Annette Birkmann dreamt about riding a motorcycle since she was a little girl, but it wasn’t until she was 30 years old that she got her motorcycle license. In 2006, she realized that she had reached the goals she had set for herself, but still felt unfulfilled, so she quit her job as an associate in a law firm in Denmark to go an an adventure. As she rode through the Americas, she realized that while she left with the assumption that the trip would be her great achievement, she actually came away with much more, “a discovery of my inner strength and a new way of responding to challenges, adversity and conflicts”. Voni & Paul Glaves - Million Miles on Her Motorcycle & the Mechanic Behind the Scenes Voni Glaves is one of two women who have ridden over a million miles on a BMW motorcycle. Back in the 1970's, Voni had no idea that women could ride motorcycles, but with encouragement from her husband Paul, she learned to ride just so they could take their kids on motorcycle camping trips. Veterans Back 40 Adventure Morgan Northrup & Chet Mainwaring Morgan Northrup was in the army and has served two tours, one as active duty and one as a civilian contractor in the Middle East. He’s also spent several years as a police officer in Tennessee. When he was suffering from depression and anxiety, as a result of his army and police careers, his dad stepped in and bought him a plane ticket to Colorado. There he attended a dual sport motorcycle retreat for veterans dealing with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The experience left him feeling that he now had a new purpose in life, to help other veterans going through the same sort of trauma. Morgan’s trip with the retreat changed his life and he is launching a non profit outdoor adventure organization called Veterans Back 40 Adventure. Starting this year, Morgan’s organization will be taking veterans out on adventure bikes throughout the Northwest back country. This is the time of year many of us are looking to make New Year’s resolutions. It’s a tradition in many countries, to set goals for self improvement or personal gain. But, usually these resolutions come with a price - pain. Like having to cut out food you love to lose weight, or the effort of working out to become fitter or maybe cutting out your favourite coffee shop to save more money. All good goals, all with some pain attached to them. Is it any wonder that we forget our new years resolutions as we fall back into everyday life in January?Instead of setting goals that you see as sacrifice or painful, how about setting a win/win goal? A goal that is achievable, yet fun too. How about a resolution to do at least one trip, one adventure, one outing that stretches your personal comfort zone, yet rewards you with experience. The melding of personal growth with motorcycle adventure. But, how to go about it to ensure success? We decided to find out more about setting New Year’s resolutions. We found that in a study at the University of Bristol, Professor Richard Wiseman showed that only 12% of people achieve their goals. Of course, most goals include weight loss, cutting back on alcohol consumption or quitting smoking. The usual. Daunting tasks that are hard to follow through. His study showed that men were more likely to succeed if they set definitive goals, instead of general goals such as lose a pound a week instead of just lose weight, or if they focused on the rewards, such as having the opposite sex find them more attractive. Women found it easier to achieve their goals when they shared their resolutions with friends and family. Encouragement not to give up just because they had given in and had some taboo chocolate, goes a long way to being seen as a setback rather than as having failed.The New Years resolution study resulted in some tips for being successful with your resolutions: avoid previous resolutions, think and plan what your resolution could be, be specific about it and then make only one resolution.So, this year why not make a fun New Year’s resolution? Make a goal to take that trip you’ve always wanted to do. And do whatever it takes to make sure that you realize that goal. In a time when social media and youtube is so prevalent, Ken and Carol Duval are not the norm when it comes to travelling around the world and reporting on their trip. They haven't written a book, they don't submit magazine articles, and they don't have a website. They have a blog on Horizons Unlimited which Ken says they haven't been able to update for a while and they do post on their Facebook page. Catherine Germillac has been riding the same motorcycle for going on 30 years, a small 2-stroke Yamaha DTMX 125. As a young woman, setting out on a solo motorcycle wasn't a common thing to do in the late 1980's. But being inspired by Ted Simon's Jupiter's Travels, she fell in love with the idea of motorcycling, travel and adventure, purchased her beloved motorcycle, that she calls Desiree, took some lessons and then started riding. When an Afternoon Ride Turns in to a Rescue Mission This is the story of a rescue made possible by a satellite communicator, an inReach device. We've used the inReach for some time now, but only have experience with it as a convenient method of staying in contact with family and for checking weather in remote locations. When we were putting together this episode, part of the plan was to talk to someone who had to use their inReach for the purpose of rescue. And while searching for someone with a story, we experienced a rescue mission of our own. Jim Martin, show host, and his friend Brent Henry, went for an afternoon adventure ride, on the logging roads and trails on our island. That ride turned out to involve a serious injury and the subsequent rescue mission. Lance Gines has been riding motorcycles for about 44 years. Growing up on a farm in Idaho in the United States, he got his first dirt bike when he was 6 years old. Lance taught himself to ride in the horse area where his dad would train horses. Their farm was on the edge of BLM land (public) and two miles from the Snake River Canyon. He gained experience riding in the desert and in the canyon, which led him to buy his first street bike at the age of 14. And that's when Lance went on his first road trip with his father to Montana, Washington and Oregon. Having a passion for riding since a young age, Lance has raised his kids with motorcycles. He's lucky to have a wife who is as obsessed as he is with riding and he