PLASTIC-EATING SUPERWORMS COULD STOP EARTH’S PLASTIC POLLUTION PROBLEMS
From Styrofoam packages to saran wrap to toys and dental wear, much of our daily lives involve plastics. The plastic itself is extremely cheap to produce, which is why it seems ubiquitous; but because it does not break down easily, it has become a major pollutant in waterways, oceans, and soils. In short, the Earth has a plastic problem. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

How much space would we need to store the world’s plastic in landfills?
When we’re done with our plastic, we have three options: recycle it, incinerate (burn) it, or send it to landfill. We think about recycling as the holy grail of environmental action, but it’s not. Most items can only be recycled once or twice (if they’re sent there at all), so they end up in landfill eventually. Recycling delays, but does not eliminate, plastic going to landfill. Experts have discovered how zebra stripes work
Researchers at the University of Bristol have found why zebra fur is thinly striped and sharply outlined. Their findings, published today in the Journal of Experimental Biology, reveal that stark black-white distinctions and small dark patches are particularly effective in thwarting horsefly attack. These characteristics specifically eliminate the outline of large monochrome dark patches that are attractive to horseflies at close distances. Hosted on Acast.
