APG 164 – Love Is In The Air
The GAO released a report earlier this month discussing the U.S. ATC system, and the need for the FAA to more comprehensively address cybersecurity as it transitions to “NextGen.” Several “experts” have jumped into the fray, including a guy who tweeted about his hacking prowess, resulting in his removal from a United flight in Syracuse. Is this another case of bad reporting? Or, is there really a serious cybersecurity threat? In the wake of the Germanwings tragedy, the chief of Airbus’s jetliner division warned against reducing the pilots’ role in aviation safety. A Piper 601 Aerostar had an interesting “touch-and-go” at the Aero Acres Airport in Fort Pierce, Florida. You have to watch this video. Wow. One of the pilots of the Serbian Presidential private jet, a Dassault Falcon 50, accidentally activated the Emergency Slat Extension switch while trying to sop up spilled coffee, causing an uncontrolled dive of about 5,000 feet. Apparently, he will now have some time off to think about his error, and catch up on past episodes of the Airline Pilot Guy show! APG 165 – Augmented Crew
For the first time ever on APG, an “augmented crew!” I was joined by fellow pilots Miami Rick and Dr. Steph. Several iPad Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) at American had a problem with a crashing app. Was anyone in danger? Well, if you’re the clueless media, YES! Not the media? Well then, no. For an inexplicable reason, a Turkish A320 dipped its wing right before touchdown, resulting in the right engine, pylon, and wingtip contacting the runway. After a successful go-around, the jet returned for an eventful landing. Check it out. APG 166 – Falling From The Sky? Don't Think So.
Dr. Steph joins me on this flight! The Dreamliner works great, 24/7/248. Don’t worry, I doubt you’ll see them falling from the sky. Who knew? A 10-member panel from the National Research Council reveals the FAA was not delivering the system that had been promised and should “reset expectations” about what it is delivering to the public and the airlines that use the system. A couple of quick-thinking Aer Lingus pilots saved their plane and their 46 passengers last year when a thick layer of sea salt formed on the windscreen, obstructing their view of the runway for landing. Listen to the show to hear how they successfully landed. Stay tuned for how you can order the Acme Airlines coffee mugs and pint glasses. The logo etching on the pint glass is lighter than in the picture, and the blue logo on the mug is not quite as bright as pictured. APG 140 – Meet-ups, Flight Control Problems, Emergencies
Would you hesitate to declare an emergency? We discuss an article about pilot reluctance to declare an emergency when it is the appropriate thing to do. A sick passenger on a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Chicago was told by flight attendants worried about Ebola that she would have to stay in the lavatory for the duration of the flight, according to a passenger witness. Is this a case of hysteria and overreaction, or prudent action? Here’s an interesting one: A Skywest CRJ2 experienced flight control problems while on approach to Chicago’s O’Haire International last week. They safely landed the jet at DuPage Airport southwest of KORD. APG 139 – Ebola and the Airlines: Are Crews Safe?
Is the Ebola virus outbreak under control? How will the airlines deal with this? A second healthcare worker has been diagnosed with the deadly virus, and she travelled on a Frontier flight over the weekend. Passengers and crew are being monitored. The largest American flight attendants union says it wants airline passengers to return to stowing phones and other electronics during takeoffs and landings, but the group’s arguments didn’t seem to fly Friday in court. I’m afraid this is too late. Water under the bridge. Until we have an airplane crash directly connected to electronic device use, this won’t happen. The reincarnation of PEOPLExpress announced that their cessation of service will continue indefinitely, at least until they can get FAA approval to continue operations as a Part 380 carrier. Just before hitting "record" for this episode, breaking news reports the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip region, including the rocket strike landing near Tel Aviv International airport, which caused the divert of a Delta flight from New York to Tel Aviv. The flight landed safely in Paris. Several US airlines canceled flights into TLV, prompting the FAA to issue a NOTAM, temporarily prohibiting all US flights into The airport. Finger-pointing continues in the tragic shoot down of Malaysia MH17 over Eastern Croatia.
