highest amount in each category (basic: scoring, FG%, FT%, 3PG made, rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots)Other categories used: turnovers, FGs made, FTs made, 3PG%, assist/turnover ratio, double-doubles, triple-doubles, etc.Season long with playoffs2) H2H Points - becoming more popular especially in ESPN leagues; each category based on a point system; whoever has the highest amount of points in the categories for the league wins; each category given different point values (turnovers usually assigned negative point value)Season long with playoffs3) H2H Most Categories - whoever wins the greater amount of categories is given a win; you are awarded a tie if the league has an even amount of categories & both you & your opponent has the equal amount of categories wonSeason long with playoffs4) Total points (Season) - points are given for each category much like H2H points but only difference is the points accumulate as the season goes along; no H2H matchups each weekNo playoffs (the person with the highest point totals by season's end wins the league)5) Roto (Rotisserie) - the common way to play early in the existence of fantasy basketball; whoever with the highest total in each category is ranked according to the league size (i.e. 10 pts per category for 1st place in a particular category per a 10 team league); no H2H matchupsNo playoffs (the person with the highest point totals across the board wins the league)Daily lineup changes vs. weekly lineup changesYou can either change your lineup daily or weekly according to the league you joinLeague sizeCan start as low as 4 in customizable leagues; 8 in public leagues (Yahoo)My suggestion for those new to fantasy: 8 team leaguesKey fact: the bigger the league, the more players you have to know aboutKeeper leagues - leagues that require a long term commitment & by season's end you are allowed to retain an allotted number of players for the following seasonDraft types1) Snake draft - draft that goes down the line in one round (i.e. 1-10) but reverses the order in the following round (i.e. 10-1)2) Aucti0n (salary cap) draft - each league manager is given a set budget then players are bidded on & awarded to the highest bidder (not too familiar with this type of draft)Where to join1) ESPN Fantasy (roster: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, G, F, 3 UTIL, 3 BN - 13 players)Experience: beginner or proScoring: H2H each cat, H2H most cat, H2H points, season points or rotoDraft type: snake or salary capDraft date & time: can only choose from now up to 6 days in advance2) Yahoo Fantasy (roster: PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, 3 UTIL, 3 BN - 13 players)Public or privatePublic - standard league (12 teams, H2H each cat or roto, snake or salary cap draft); prize leagues starting at $5Private (the most customizable) - more options for league size and scoringFree or prize leaguesAll 5 league types availableDraft types: live snake, live salary cap, autopick or offline

S2021 Ep 1All Things Basketball with GD - Origin & Olympics Gold edition

The All Things Basketball with GD podcast - the origin & Olympic Gold editionShow NotesOrigin (00:28) :A span of 40 years of following the NBA inspired by my dad as well as my uncles growing up. My favorite team was (and still is) the Knicks. Saw the metamorphosis of the league from a tape delay product to the Magic & Bird era to the MJ era to the Shaq & Kobe era to the SA Spurs dynasty of sorts to the LeBron era. My passion for fantasy basketball came in 2012 through the influence of my late co-worker Lonnie Gellman who played in a long running fantasy basketball league. Been involved in leagues ever since.Olympics mens basketball (03:18)Despite losing 2 exhibition games & the opening game of the Olympics, the mens team seized their 4th straight gold medal in Japan's Olympics triumphing over France, 87-82. The team was led by Kevin Durant (29 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists with a block) and Jayson Tatum (19 points, 7 rebounds with a steal) as well as Bam Adebayo's activity of the defensive end (5 defensive rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal) and Jrue Holiday's stellar defense on Evan Fournier. Fournier did lead France in scoring along with Rudy Gobert (16 points). Fournier only shot 5-15 FG% (2-9 from 3 point range). Coach Greg Popovich did a masterful job allowing to Gobert to find his offense as he wasn't a defensive presence inside like he normally is.Olympics womens basketball (10:58):The US womens team wins their 7th straight gold medal marking back to 1996. The team was led by Brittany Griner, A'ja Wilson & Breanna Stewart - the most formidable front line in the Olympics. Sue Bird & Diana Taurasi walked away with their unprecedented 5th gold medal, the most among both men & women hoopers. Coach Dawn Staley also will walk away from coaching the women. She herself has been affiliated as either a player or coach with those 7 straight gold medals. And kudos to Japan who as the host team received a silver medal.
