S1 Ep 28Advocating for your neurodiversity in the workplace

E

"Embracing and working with our strengths teaches us to thrive with ADHD."Speaking about an autism or ADHD diagnosis within the workplace can feel daunting, exposing and scary. However, when we advocate for ourselves within our work setting, we are enabling the support, care and accommodations we deserve. Working with - and no longer - against our brains means we can excel more in our careers without the burnout and exhaustion that typically comes with neurodiversity. Often the way we work can look different to others, but that doesn't mean it's less effective. The more we talk about this and allow different options to be implemented, the healthier, happier and more productive we feel within our work environment. This week’s guest, Samantha Hiew is the Director of ADHD Girls, a company founded with a social mission to empower girls and women with ADHD through effective advocacy, education and specialists’ insights. With a background in healthcare communications and a PhD in Cancer Research, Samantha is passionate about helping individuals with ADHD access employment and training organisations to provide the support they need to thrive in their circumstances, thereby increasing happiness and wellbeing and improving productivity.During this episode of The ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast, Kate and Samantha spoke about: Feeling alone after an ADHD diagnosis The power of anecdotal experiencesThe benefits of being around others like you and community  Sam's autism diagnosis and her surpriseADHD and Autism often going hand in handNeeding to have a passion, fulfilment to stave off depressionSam's mission with ADHD diagnosisRecognition Responsive Euphoria and what it is and looks like Navigating ADHD and Neurodiveristy in the workplaceHow employers can boost their ADHD employee's confidence Advocating for yourself in the workplaceEmbracing our strengths and interests to thrive with ADHDYou can connect with Samantha via adhdgirls.co.uk or on social media via Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, @adhd_girlsThanks to our sponsor, Brain. "Find something you're passionate about...and you're going to do it really well."This week’s episode is with Audrey Stimpson, an internationally published master photographer by trade who has now made it her sole mission to share her story of Adderall addiction and how she freed herself after 23 years. Memphis-based Audrey, trained as a fashion photographer, working in the elite fashion and modelling industry of NYC for 8 years. She had the privilege of shooting for top brands and major publications like Vogue, Elle, Forbes, and Robb Report to name a few. She has a growing platform of over 23k followers, the majority based in NYC and the MidSouth. Audrey had been prescribed Adderall to treat her ADHD since the age of seven, the same year the drug first entered the market, making her one of the longest case studies. For a while, Adderall made her feel invincible. From the photoshoot straight to the after-party, Audrey was using Adderall to slay! But, after 23 years of use, the amphetamine had taken its toll, leading to psychosis, gut health issues, body dysmorphia, Addorexia, and a never-ending cycle of shame. Now trained as a functional medicine coach, she helps others on their Adderall-free journey and writing the guidebook that she wished she’d had. She is developing an ADHD nutrition coaching program, and she recently launched a blog dedicated to helping those directly affected by Adderall addiction. She is also addressing real fears in real-time on TikTok, the preferred social media for those with ADHD,  reaching upwards of 80,000 people per post. Kate and Audrey talked about: Being medication-free after 23 years of being on ADHD medsHow she came off the meds and being scared of operating without themHer training as a Functional Nutrition Coach to help with ADHDUsing EMDR therapy for addiction Overcoming her dependency on medicationGut healing and autoimmune issues alongside ADHDThe power of our diet and lifestyle to help with ADHDHer book, How-To-Thrive-Off-Adderall guidebook, Accidental ADDict.Connect with Audrey via Instagram or on her website Audreystimpson.com, where you can also sign up for her FREE video guide on how to become Adderall free using EMDR Therapy. This is not medical advice.
