This week I'm reading from Becky Ferreira's book 'First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens' A narrative and visual exploration of humanity’s age-old search for and fixation with extraterrestrials. First Contact explores the ancient idea—and epic quest to prove—that we are not alone in the universe. This week I'm talking to Allan Lavigne about his UFO experiences. Bio Allan Lavigne is a former investigator for the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization from 1974-1980. He went on to a two-pronged career path spanning more than 45 years, as both a Physical Security Specialist and Intelligence Analyst in the private sector, working closely with the Joint Terrorist Task Force, FBI and Homeland Security. He is also an entertainment artist. His early work can be seen in the 1979 documentary UFOs are Real for which A.P.R.O. was the sole technical advisor. Allan went on to create Make-up Special Effects appliances, masks, and props for NBC’s Jack Web's TV series Project UFO for two seasons. He won the DC Comics Industry Award for his Arkham Asylum Batman costume. In this episode, I talk about one of Britain’s most fascinating UFO mysteries: the Berwyn Mountains UFO incident of 23 January 1974, often called the Welsh Roswell. On a cold winter night in North Wales, residents near Llandrillo and Bala reported a huge bang, a tremor, and strange lights over the Berwyn range. But what makes the case so compelling is what some witnesses said they saw on the mountain itself. I explore the reports of a bright red light on the hillside, described by witnesses as “coal-fire red,” a “large perfect circle,” and “like a big bonfire.” Some accounts also spoke of white lights moving nearby and of the glow changing in intensity and colour. District nurse Pat Evans is closely associated with seeing a large glowing object on the mountain after driving toward the scene, believing there had been a crash. Other witnesses described the area as pulsating with strange light, adding to the enduring mystery of what happened in the Berwyns that night. Was it a crashed UFO? A military recovery? Or something even stranger? In this episode, I focus on the witness testimony, the atmosphere of the night, and why the Berwyn Mountains incident remains a fascinating case in UK UFO history. It was also a unique military-related event, having taken place in Rendlesham Forest just outside the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England – both of which had been transferred to the United States Air Force in 1951 by the British MOD (Ministry of Defence), becoming one of the largest and most important NATO complexes in Europe during the Cold War. The account given in this book is that of James W. Penniston, a Staff Sergeant at the time of the incident, who was the primary witness who led the investigation in the beginning and had ‘Top-Secret clearance’ – one of only eight people with Top-Secret clearance working Security at the twin bases. His credibility and honesty were highly respected throughout his years in the USAF. Jim Penniston has teamed-up with author Gary Osborn to present the definitive account of the Rendlesham Incident and the aftermath of events, just as he witnessed and experienced them from the incident itself, which began during the early morning hours of Boxing Day, December 26, 1980 up to April 2014. Bio Gary is an author, independent researcher, and expert in ancient symbolism. He has studied the Giza plateau and the possibility that ancient monuments contain hidden layers of meaning. He explores the correspondence between binary code coordinates associated with Staff Sergeant Jim Penniston’s 1980 Rendlesham Forest encounter and notable points on the Giza Plateau. In this episode, I talk about one of the United Kingdom’s most intriguing UFO mysteries: the Broad Haven UFO incident. In February 1977, the quiet seaside village of Broad Haven became the center of national attention after a group of schoolchildren reported seeing a strange craft near their playground. What began as an unusual lunchtime story quickly turned into one of Britain’s most famous UFO cases, drawing investigators, journalists, and researchers to this small Welsh community. The sighting occurred at Broad Haven Primary School, where fourteen children claimed they saw a silver, dome-shaped UFO hovering near a nearby field. When their headmaster questioned them individually, the children were asked to draw what they had witnessed. Surprisingly, many of the drawings shared similar features, depicting a structured craft with a rounded top and wide base. The consistency between the sketches helped turn what might have been dismissed as playground imagination into a story that captured wider curiosity. As news of the sighting spread, other residents in the area began reporting UFO experiences of their own. Some described bright lights moving silently across the sky, while others claimed to have seen strange objects hovering low over fields or drifting along the Pembrokeshire coastline. These reports seemed to cluster around the same period, leading some researchers to refer to the region as part of the so-called Welsh Triangle, an area where multiple unexplained sightings were reported during the late 1970s. In this episode I'm talking to Peter Khory about his alien encounters. Peter Khoury is an Australian experiencer whose accounts have become associated with one of the most widely discussed and scientifically examined UFO abduction cases on record. His experiences began during his childhood in Lebanon. During that early incident, he and other children were on a rooftop in broad daylight when he observed an egg-shaped craft hovering silently above them. Peter found the children suddenly frozen, as though, for them, time had momentarily stopped. Khoury stated that two beings inside the craft appeared to be observing him during the event. In 1988, Khoury had another significant encounter in which he again came into contact with the same entities. During this experience he also described the presence of short hooded figures similar to those described by Whitley Strieber in his book Communion. Khoury has stated that the events of that night had a profound impact on his life and would later link his personal experiences to one of the most controversial and unsettling cases in UFO research. A pivotal event in Peter Khoury’s experiences occurred in 1992, when an encounter resulted in a strand of unusual blonde hair being left behind. This physical sample later became the focus of detailed scientific examination, including DNA analysis conducted by Dr. Horace Drew. The testing of the hair drew significant attention and played a major role in bringing wider awareness to Khoury’s experiences. As researchers and investigators examined the case, it became closely associated with the work of UFO researcher Bill Chalker, particularly through his book 'Hair of the Alien', which documented the circumstances surrounding the encounter and the subsequent analysis. My head felt as if it had been split open. I know that I cried out, but it was in vain. Then, that entire horrible feeling was instantly gone! This time, I found myself immediately sitting up on my bed with the sheet around me but dropped to my waist. A small Zeta Grey was right next to me in the room. My head felt as if it had been split open. I know that I cried out, but it was in vain. Then, that entire horrible feeling was instantly gone! Is there life in space? Mainstream science is converging on a positive answer. So why are people still talking about the so-called Fermi paradox?We examine the evidence for some important questions: Is there water beyond our little blue ball? Is there life in space? On the morning of April 6th, 1966, in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton South, hundreds of schoolchildren were enjoying their morning recess when the ordinary became extraordinary. Over the playing fields of Westall High School, a strange silver disc appeared in the sky, silent, gleaming, and moving in ways no aircraft should.
