In a nutshell, the favourable rains that the Western Cape received in the past couple of weeks, and good soil moisture in other provinces has been of immense benefit to the South African winter crops. We can now safely say – with caution, of course, as the season is still at early stages – that South Africa will not only have one of the good summer crops seasons but a brilliant agriculture season. I have discussed elsewhere the good outputs coming out of the horticulture sub-sector, and also recovery in the livestock industry, which completes the statement I have made about 2020 having been a season of abundance in South Africa’s agriculture. As SA’s summer crop — which includes maize — is set to be one of the best on record, focus now shifts to the outlook for winter crops, specifically wheat. To zoom into the details, the downward revision of US maize production resulted in a 2% decline in the 2020/21 global maize production from June estimates to 1.16 billion tonnes.