still goes on motorcycle adventures with his dad regularly. Dylan Wickrama Between 2010 and 2013, Dylan Wickrama was on a world trip on his motorcycle. He left with no plans and he had a tight budget. On his trip he covered 210,000 km and road through 80 countries, starting in Switzerland and ending in Argentina. His RTW trip wasn’t about speed, distance or setting records, but it was about exploring the world, meeting people and discovering places. After 3 years on the road, he reached the Darien Gap in Panama. Considering his options, Dylan came up with a plan to get around the Darien Gap to continue his trip. The Darien Gap is also know as the DARIEN ISTHMUS, an isthmus being a narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas with water on either side. You will find the Darien Gap on the Pan American Highway, nown as the “longest motorable road in the world” in the Guiness Book of Records, a popular route for many motorcyclists. The Pan American Highway can be as long as 48,000 km depending what route you choose to take through Canada and the US, with the most popular routes averaging about 30,000 km. Adventurers often start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and end in Ushuaia, Argentina, or the reverse. There is no official route in Canada or the United States, but all Interstate Highways in the US have been declared as part of the Pan American Highway. The official Pan American Highway spans from Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Between Panama and Colombia, on the border of Central and South America, you come to the Darien Gap, just over 160 km (99 miles) long and about 50 km (31 miles) wide of jungle, mountains, swamps and rivers. The only sensible options are to go over it by plane or around it by ship A Few Basic Facts About Darien Gap: There are no roads, only foot paths or trails, no street signs. Exotic wildlife abounds, the likes of which most of have never known, such as jaguars, wild boars and venomous snakes. It's hot, muggy, the forest is thick and the mosquitos atrocious. Dangers are everywhere, there are risks of encountering drug smugglers, poachers, guerrillas and paramilitaries in the Darien Gap, which is also a refuge for murderous outlaws. The Darien Gap is home to indigenous peoples known as the Embera-Wounaan and the Kuna. Why Not Build a Road? In 1971 and 1992 efforts were made to allow a road to be put through the Darien Gap, but both were stopped due to environmental concerns, of which there are many. There is evidence that the Gap has prevented diseased cattle, which cause foot and mouth disease, from spreading in to Central and North America. The indigenous people are concerned that a road may destroy their cultures. There is the threat of making the Darien Gap more accessible for drug trafficking and the resulting violence. And there is also the need to protect the rainforest. The Darien Gap has been said to be a natural barrier which protects North America. Crossing the Gap For centuries, the Darien Gap has been a destination and challenge for many explorers and adventurers, and the exploration of it has usually been met with disaster. However, there have been many successful attempts at crossing through the Darien Gap, by two wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles, rocons, motorcycles, bicycles and by foot. There have been several notable “first of it’s kind” crossings. The first successful crossing in a vehicle was in 1960 in a Land Rover and Jeep. An arduous journey moving an average of only 200 metres or about 650 feet in an hour. It took them nearly 5 months to cross the Gap, as they made their way through the jungle clearing the bush by hand, crossing streams and rivers, making bridges as they went. The first crossing in a two wheel drive vehicle was in 1961, by a team using three Chevrolet Corvairs, which took 109 days. They completed the expedition having abandoned one of the cars. Between 1971 and 1973, the first fully overland crossing was by Ian Hibell by bicycle. In 1975, Robert L. Webb made the first motorcycle crossing. Between 1985 and 1987, the first vehicle crossing by land only was made in a Jeep by Loren Upton and Patty Mercier in 741 days, they would return in 1995 to cross the Darien Gap again, this time on Rocons. Since then there have been more notable crossings made by motorcycle, on foot or by river boats. To this day, any inland routes remain extremely dangerous. Only a Rider Knows Why a Dog Sticks His Head Out of a Car Window Who doesn’t love their furry friend going everywhere with them? You take them in your vehicle, on hikes, for walks, they sleep in your bed (don’t deny it), and for many, they are simply one of your best friends, even like family. But, what if you aren’t taking the four wheeled transport, what if you are riding your bike to the store or on a trip? If you love your bike and you love your dog, there are options for bringing them both along for the ride. There are dog carriers, goggles and helmets available to keep your dog safer on a bike. Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper. Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost. So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills. For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. Lyndon Poskitt is a passionate motorcyclist who has spent many years racing motorcycles, with the apogee being the Dakar Rally in 2013. Not for all people, but quite often for many of us, when we leave on a trip, be it a few weeks, months or a year or more, we face emotional and financial hurdles. First we spend time planning, and we reach a point where we have crossed all our t’s and dotted all our i’s. We know exactly how things are going to go, where we will be and how much money we need, or so we think. Once on the road, some of us may feel homesick, or lost. We get lonely, financially strapped, worried or unsure about how this trip will pan out. These hurdles, if you persevere, are usually overcome as you fall in to a rhythm. And soon the road becomes your home, you meet new people and experience new cultures. You can find work on the road in different locations, or be self employed, writing articles, blogging or making films. Once you find your niche, your comfort zone is expanded and you begin to thrive. As you know from the many extended travel riders we have interviewed in the past, there are those who find they have a need to return home at the end of a trip and some who don’t