How Can EVM Transform Risk Management in Agile Project Delivery?
In this @agileuprising panel episode, Prateek Singh @singhpr, Andy Cleff @justsitthere, Ben Rodilitz BenRodilitz, and Colleen Johnson @scrumhive chat about applying #agile thinking to earned value management. #EVM, a project management technique used in measuring performance, progress, and risk, relies on calculations based on detailed and accurate upfront planning. The coexistence of Agile (which is dynamic by design) and EVM requires a tailored approach. Recapping Agile 2023 with Sarah, Claudia, and Murman
EAgile 2023 was held recently in two locations for the first time ever. The main event was located in Orlando, Florida while a smaller but just as valuable hub was in Edinburgh, Scotland. Board member Chris Murman got together attendees from both locations to discuss their experiences. Sarah Baca spoke and attended in Orlando, while Claudia Orozco-Gomez attended her very first agile conference ever in Edinburgh. The trio discussed how the logistics worked between the two locations, how the event felt, and what stood out most from the week: Many don't understand what it takes to put on the event, and what it means to the Agile Alliance every year. Murman shared some of the logistics of the event having spent a year planning it. The family feel of both locations created a great environment for connection. Finding the right session is sometimes more difficult than it seems. Managing your energy over the week can also be a challenge for the introvert in us. Finally, there's so much more that people still don't realize happens at the main location every year. Regardless of the social media discussion around location, the Agile Alliance does everything it can to create a welcoming space for like-minded people to further their agile journies together. Hopefully you can catch up on some of the content. Videos for each of the keynotes are already available online. Applying Research To SAFe Arguments With Chistiaan Verwijs
Discord members Niklas Kari, Mike Caddell, and Janel Lanza welcome fellow agilist Christiaan Verwijs to discuss his recent article on a data-driven approach to discussing SAFe. It's everyone's favorite framework to bash and blame for the issues in our work, and often the arguments are based on anecdotal evidence. So, when someone decided to do some extensive research on the topic, it got our attention and we wanted to hear more. Verwijs outlined the research method, how the questions were adapted over time to respond to research participants, and how it's been received so far in the community. Team autonomy is a big part of the data set, as is the reception and reaction of the C-suite. We're not really sure if the data proves one way or another that SAFe is truly bad. Ultimately, it will likely confirm whatever opinion you have. However, it is vitally important to base impressions on various frameworks on more than emotional evidence. This was an interesting discussion of how. How Comfortable Are You Discussing Loneliness?
In a blog post last year, AU board member Chris Murman wrote about loneliness and his experience with the topic in his professional journey. Because they are gluttons for punishment and love discussing their own misery, Jay Hrcsko, and Andrew Leff joined Murman to start the new year off with an emotional blood-letting. Along the way, the three discuss: How comfortable we all are with the topic. The difference between loneliness and being alone. Is it possible to tell if someone is lonely? What do we say when we see it in ourselves and others? Some ways to turn loneliness into an opportunity to connect with others. It was a fantastic chat because the more we destigmatize the topic (like others in the past 20 years), the easier it is to bring up loneliness to others in our lives. As we begin 2023 anew, please share this episode with others because you never know who it could have a positive impact on. This is Murman speaking here, and I'm so thankful to have these two gentlemen in my life to walk through the challenging stuff. Come Fail Away With Me and Paul Tevis
Not long ago, Chris Murman and Jay Hrcsko recorded a podcast about some of the mistakes or failures Murman has made in his agile journey. Perhaps it wasn't an outright fail, but definitely coaching he wished he could have a do-over. It is part of a larger conversation we have been having at AU for quite some time. We even wish we could host a conference devoted solely to failure bows. It definitely become a fiery topic since the pandemic to realize the ways of working most held dear weren't always the case anymore. And yet we hold them as always true. So Murm put the call out on Twitter for someone else to join me in the conversation. Treasured peer and friend Paul Tevis answered the Bat Signal, and we thank him for his bravery. Join Murman and Tevis as they discuss why it's so tough to discuss failure in an industry that claims to embrace it. What were some moments we wish we could do over again, and why it's important to find those moments? Recognizing the opportunity to use regret is the key to taking huge leaps forward together.