want to go back to a traditional life at all. Scooter Tramp Scotty and Michelle Hope are great examples of true living on the road. Finding work wherever they go, connecting with old friends and making new ones. And then are those who leave for a year and don’t come back home for 14 years. Ian Coates had wanderlust, travelling at a very slow pace. He just couldn’t bring himself to return home until he was good and ready. And some go for a while, then return home for a time, and hit the road again as soon as they can. They may have work or other obligations, health concerns or they just may feel the need to spend time with family before tasting freedom again. Ara Geureghian and Spirit spend most of their time on the road, returning home for different reasons, always with the intention of getting on the road again as soon as possible. Daniel Rintz and his partner Josie, have just completed their riding adventure from Alaska to Argentina. When the trip was coming to an end, they realized they just couldn’t stop riding and go back to a regular lifestyle. They prefer to face Africa underfunded, figuring out the financial bits as they go rather than go back to normal life. For some, this is hard to fathom, for others, well, we either dream about it or do it. We’ve had many opportunities to explore old cemeteries and something always seems to grab us when we do. When we look at the names and dates, the condition of the graves, we realize that one day it is inevitable, we will be forgotten. Our families and friends will remember us while they are still living, but as the years go by, pretty soon we are just a name on a gravestone with a birth and death date. If we won’t be remembered forever, then isn’t only right that we should live life to the fullest, throw caution to the wind and make memories for ourselves? In October 2014, Liz and her partner Con Feyen set out travel from Australia to London with a 12 month window planned for their trip. They had sold, stored or donated all their belongings, except for what they needed for the trip, and while it may seem scary to some people, they were excited about the freedom of being homeless and jobless and without “stuff”. Liz felt no trepidations about not being a very experienced motorcycle rider, and happily set out for London. Well, after 16 months of riding, they arrived in Iran. Seems their schedule had gone on the wayside and London was not to be attained on this trip. And while at times the trip may have been harder than what Liz thought it would be, she feels she is better off for having done it. She says that “it is never too late to start something new, learn something new and to put yourself in vulnerable situations”. After living in Australia for 12 years, Will & Kate were feeling homesick for the UK and decided it was time to go home. They could have just booked a flight and within the day been back home. But when opportunity knocks, why not open the door?Many people find it hard in their busy lives to take the time to go on an adventure. It seems to be a common thread where we all long for it, but don't seem able to pull it together. Will and Kate had already done some travelling, but not on their motorcycles, especially as Kate was a new rider and hadn't done any long rides as yet. In 1933 Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker drove from New York City to Los Angeles in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 in 53.5 hours. No one broke that record for 40 years.Car and Driver writer Brock Yates and editor Steve Smith organized the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which took place 5 times between 1971 and 1979. It was an illegal road race from coast to coast to celebrate the United States Interstate Highway System and to protest strict traffic laws which were coming in to effect at that time. The first run was not a competitive race, as there was only one team running in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. But by the time they were running the last race it was known as a wild race. They ran everything from Ferraris to pick-up trucks. It was mostly a secret event, with few witnesses.As more and more people have tried to rush to break Cannonball Baker’s time, the route has become established and is commonly referred to as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run.Carl Reese is a contractor from California, and in his spare time he’s an endurance rider that has set seven world records in less than a year. One being the solo motorcycle “Cannonball” from Los Angeles to New York. Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl broke the record completing the run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. Proof Positive - Motorcycle Riding Good for the Soul Anyone who rides a motorcycle can probably tell you that riding a motorcycle isn’t just a form of transportation, it’s an experience. When you return from a motorcycle ride, you are energized and happy. Many motorcyclists refer to riding as their therapy. Feel bad? Need to sort out a problem? Ride. It works. Motorcycle riding releases endorphins which improve moods. Simple as that. Studies show that riding motorcycles, both on and off-road, have both physical and mental health benefits. In 2010, Tohoku University in Japan jointly with Yamaha conducted research in to the relationship between brain stimulation and riding motorcycles. Researchers measured brain activity to confirm whether riding a motorcycle activates the PFC, the prefrontal cortex. The PFC has been linked to a persons planning behaviours, personality development, decision making and social behaviour. Then they examined the effect of using a motorcycle daily. They found that the bilateral PFC was activated when riding a motorcycle and that daily riding is beneficial for improving various cognitive functions and for reducing mental stress. A study on the “Quality of Life of Recreational Off-Road Riders” in 2010 as published in the Health & Fitness Journal of Canada, concluded that “habitual off-road riders appear to have relatively high physical and mental functioning, possibly as a result of their participation in recreational off-road riding. Both ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) and ORM (Off Road Motorcycle) riders revealed high QOL (Quality of Life) based on their MSC (Mental Component Scale) scores.” and “Overall, off-road riders had higher levels of physical functioning than Canadian population norms”.
